Oh how far we have come……and how sad we are now.
Such sweetness in this, just a window into the lives of ordinary people, with joys and sorrows, arguments and togetherness. No stupid overblown violent or sordid plots, just lives lived.
I haven’t watched it for a few decades now because of the ridiculous plots.
From clips I’ve seen, I’ll not watch again.
This is lovely to see, memories abound of more innocent times.
Thank you.😊
My wee mum loved Corrie so much, if she was still here she would be over the moon to see these old episodes online.
The way Jack Walker talked Betty and Hilda into accepting Annie's gifts - just beautiful and subtle writing and acting, and I love the dark humour between Ray and Ena - so appreciated by Ray who didn't want to be mollycoddled - very very cleverly done.
I agree, acting so natural, it was like watching genuine lives lived, not exaggerated versions of the worst of humanity.
A pure joy, made me feel cosy and warm. 😊
@@Rowan-d2y Brilliant comment thank you - YES - exactly!!
I miss old 🏴 England what a beautiful country to grow up in
Gone forever 😢
I was 7 then and I agree
@@stephenholmes1036 me twelve
I miss you old Corrie ❤ Merry Christmas to the cast and every person watching this in December ❄️☃️❄️⛄️
It's woke excrement now.
❤❤❤❤❤❤ takes me back to my childhood . The first colour tv we had, we saw Hilda Ogdens lip stick, fot the first time. Truly loved those Characters they were so funny and real. Haven't watched Corronation street for 30 years , its an insult to its creators.
Annie Walker's face spoke volumes! She was really very funny!
The early episodes of Coronation Street are just Brilliant, storylines, characters, a perfect blend of drama and humour, I wish life was that good now!
These scripts reflected the times and oh how they have changed....and not for the better. Social media and mobile phones and PC's were for the future and things that I as a child in the late 60's did not conceive of or be affected by. Those days of family gatherings around an open fire and a black and white TV and paper xmas decorations (as seen being hung in this actual episode) are memories that I cherish to this very day as a retiree: 2nd January 2025.
Ooh!!! To be back in those days. Just beautiful 💐
At 21:31 when Ena & Emily sing "In Dublin's Fair City", I can only say that it is the best duetted version I have ever heard of it. Violet Carson herself was such an amazing singer and I have her hymns and arias in my collection. The way these two crooned this beautiful song together made me feel so much better from the inside. It is true when people have said and commented on some of these videos that Coronation Street will not be as amazing as it was then, ever again. I don't need to explain why because I think even just the talent shown in this small performance not to mention the whole episode and all other episodes till about 1984 (when Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner) leaves), explains it all perfectly. I also adore Minnie & Valerie's short scene in the hairdresser's at 2:54. Minnie is so adorable! Bless em all! Honestly always makes my day. Thank you for sharing this. It is indeed much appreciated.
Hi, what a fantastic comment. I so so agree!
And Albert at the end of course - beautiful.
Yes, I so agree, beautiful comment, i So Wish, as so many others do as well, that things wouldn't change, it's so unfortunate
Yes. Actors and actresses who were all masters of their craft .
I was surprised Betty Driver didn't sing, you are right about the duet lovely!
Violet Carson was a good pianist too!
The difference between today and this. I don’t think it’s untrue to say the only connection is the title of the programme. I do not watch the show today. This is the true meaning of the good old days. Ena Sharples what a woman.I’ve watched a lot of older coronation street programmes of late and they feed you. The stuff made today doesn’t interest me , I so wish it did entertain me as it’s sad that such a programme with its past style , excellence and unique qualities just doesn’t grab me as it did once
Agree 100%, there is no comparison, the early episodes are outstanding in every way. Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining;
Easy to forget this was 53 years ago. It's as distant in time as 1916 was to 1969. It's a blessing that we are living longer now, but the painful side is that we all have to accept that the world we grew up with eventually dies and disappears.
I feel exactly the same, it was light hearted and a lot of fun back then. ❤️
I totally agree with you Chris!
Well said, This is exactly how I feel about it these days..These old episodes are like a glass of fine ,mature wine
18:58 Irma's impression of Hylda Baker was very good. The trip up the stairs by Gordon Kaye was total improv and wonderful.
I had no idea it was Gordon Kaye. I did think the woman was a man though.
