  • You know it as soon as your hear it--- The iconic piano part in Eminem's "Lose Yourself". Now, you can learn to play it from Eminem's very own keyboard player, Erskine Hawkins.
"Lose Yourself" is a song by rapper Eminem from the 2002 movie 8 Mile. It was written by Eminem and Jeff Bass, and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, making it the first hip hop song to receive the award, and also won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Solo Performance. In 2004, it was one of only three hip-hop songs from the 21st century to be included on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
"Lose Yourself" was a commercial success, becoming Eminem's first Billboard Hot 100 number-one single and remaining there for twelve consecutive weeks. It reached atop of the charts in nineteen other countries. It received acclaim from music critics, with many critics praising the song's inspiring, aggressive themes and describing it as Eminem's best work to date. Eminem's rapping ability, the lyrics and the production were also praised. In many retrospective reviews and lists, critics have cited the song among Eminem's finest, as well as one of the greatest hip hop songs of all time.

Anyone can see that Erskine was meant to be a performer with his undeniable skills, infectious personality, and positive spirit ---but his favorite thing in the world is playing gospel piano.
After touring with Eminem and Rihanna, Erskine focused on his love for gospel music and playing in church. He has become a true master of the genre, and we are very excited to bring his amazing knowledge to Pianote offer his courses on Pianote.com.

As a kid, listening to this, the words would always fade away into the background and I would just vibe to the chorus piano parts....

Awesome tutorial. I love when the progression is slow enough and there is enough repeats. Going faster kills the motivation too easily for a beginner player

Are you sure? Keep working at it and I think you’ll find that it’s not too tough at all. 3 chords to learn… D minor, C major, Bb major. You’ve GOT THIS!!!

Thanks so much for this! Quick question - in the first and third bars, in the treble clef, why are they dotted quarter notes and not half-notes like in the bass clef? Or perhaps added rests if they're meant to be dotted quarter notes? Unless I'm reading this wrong... Anyway, no biggie, thanks again!

I’m just confused on how he got b flat out of a d minor scale… is it because he was playing the circle of fourths as well?
