Mobile Home Tires and Axles On Trailers

  • I wanted to sort out some confusion about what I've learned about mobile home tire and axle use on trailers.It is not the axle itself that you cannot run, it is the tires, IF they say for "Mobile Home Use Only" on the side. the axle itself is a standard 3" tube axle with either a welded on brake attachment flange or a bolt on. They run the same bearings as a Decter 5-6k axle. IF you can point me to an actual law that says you cannot run MH style axles I'm all ears. I've heard all the friend of a friend says they've been illegal since 1972, but no one can point me to a specific law. If it ain't in writing, it ain't the law. I asked our local MSP CVE officer and he was the one who told me that the MH use only tires are what you can't use. The axles themselves are no differant than any other standard Dexter 3" tube 6,000# axle. Any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below. Thanks.

    Nice informative video.
    The key is not to overload the tires. I have a two axle equipment trailer with 7-14.5MH tires mounted on one-piece 5 lug wheels. I have used it for hauling a farm tractor for nearly 31 years with no issues. The tires were put on it by the licensed manufacturer. I live in California. All my buddies who knew better told me they were illegal and dangerous. Ok... So, to clear it up once and for all, I asked several state police commercial enforcement officers that I ran into about the "For mobile home use only" thing. All said that was meaningless to them. As long as the tire was not overloaded had sufficient tread and without flaw or defect, I was good to go. I have recently replaced them with 8-14.5 Low Boy tires.

      What do you think the weight rating is on those older 5 lug one piece rim axles? They seem to me to be more than the 3500 lb modern 5 lug rim axles. My modern single axle trailers axle is 2.25" diameter and is rated at 3500 lbs. The 1979 tandem axle trailer I have has 3'' axles. Both of these trailers have 5 lugs on the wheels.

      @@zoharflax6363 I would estimate a 3" x 3/16" wall axle with 5 lug, solid center wheels would be rated for 5,200 lbs. per axle, and using tires of the appropriate load range, of course. I looked up 3" axles on the Southwest Wheel website and those are the numbers they publish. Sorry for the late reply.

    I had the mobile home use only tires on my boat trailer. I replaced them with the regular trailer legal 14 ply tires for $126 dollars times 4. Easy peasy.

    What makes these wheels dangerous are the way they are mounted to the hub with clamps. If not mounted and tightened properly The whole wheel can come off. How do I know this? It happened to me I had a wheel come loose that wasn’t tightened properly, when it came off the axle, it lifted my whole equipment trailer up loaded with a skid steer and rolled out in traffic. Luckily I didn’t hit any cars.

      I believe so. Best evidence for that I've seen so far is the welded on brakes. Dayton style "lowboy" axles typically came with the bolt on backers. I'll upgrade these someday, lol. Thanks for watching.

    just got some mobile tire replacements at raber's ephrata pa is a non mobile tire is for highway, 14 ply, 3500# each $180/pc, also a new spare for $106, less weight rating on that, idk what it was

      Most of them are broken into two sizes. 3" axle tube is usually 3,500# and the 4" axle tube is usually 5,200#.

    Just picked up an older 28k gvwr eager beaver with a unique 4 axle expanded tandem set up (essentially 4 short 2' axles between the four sets of tires) so 8 tires/hubs total... With these older MH style hubs and rims. The inner tires are actually accessed from a removable floor section in the middle of the trailer.
    Could you point me in the direction you found the load range H tires? I've only been able to find G so far.
    Also, what's your opinion on the speed rating for these, I've read they shouldn't go over 60 mph, but not familiar with them enough to know if that's hard and fast or just a "suggestion"!!
    Thanks for the vids, very helpful stuff here!

