For many years, my best friend was gay. When we would go out he would laugh at me, saying that I might be sexually straight but I was socially gay. When I was with him I felt free to be flamboyant and maybe even a little camp; having fun with it without all the social conventions and judging. I think every one of us would be different, in some way, if we only had the courage to not care what others thought of us. I'm still not gay but I'm 65 now and I really don't care what people think of me. Thank you Andrew RIP.

@@London20258 You are very welcome ny friend. But I can't take credit. My best friend changed me from being an average, casually homophobic man, "it's just a joke", I'm sure you know what i mean, to someone with an open mind full of love instead of hate and judgement.

Rupaul used to come into my job Atlanta Fulton library back in the days. I got to see him perform at backstreet-what a time to be in Atlanta.
I was there then. Not gay but had gay friends and coworkers that I went clubbing with some. RuPaul was just making a name for himself, and the whole scene was party, party, party. Great memories @

Backstreet, Club Rio and the gay K (Krystal on Peachtree). Those were the salad days.

It's so easy to catch RuPaul's energy. I know how hard it is to be an introvert in an extrovert world so I'm even more impressed.
I feel that too. It's hard for me to be an extrovert and make friends. I've faked it before but my gosh, it took so much of energy out of you. It's hard to keep it up and be loud and all that.
Shocked to learn RuPaul is an extroverted introvert too! This gives me hope.

I felt that too. I am also an introvert masking as an extrovert.
I am "on" in a crowd and when I get home I am happy but exhausted.
Isn't that a normal survival mechanism for introverts, though? Just try to fall into what society seems to want from you? Being an introvert also doesn't mean not being social, it just means social gatherings drain our energy, so we have to recharge by doing things by ourselves, so you can just be a socially outgoing introvert.

The mask part is so true (as well as the drag). Remember when David Jones changed his name to Bowie but was still a nervous performer until he invented a persona to do the talking? Then he couldn't stop.

I've always loved Ru Paul, and this is one of the most fun interviews I've ever seen. Ru and Stephen have such great chemistry together, and I can almost imagine them being friends in "real life."

Me and some friends from university found out there was a movie filming with RuPaul in it and they needed extras. We woke up early on a Saturday, got there for the crowd scene. RuPaul walked right by me but we weren't supposed to notice him. Then we had breakfast at Dennys.

Now I understand why I like Ru Paul so much ... we share being introverts in an extrovert career. I used to worry about that, but then I discovered that a majority of my colleagues shared the same experience. Dealing with people the way we did required down-time so that we could be at our best when needed.

Stephen has an amazingly retentive memory & he often finds the perfect literary reference as in his immediate comprehension of Ru Paul’s mother’s saying when he rattled off the evocative passage from Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians, King James translation: “For now we see through a glass darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am now.” I’m an atheist, but appreciate Colbert’s sense of the sublime through his religion. His conversations with Paul Simon, Anderson Cooper, Keanu Reeves, & Andrew Garfield all dealt profoundly with issues of grief & gratitude.
RuPaul is a treasure to America!!

I used to work drag pageant fundraising events where big Texan good ol’ boys would be nominated to be in the pageant and we’d doll them up and send em down the runway (money nominates, they can pay big $ to get out of it or walk and collect money onstage… most money at the end of the night wins and it all goes to the charity!), and they’d CHANGE once they were all dressed and laughing!!

It is my sincere wish that Ru Paul know how much he/she means to us in terms of being a solid unwavering champion of self love. There is no way to address every single life experience and the fears that come from wondering if your difference from other people is ok, but RuPaul comes very, very close. I want him to know how much the example he and she sets for those of us who have no champion for self love. Those of us with strange traumas and the affects that make us different from everyone appreciate that someone speaks up for self love, esteem and acceptance. You are the Queen of promoting self Esteem. Thank you from the world. You carry that message of love perfectly and with such style and panache. Thank you!

I preordered this book. When the email came in that it was out…I ran to read!
We grew up in Atlanta during the 90's with the mohawk RuPaul. He loved to dance on the speaker at Weekends. Once, he left to go get a drink and my roommate, a 5ft 4" girl, got on the speaker and when RuPaul got back, he was NOT happy about it. Oh how times have changed.
He’s been doing the talk show circuit. He’s just so great. We all love him.
