Love this
I have a session tonight. Going to try that pencil trick 😀
This helps a ton!!
I see you often show the Brauner Phantera when you talk about recording vocals. Would you say its a good allrounder for upfront vocals?
Greetings from Sweden
Thanks brother. Salutera from 🇲🇾 MY
One of my favorite engineers would say "Guys, that was perfect, let's do it again" It usually made us laugh and loosened us up and got us out of our head a bit. Great video!
Bro, the hack about positivity is so true. I'm still paying the price 25 years later (1995) for making a negative comment to my wife during a vocal tracking session. She mentioned it to a producer friend of ours last week, uuuugh!
@@aaronpayne3342 Nor do they forgive 😂
and dont tell her there's too much mayo on the sammitch either
You guys are done with your misogynistic rant? Go make your sandwich on your own. Thanks.
@@gerritm.e.2144 no rant, just truth....
I don’t think the start of the discussion was inherently misogynistic, but Joe’s comment was a bit misplaced
I’ve used that trick of lowering the vox feedback in the artist’s mix, so they sing louder but it usually ends up in “hey can you turn my voice up a little bit?”
heyho Colt, the “pencil trick” ...wow. never heard before! and i am recording vocals for over 25 years . cheers from berlin
I don’t think you’re singing flat, but I’d like you to try to hit the notes sharp on every note for this take 😂
lollll
🤔
Hahahah
That’s the spirit! Lol. I’ve heard using open back or semi open back headphones with singers can help with this, if they’re good singers and the resonance in their head is thrown off by the closed back nature of the phones. Worth a shot!
@@samchoate1719 That's a pretty interesting trick, gotta try that. But I think it may hurt the mix more due to the entire mix bleeding from the headphones into the mic. I don't even record in closed headphones, I usually use in-ear headphones, it's the only way I don't get any bleed.
Yes to the "TO DO" vs "NOT TO DO". I'm a huge advocate for "positive command coaching"! (Gymnastics coach/audio engineer)
Truly there is so much psychology when recording artist such litttle things make sessions go so much better glad that was mentioned.
An other old trick for singer managing: for some of them who have this tendency to go further away from the mike is to put an other mike behind their head, telling them it's for enhancing the recording, it's done like that in abbey road studios, etc etc... Well, be creativ and cheat.
And the singer, trying to avoid to bump the rear mike with his/her head will stay in the correct distances.
The tip about never saying anything negative to an artist ever is absolute solid gold in the real world. You’ve got to learn how to be tactful with your criticism or you can easily jeopardize the performance
The last one about rotating the singer's head on high notes is straight out golden!
Subed :)
That pencil trick is brilliant! Never in a million years would I have thought of that, and even on my VO rig, it seems to help. Thanks!
:Using 2 different microphones for background vocals and lead vocals.
Me: doesn't even have a good microphone.
Get a used SM58 my guy!
MXL 990 and Behringer xm8500 are a great pair of budget options
"manage their head space..." beautifully put.
I will start using the SM7B for backing vocals.
Wow, I honestly came to this thinking I wasn't going to be able to take much from it, but pretty much everything you said had something I can take from it. Subbed.
Seriously, thank you Colt for taking the time to dig into this production segment. Getting vocals right is sooo super important. I really like your approach to the work you've done for your clients! Keep it up.
2:17 is my sleep paralysis demon
Wow!
this is good stuff that we dont learn as much anymore because we're by ourselves, the kinda stuff you just pick up from actually being in studios with people more experienced than you. good video, thanks.
Love your tips, man. Thanks as always for the amazing content🙏🏽
The last tip is amazing! Have always struggled with high notes and distance problem. Thanks for the hack!
These are fire yo keep it up these are useful and easy to understand
I really enjoyed singing from Ez Voice because I love singing with headset with microphone.
The pencil trick is nice. Pair that with off axis and that's a good combo! The whole vocal pulling back drives me nuts! Keeping them at same distance and slight turn of head is super helpful. I learned that one a few years ago and it really helps keep that vocal full and not have to compress as much to regulate volume.
Some of the best videos seen about tips for vocal recording, most powerful hacks mentioned!
Absolutely love your videos. They are incredibly helpful. I’ve been slowly but surely becoming better at making music I like to listen to and I would attribute a good portion of it to the knowledge I’ve accumulated from your channel.
Awesome love your tips as a beginner on the booth 🎙 this will help me and my vocal producer 🔥
You go to so much effort each video. Even the hand behind the pencil so it stayed in focus-you’ve thought of everything! Thank you for the hard work 🙏
Thank you Colt. Excellent advice for this recording newbie.
so loved the positive reinforcement angle working w singers. I need to improve my game in that!!!
Thank you very much, This was very helpful. thanks Colt
Great stuff as always, I liked the bit about how to talk with singers. It sure is important to make them feel confortable and I guess, not dwell too much on the edits and processing the track will have to go throught.
Excellent ideas. Thanks for these great ideas. Awesome !
These were really great tips! Especially like the idea of turning your head sidewise instead of distancing from the mic
Excellent video. Thanks for it.
Awesome video as always! This helps a lot

Thank you for this Homie!
Haven’t finished the whole vid. Just wanted to say I leave a pencil on my pop filter instead. Good tip though. Very under rated ppl may not know unless they been recording for a while
Quick question, how do you keep it on the pop filter? My pop filter drops down if I mess with it too much.
Clever stuff! ...the voice of experience.
great video man!

moving to the side for higher, louder notes is a game changer thank you!!
Great tips sir!
these tips are great
Congrats on 40k man!
Thank you!
Great tips! About the rotating mic for the S sounds, i prefer to align the capsule to the nose and angle it down to the mouth
Great advice!
Here’s a tip that relates to monitor volume. If a singer keeps singing sharp, turn down the volume. If they are singing flat, turn up the volume. This will make them sing with more or less power which can sometimes affect their pitch. I also have a great way to get them to get out of a rut if they keep messing up their take, you have to come on my podcast though haha. Great work man. Love the channel.
Nice one Colt!
Great tips. Thanks.