      Those are neat old trailers. I've come across a few of that style over the ueats. Essentially wide set duallies, lol. The tires I used are LR G. Like you I haven't been able to find any H's. I believe they stopped making them since this style has dropped out of fashion for the more user friendly hub or stud pilot rims. I think you would be fine with G's. You would still have 24,800#'s of axle capacity plus 10% tongue carry would leave you still able to haul 27,300#'s total capacity. That's probably how they got the 28k rating anyway. New G's seem to be rated as high as the old H's. As far as speed, it depends on the speed index of your tires. Mine are K's so rated for 68 mph. I feel safe with 65 no problem. Jist make sure they are fully aired up every trip and you should be fine. 👍👍

    A guy has a 16' trailer for sale. He said it would haul my 4½ ton Kubota KX 121-3 mini excavator. I ask what the axle ratings were. He said 3500 each axle (two axles) and 10 ply tires. He said they were mobile home axles. Something doesn't add up, but I'm not an expert on hauling equipment and GVW stuff. I know if I go to high, I need a CDL, but under a certain weight, a regular driver's license will do. I'd really feel better with a couple of 5,200 axles. Is that realistic?

    • @1giantsgarage918
      @1giantsgarage918  3 роки тому +3

      If your mini x is 4.5 tons (9,000#'s), I think you would be pushing it to haul on a tandem axle trailer with MH style axles. It "probably" could be done, figuring each axle at 5,000# capacity each for a safety margin. 10,000# axle capacity + 600# hitch capacity minus 1,500# (est) for the trailer gives you 9,100# payload capacity. At 9,000# you would be right at the max weight (or jist over depending on weight of trailer). If it were me I would look for a tri-axle trailer myself or one with 7,000# axles for a safety margin. But, in theory, if everything on the trailer was in good shape, it should be able to haul it. Especially if you're only going short distances on flat ground.

    • @TBigLug
      @TBigLug 11 місяців тому +1

      I always use whatever the listed max psi is. My new tires are 115 psi. I have others that are 80 psi. Rides bouncier but keeps excess heat from building up.

    • @1giantsgarage918

      I thought I had a video on that but I don't see it. One thing I noticed with mine ia that around the valve stem area there is a bump with tapered sides. The first time I removed and remounted my rims I got too close to that and caused a wobbly rim. Beyond that, make sure you have all the rust you can cleaned off the rim itself. It alsp helps to have a second set of hands to start the bolts and wedges while you hold the rim and tire square to the drum. Start all the bolts and wedges by hand, finger tight. When you tighten them up do each one a little at a time working your way around the rim 3 or 4 times. Good luck.

    Question. The hub on my trailer are 8-14.4 but the rims are 7-14.5 so I just noticed that. Now, the rims are way bigger than the hub. Does it sound like the appropriate rim for the hub?

    • @1giantsgarage918
      @1giantsgarage918  2 роки тому

      Your hub should fit any of the 14.5 Dayton style rims.

    What what are those axles rated at? I just got a home made one that has 2 mobile home axles with 5 lug axles and the guy told me they are 10k axles idk if that’s right?

    • @1giantsgarage918
      @1giantsgarage918  2 роки тому

      That's correct as long as it has the 4" tube, it should be 5,200#'s each axle for 10,400#'s.

    • @1giantsgarage918
      @1giantsgarage918  2 роки тому

      Also, check your tires. It should have the 14.5-7 (common) or 14.5-8 (preferred). If it has the 14.5-6 (less common) they won't hold as much weight since those are generally only 1,500# tires.

    • @TBigLug
      @TBigLug Рік тому

      If it has been converted to say a flatbed, by definition it is no longer a mobile home, "technically." With that being said I've never had a police officer check mine. I have one on my trailer still a MH use only tire. If it's all you have it'll work. Just remember they are not rated as heavy as "low boy" tires.

    • @1giantsgarage918
      @1giantsgarage918  Рік тому

      That is not true at all. Even the "houses" themselves run 60-65 mph all day long in transport to and from their sites. Companoes will reuse the same axles under dozens of homes before retiring them. These axles use standard bearings and perform just as well as any other comparible trailer axle when maintained properly.

    • @1giantsgarage918

      I'm not sure the date of that tire. The 4 digit date code will tell you for sure. Usually first two indicate the week it was made and the last two will indicate the year. For example 1322 would be a tire made between March 20-26, 2022.