@@Ian-gw2vx He looked like Albert Steptoe in the Episode where Albert dressed up as his late wife to claim her pension.
The street was an array of talent.
Perfect character driven writing and acting, so so much better than the Corrie codswallop of Christmas 2020.
That’s why I watch a lot of these “classic” episodes (that and the fact that some of my hobbies and jobs from the past have sorta-required it). I don’t mind 2022 Corrie (it’s nowhere-near as bad as it was under Blackburn) but without a lot of these key legendary figures (or even the likes of Candice, dare-I-say) it just doesn’t feel the same.
very true
Yes, but Corrie Codswallop is better than no codswallop at all...and we get to watch these nice episodes. Thanks very much to the persons who take time to make it possible.
@@suzanndurrette120 I agree 100% with your second point, these old shows are wonderful, however my jury is well and truly out on your first one.
Happy memories ! Thanks for uploading.
I see Granada made it in colour , there weren't that many colour sets in the UK in 69. A neighbour had one and it got stolen !!.
Thanks for uploading it .
You and Jerry are stars for uploading all these Corrie episodes, makes me feel old but love watching them, thanks so much x
Yes but not all episodes are there
No murders, no sordid affairs , no long lost children coming back. Corrie now has been ruined imo. Great characters, great storylines and very well acted back 8n the day
Oh yeah , and I suppose Ray Langton’s affair with married Audrey , soon after this episode wasn’t ‘sordid’ ?
IMO the writers of soaps today want to be American. Like Days of our Lives, General Hospital, The Young and the Restless. Utter nonsense. These old Corrie episodes are wonderful.
The TV producers don't grasp that you need a balance of drama and humour. Gentle humour/ misunderstandings is not only an option it's an essential ingredient.
Love the old Corrie. I haven't watched in years. Its garbage now.
An Aboriginal mate in Australia still spoke of Ena Sharples recently,he loved her, fond memories
It was one of the best kitchen sink dramas ever. Not the same today.
Wonderful harmonies from Emily and Mrs Sharples. 👏
I had the privilege of visiting the set as a photography student in 1988. Went in the Rovers and it was tiny. Met Liz Dawn (Vera) at lunch who sat on our table in the nearby pub over the road, tipped her short into her pint glass of beer and winked at me.
The set is often smaller than depicted.
Wonderful episodes and acting and writing! Thank you so much for posting these gems. I wouldn't have seen them otherwise. I wish the current Coronation Street could bring back at least some of the talent from this era.
This is a real treat. Loved the concert.
Alberts monologue at the end was beautiful
It really was
Serious shades of the Dietrich movie: The Blue Angel, in the stage act of Irma and Bernard. Scary. Sad. Thanks again for taking the time to post. Such a treat.
Sandra Gough's Hilda Baker was pretty good, but Lynne Perrie's performance at Christmas 1977 had me in stitches!
Very good
Wow - the writing, script and character development is so so so superior to the tripe that passes as the same show these days.
Really enjoying these in lockdown
Time moves oni guess but these old episodes of corrie are great
I watch old episodes a lot i really enjoyed this thankyou❤
most excellent, seemed like we were watching a play.
Emily has a lovely singing voice. So much stronger than her speaking voice.
😂the era when i loved to watch Coronation Street .
Cant be bothered with it now .
Love these old episodes, absolute gems! Similarly,I’ve recently watched old(1972) episodes ofemmerdale, slower but much more gripping than the rubbishy programme they put out now!
What innocent times so unlike today.
They had murders, drugs, racism, thefts ect, then as we have had from the beginning of time, still retro, corrie wonderful 😊
I’d love to see an up to date version of this on Corrie. I loved it then, I love it now.
My childhood was the 90s and I reckon I'd have been content with life in general being as it was then. If not however, I'd be just as happy to have experienced and kept things as they were in this episodes era.
Same hear 90s kid too. Things where harder then but their was a community spirt. Like they could get through anything together. It's just not like that anymore it's a shame
@@cherylreznor181 what utter rubbish. Nobody in the their right mind would want to go back to then. Britain was a grey, dull country with social attitudes that would curdle milk. Few prospects for kids apart from being factory fodder. I very, very much doubt you are a child of the 90s
I can assure you that you would not. Britain was a grey, dull, boring and dirty place. No prospects for working class kids other than as factory fodder. Nasty, intolerant social attitudes.
