Ena Sharples the dragon with the heart of gold. Annie and Hilda arguing, Elsie being feisty . A typical and wonderful episode of Corrie from the 60s. Thank you.
Violet Carson i believe wore three hair nets, because it showed up on the tv camera's (and on our tv screens) better. My late best friend worked with Violet Carson in the 70's, she told me that Violet was one of the nicest, kindest people to work with.
@@londonnodippydolly6635 Violet Carson really was a great lady and a true professional. Very ironic that it was actually Margot Bryant (Minnie Caldwell) who was the cuddly old lady on screen but the sharp battleaxe off screen.
@@kaiserwilhelmi6405 yes Margot Bryant, absolutely correct, the opposite of what she played, Margot Bryant was un married, and had no love of children, and Ena's third best friend Martha Longhurst played by a younger actress (only in her forties) was great friends with Violet Carson in real life, like Violet, Lynne was the opposite to what she played, and to add to that she was in reality a very elegant lady, dark wavy hair, and wore beautiful elegant dresses, she was barely recognisable as the lady who played Martha, for that part she donned a flat hat (that looked like a beret on the tv screen), and those horn rimmed spectacles had no lenses in them, the sad thing is the wonderful trio of best friends was reduced to a sad two when they made that terrible mistake of writing Martha out of the series in 1964, a decision that they openly admitted was the wrong one, so many stories could have still be written for the trio, but with just a duo, those stories were denied.
My Grandma worked with Violet Carson at the Scala cinema in Withington in the 1920s. She had a reputation for being bad tempered and bossy but she lost her husband of 2 years in 1929 which may have made people misread her.....??? My Grandma was usually a good judge of character though, well liked and friendly to all ❤️💔❤️🩹 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cine_City,_Withington
@ninaleach6350 thank you for your reply, maybe it was because her husband had passed?? All i know is my best friend said Violet was really lovely and very nice and kind to her when they worked together, and if Violet had been any different to her my best friend would be the first to say, death can effect people in different ways, my best friend passed in 2022 aged 95 and things are very different without her.
I would want Ena Sharples in my corner every time. The sort of honest, straight-talking person who would give you a right rollocking and then offer an arm around your shoulder.
Mrs Sharples: I don’t care if you tell Doctor Who. Gold! So many of them gone, but nice to see there are still some elements of this ep in the world: Bill Roache, Anne Reid, Eileen Derbyshire, Gillian McCann, Anne Kidd (the younger nurse), Mark Lilley (the kid), Doctor Who and, of course, the Street itself :)
Paul Darrow who played Dr Matthews will always be remembered as Avon in Blakes 7. He also appeared in the scary Hammer House of Horror episode Guardian Of The Abyss. Vi and Pat are on the top of their game in this classic episode.
Fantastic episode, thank you as always for uploading. Powerful scenes, especially from Ena praying 🙏 and also Elsie & Dot. Poor Elsie, Linda not coming to support her in court case, putting on a brave face. Fab acting again from Pat
Interesting that this episode seen here in colour, was transmitted before the colour tv start date 15 nov 1969, the opening and end credits seen are in black & white, it’s good that Granada tv kept this archived.
These pre-15th November episodes were colour test transmissions by the ITA. Although I believe the lucky few with a colour tv in the right regions could have watched these in colour back in 1969 if they retuned their sets.
This happend the yr before i was born so NEVER saw any of these episodes so its a plasure to watch them on here! ...I was born 1970 so grew up with a lot of the cast that came in from the begining and stayed till they either reitered, left the street or passed away so Ihave great memories of the regular cast growing up in the 70s to the 80s (AND TO ME THIS IS CLASSIC CORRY NOT THE STUFF THEY REPEAT FROM THE 90S THESE DAYS ON TV!) such as Annie walker, elise tanner, ena, ken, stan and hilda , betty , ray langton etc! BUT watching this I NEVER KNEW (as obv hadnt seen the episode befor) the doctor in the hospital was played by Paul Darrow who went onto to play Kerr avon in blakes 7! TBH I don't watch corry these days as its gone all sensational with so called BIG epic story lines that drag on like eastenders and all the other soaps now just to get the ratings ...its not the beast it used to be that ACTUALY set out to portrai Northern life in manchester ..i know times change but corry these days dosn't have any characters that became beloved such as (stan and hilda, vera and jack, there are a few but such as roy, fizz etc) but there is no comedic double act charachters anymore realy ..well not on the level of stan and hilda and jack and vera !
How charming this was. A group of people who care for each other but nit pick like children in the school play ground. lol. So much more innocent than what’s called entertainment now.
I wonder if this story is based on then current affairs as they were when this was filmed in November 1969. As in reality in August 1969, 3 months before this , a coach did actually crash in Country Durham killing 19 people on a bus out of control coming back from a bowls club competition.
Sorry, but Ena Sharples was 98% malicious old bag, 2% heart of gold. We have the 2% on display here. 'Get well, Minnie, so I can get back to bullying you'.
Black and white opening titles, but the rest in colour. Strange. ITV would launch their full colour television service ten days later after this episode aired in November 1969.
Interesting that the director let her slip up at 1: 51 stay in without a second action. Nowadays, that just isn't acceptable. We all do it, but it's nothing to do another take.
Back then it was expensive to do reshoots so they tended to avoid them unless it was something they really couldn’t recover from so you see a lot of actors fluff their lines or be forced to ad-lib. I even saw one episode where somebody had to shout Violet Carson’s next line from the studio floor when she froze during a scene. As this is one of the first colour episodes I imagine the film stock was even more expensive at the time and they wouldn’t have got away with a reshoot without a very good reason. Although I think it adds to the overall authenticity as we all trip up our words from time to time.
@@paulybarr Back then a little slip up like that they let it pass, 'Coronation Street' wasn't the only programme to let this sort of thing go by, 'Crown Court', 'Doctor Who' etc, had their share of slip up's, microphones appearing above the actors heads of a shadow of one was another common thing, alot of actors had theatre acting behind them so they would never panic if they made a slip up, also it is one of the reasons actors spoke so clearly every line, because of their training.

