      I use turning off-axis from the mic every single day. It's invaluable to use that technique.

      Maybe less 'recording' and more 'post production' but: double your snare track, high pass filter, distortion, compression. Your snare instantly has lo fi punk crack to it.
      But I'm DEFINITELY using that foam weather sealing trick. Or sticky hands from the dollar store

      I like to mic up electric guitars (like i would an acoustic) when laying down DI's. they're really nice to have later one when mixing. On clean parts they'll give some nice acoustic and string sound, and on high gain parts they can be used subtly in the background to increase transients and help define the guitar riffs. It's especially handy when you have a guitarist that refuses to turn the gain down.

    When changing drum heads I take the old heads and cut a round hole in the center leaving about 2 or 3 inches and lay the ring that's left over the new drum heads. It's basically a free version of the remo or evans drum rings.

    Ha! Ha! HA!!!! I love the last one!! Been saying that to other musicians at live gigs for YEARS. Stop pulling way back from an SM58!! Eat that thing!! SM58 thrives when you get up on it!! Glad you brought this up, I hope 10,000,000 people see it!

    • @DaveJLamar
      @DaveJLamar 4 роки тому +1

      and SM58 yes. but some mics it will actually mess with the tone. I find it best to try and get them to sing straight into the mic and just try and adjust the gain or ride the volume fader when they hit those high notes so their not so conscious. :)

    • @TheOnlineBusker
      @TheOnlineBusker 4 роки тому

      Dave Lamar Does anyone use something other than SM58 when gigging live? I never have..., I guess there are lots of options these days but it’s still the industry standard.

    Pop screen = pantyhose. YEARS ago, I mean like 15-20 years ago I bought 5 or 6 boxes of pantyhose. I took some wire hangars and made pop screens out of them. They work EPIC. Dead cheap too. You can fashion one up in a minute! I still have a few boxes left, after making a dozen or so pop screens.

    Good tip on the vocals and turning to the side. I've ran into that many times, where I can't see the singer do it, then I figure out why it sounds thinner after listening a few times at certain key parts!
    Will definitely be keeping that in mind more often. Thanks Colt.

  • @MrGCooke
    @MrGCooke 4 роки тому +32

    The last one, singers moving the mic away, comes from doing live performances on systems with without limiters/compressors. Back in the 80s we vocalists learned to do this "mic technique" so we didn't deafen the audience or get distortion. In recording tell your vocalists you have set levels for their loudest passages, and tell them to hold still so they sound their best. If you have a singer who just can't help him/her-self (sometimes it's part of the "show" to make it look like we're working harder for the audience... it's part of the dramatics), then I think this tip #5 is a great solution. But seriously, singers, we're well into the 21st century - if you have 21st century tech and technicians, relearn your mic technique! 😉
    (Sorry, way more wordy than intended!)

    Great video colt! A trick I use often when tracking drummers is to have them use in-ear type headphones and earmuffs over the top, so that they can hear everything well (rest of the band/click etc) but don't have to have their headphones cranked too loud, this gives little to no click spill in the track and also saves their ears a bit! (Not that drummers are interested in saving their ears 🤭)

    Great tips! Additional use for the scarf tip - If you need to reach into the sound hole of an acoustic guitar for any reason (eg to change a preamp battery), tie a scarf or sock tightly over the nut when you slacken the strings, that way they don't ping off the tuning pegs and you can tune right back up when you're done!

    Great Hacks! A lot of singers learn from Musical singers, Jazz singers and or classical singers. In those Genres it‘s not Common to compress the vocals. That‘s why people spend a lot of time practicing mic technique which essentially means „get away from the mic when singing loudly“.

    In my experience, singers move away from the mic when they are belting out a section as they get conscious of the level in their headphones and in most cases they have gotten into the habit of "self mixing" their vocal level when singing live. So they move away to make sure they're not "too loud". I tell them not to move at all and to forget about that completely. Instead, I'll control/ride the level. Sometimes I'm riding the gain or output on the pre but sometimes I'm just riding the volume in their headphone mix!!!

    • @DaveJLamar
      @DaveJLamar 4 роки тому +1

      YES TO THIS!!! yeah, i personally don't like singers turning away from the mic because i find it messes with the tone even more then i have to go in sometimes and EQ those specific sections just so they match the rest of the line. best is to just get them to sing straight into the mic and help them out like you said.

    I would recommend learning the ol' multi-band compressor/EQ for problems with proximity effect with sidechaining capabilities...that way you target what want and don't want. Also turning the mic at an angle will pick up more room sound and headphone bleed. Microphone respond to "micro" vibrations so just the slightest pull back from it can drastically alter the sound. Don't hold back when singing the dry run and use proper gain staging to handle the peaks.

    Turning slightly away from the mic to minimize plosions (popping 'P's) and sibilant 'S's is something I've tried teaching people for decades. Not for singing, but for radio broadcasting. Very few can actually accomplish it, so require a pop filter (aka spit guard). I've been doing radio and voice over recording over 40 years so it's just something I do without having to think about it. I normally position my microphone slightly to one side or the other (usually to my left) and aim the mic a few inches in front of my mouth rather than directly in front of me aimed directly at my mouth.

    Depends on the singer in the case of stepping out. You usually do that live, that's why people do that. For recording it's different because you can always monitor the audio level. But most singers are used to singing in both places. Normally the sound is the thinest on falsettos or growls. But if it's a belted high note, and a well placed one, it's normal that they step away because that's when we singers use the maximum amount of muscle force to produce the belted sound. However, we're not talking about stepping away, just a little bit back is more than enough if the mic is decent

    Simple hack to keep your monitoring consistent is to ALWAYS mark your monitor pot, and keep checking that you have it set to the same spot. IF you move it while you are soloing or something, just be sure you set it back for critical listening. If you have a monitor dim and mute? You could literally pop the cap off your monitor pot so no one touches it until the mix is done.

    I dig the thing about turning the head on higher notes! I love David Bottrill’s ideas about getting good performances out of musicians...turn off the lights in the middle of a take, change their monitor mix slightly, light some candles...do something to take the performer out of their comfort zone and it will help elicit a more spontaneous feel and vibe.

    One short old trick to manage the singer: Tell him you need to put another mike just behind his head for creative recording, have an other sound, all greats sound engineers in the big studios are doing this way, etc...
    Lie.
    Instal the mike on a stand just behind him and don't plug this mike (or plug in and don't open the channel, as you want)
    And the singer will stay at the right distance of the "real" mike during the take.