@@zeddeka we all have different opinions but please don't try calling me a liar I was born 1987. If you think todays children are far better that's up to you. My opinion and having 3 children in there teens who I'm everyday worried about because of the world we now live in, like i said that's my opinion i can only judge the day we live in now for my children because obviously my kids where not kids in the 90s. My childhood was ok i would hate to be young and live through today being a teenager there is a lot of pressure to be a certain way look a certain way.. Im not saying I'm right, I'm just saying it's what I think
@@zeddeka can i just guess something? Are you one of those woke people if you are you need shooting. (That's my opinion again sorry :(
, shooting with a water pistol I ment... ). people should be free! Free do what they want be what they want act how they want.. People are so deluded of they think we have made the world a better place.. Because we have never been as restricted and scared to be who we are more than now!!! I dont care if anyone is a different colour sex or sexual preference to me I just don't care!! and I doubt many people care. I don't think many people do care a person is a person no matter who they but the world is more divided than it has ever ever been! People are petrified people are scared! because people cant speak anymore incase anything they may say will be took out of context. And that may cause offence without wanting to cause offence, the worlds gone mad and if you truly think this world has gone better, then sort ur woke head out!! Bring back any decade except for this one... And things and the world will go much worse... Until it is completly destroyed which it will be sooner than you think
Back then there were characters you cared about and storylines that were believable. Note the strong female characters were the backbone of the show.
They were its strength, Though Jack Walkervwas great
This old show has- Great writing. Great performances
&
Today's TV series - written by tomatoes. Full of tacky crude storylines. Actors from IKEA (wooden)
What a huge difference in quality.
Oh my goodness
Uncle Albert's song is wonderful!
Aww dear little Minnie Caldwell ❤
Annie Walker, what a legend.
I liked Jack, together what a team
When Jack says 'I'd say you have egg on your face Anne, pretty thick egg too Anne' kills me every time!
Arthur Leslie was a cracking actor
No tats. No piercings. No LBQtetc. Just good old fashioned hair nets.
And no shouting
Soaps where better in the good old days
Ena's dress is lovely, what a lady.
Mother loved Coronation Street.
Kitchen sink drama. Mondays and Wednesdays
Stan`s been at his Christmas Port again - on Christmas Eve. Oh, but its only ten `o` clock in the morning. Exactly, Hilda !
See how easy it is to ressurect arguments over a short glass of port after over 50 years ? All you have to do is watch Coronation Street and its as fresh as the day it was made.
I just happen to be drinking port while watching this episode. Stan had something.
There are many comments outlining the differences between the Coronation Street of 1969 and of the current age. Especially, the lack of sensationalism, crime in general and the need to shock. What we forget is that each generation of Coronation Street reflects the age in which we live. The episodes of today reflect how society has become. More connected and better informed in many ways, yet more disjointed and more ignorant. The society of 1969 were also far less mobile and were very aware of their position within a group as an individual. We are now far more mobile and the emphasis has shifted greatly to the individual, thus weakening that group mentality. Mountains are all too often now made of molehills whereas with the issue of the necklace in this episode, it was resolved and put to rest with a simple gift of a pair of stockings ('nylons' as they called them). The molehill, thus remaining a molehill and being easily flattened. Of course, 1969 wasn't without its social problems either and was certainly not an easy life, but people had the ability to be more content with their lot in life. That is a skill that I think we have somewhat lost despite having more.
I'm old enough to remember nights like this. Yesterday, please leave me alone.
"Try shoving it up your jumper." Good for you, Jack.
Thanks again for the treat. Although it's Christmas, if Ray wasn't in the wheelchair....I'd be more than tempted to throw in a towel, grab Bernard and say: "The fights over, kid. It's not your night." And then announce that the real show was a fistfight with Ray and I onstage.
Soaps of that era struck the right balance between drama and humour. Todays soaps both tv and radio seem to go for shock value with over dramatic storylines. Which is why I don’t watch or listen to them anymore.
I haven’t watched coronation street for years, it used to be believable.
No Drugs no stabbings no grooming gangs
Erm, you're joking? There was a lot of drugs in the 60s. You had Jimmy saville, Cyril Smith, and a galaxy of other child abusers. You had the krays and the Richardsons. The 60s were as nasty as any other decade, it was just all brushed under the carpet.
This is so good
Sobering to think that the vast majority of these actors are dead now.