They all like those dressings looked unreal, one big joke in bad acting.
Still got that ridiculous hair net on
UA-cam does get the algorithm right sometimes ! ! What a great find ! 🙏❤️🇬🇧
OMG it's Nov 5, 2024. I remember watching this in Liverpool when I was 4 all the way until I came to America. Look at the date.i
In spite of her sharp tongue and manner, Ena Sharples would be a friend I'd be pleased to have.
Please show more of these coronation street videos they are so good to look back on thank you👍👍👍👍👍
Wow wow how amazing to watch these episodes. I loved Betty Turpin as she kept it real.🏴🙂
Yes, it's a soap, but everyone just seems so nice. I just can't imagine anything like this done nowadays
Ina is actually very sweet. She has a heart of gold. Thanks for uploading.
Everyone loves Ena Sharples.......!
These episodes are brilliant..more please.
Thank you for bringing back these early episodes…. So wonderful 🥰
What a lovely ending. I was born in 67 but recall reading about the coach crash.
Check out a young Paul Darrow (Avon in Blakes 7) as the doctor!

These episodes where just before my time but I've watched them since and the acting and storylines where so much better and realistic back then.
And not as rushed. They stayed longer in a scene,,
What a lovely comment, for which I can totally agree with.
Gosh I vaguely remember this episode, I was 5 years old and cried because I didn't want Minnie Caldwell to die. 😪😪
These are what made Corrie great, real characters people you could relate too, great memories.
This was on my first birthday 🎈

Miss this lot 😢
Coronation Street was really enjoyable back in the day, it’s declined into c**p in more recent times, just like the others
I love stan❤
"I don't care if you tell dr 'oo" love ena
Stan Ogden looked/sounded the same as his same cheery self after his accident, I’m certain that I would not have felt the same.

They wouldnt have done that so soon. It is better than the tram crash in later years. This was more believable.
Better acting back then 😊
Yes much more natural.
Well, they only made 2 episodes a week back then and had time to for rehearsal . They churn them out these days .