Ty so much for uploading these episodes great fan from nz here 💓
By eck, Ena had a beautiful voice
Violet Carson was a great trained singer there's an album of her singing
Agreed, she was a first rate pianist and don't forget Betty Driver she was a first class singer
Its a shame Arthur Leslie (Our Jack) didnt last until Annie left
I remember seeing a clip from later, with Ivy and Vera doing Hylda Baker.
Yes. December 77.
Ena and that hair net. As funny as Nora Batty and her wrinkled stockings. Also, @19:01, is that a very young Rene from Alo Alo?
Yeah it is Gordon Kaye.
Never thought I'd see uncle albert doing some rapping.
Some of the old actors trod the boards all over the country and went through a terrible world war. Betty was a renowned singer and made films. Today its same old same old bores me rigid.❤
Betty Driver was a great singer with the dance bands
A lovely episode, How they missed Jack Walker
Amazing characters
It was a great program, down the pan like most things these days.
Brilliant!
Coronation Street today has become sensationalist with a constant need to excite the viewer at all costs. No matter how extreme and unbelievable the storyline. It’s total rubbish and totally lost its meaning. It’s nice to head back and see what it used to be about.
“Try pushing it up your jumper” !!!!!!!!!😂
It Broadcast on Wednesday 24 December Christmas eve 1969
My first Christmas
Camp as hell as we enter the debaucherous 70's.
I totally agree Caroline. BTW I love your selection of hits over on your profile. The Woman HAS taste.
show business is camp, always been so, think greek plays, shakespeare could only use men, i have been in show business as a woman, but given a deadline at 25 years old, gave up and married
p.s. not i got anything against camp, some of my best mates were, being in the business
I miss Stan and Hilda .
Second best Christmas Coronation Street. The Best ever xmas episode to these eyes is 1972.
Hi. for me it's THE best ever, closely followed by the Ogdens' party, Christmas Eve 1980.
I love the idea of "jolly" Albert Tatlock as Santa.
😂😂😂😂
It’s nothing like this now 😢😢 what a shame 😢 I blame the current producer Ian McCloud. It’s absolutely Rubbish now. I can understand why Beverly Callard left the show! Crap story lines ! No humour, no light hearted stories !! 😢😢
Oh! I've never seen Ena without her drab overcoat!
I'd never seen her in a good mood 😆
At 16:18 you can see the missing wall and cameras when Ken goes through the door into the Select.
I couldn't c anything
LEGENDS PERSONIFIED XXXXX
A great era 😢
I believe Jack Howarth started out in the variety hall comedy circuit before the advent of TV and becoming Albert Tatlock.
I spotted him in a Scotland Yard episode from the 1950s on Talking Pictures.
He was also in the 1953 David Lean classic Hobson's Choice
Grew up with coronation street great to see episodes before I was born this was a year before I was born
Was 9 months old when this was on
I was age half!
Why did you feel the need to tell us that? We've all been nine months old.
Fun fact; Len Fairclough sat in the corner on drums had no trousers on 😂.
fun fact indeed
Colour era begins
shame, i do so liked black and white , easy on the eyes
I can’t remember the last time I watched coronation street it’s absolutely rubbish the best days were the 70s 80s&90s these days it’s like hollyoaks I can’t bear watching that rubbish either
Just when you thought Emily couldn't get any more boring....she sings a number from the time when Albert Tatlock was in his pram.
Omg that song😂😂😂 was she doing sign language???😂😂😂😂😂😂
Have to echo wot's said below: shows ain't wot they used to be . At least Coronation Street is not. FF 50+ years to witness a travesty of wot this great series once was.
Aww Len. That 'tache was terrible.
Have you seen his curly perm from 1980? If not, you haven't lived. 😂
It was probably just the fashion of the times.
Ernie without glasses! (I'm skipping around a bit in my viewing.)
So lovely to get a glimpse of Violet, rather than Ena, when she sang that duet.
Oh i never thought of that - Guess Christmas cards should have a picture of a sandal or a camel on them instead of a robin
Fantastic episode, thank you. Do you have New Years Eve please where Alan stands Elsie up ?
12:22 all through the concert i just wanted to say "shut up Ray!!!!"
Sandra Gough was brilliant.
Hmm a song a about someone called Ada Price - Cant say i have ever heard of her
10/10
