There are many better places to build without destroying community green space and an important national historic landmark. Just around the NE corner of the park is a huge brown shingle bldg that's boarded up. Nearby to the west on Channing is a parking structure that can't be used because of EQ risk. Build housing there, not on the park! Also, they could build east of campus where they're removing thousands of eucalyptus trees due to fire risk. Instead of replanting w/ fire-resistant redwoods, they're just letting native shrubs take over. Build there instead of destroying our park.

People's Park has NOT been the same iconic People's Park since about 1998-ish. The People's Park that some of us remember, unlike probably 80% of the "protestors" (too young to remember) has been LONG-GONE for over 20 years now. The People's Park that was part of the civil rights movement, hippie hangout,...peaceful park, etc...has been GONE since the late 90's and has been primarily a spot to score drugs, like crack, at ever since. People's Park is a peaceful hippie park turned "dope spot", back in the 90's. Nothing good has come out of the park since like 1997. Last I saw it, it was a total homeless encampment... that we all know damn well is (was) infested with dangerous ass street drugs, like the ones my good friend overdosed on, and died as a result of, IN THAT PARK.

Turns out the whole park was filled with homeless thugs who got very territorial because apparently we were sitting on “their bench”. Didn’t want any trouble so we left and sat on the sidewalk. A few minutes later this guy gets chased out the park by someone wearing boxing gloves wanting to fight him. We felt very unsafe and just went our way.

I helped plant an olive tree there in early 90s, played frisbee. People's park activists should keep homeless encampments out for the sake of the park. This is what happens when we don't keep it as a public park. Homeless encampments should b semi self sufficient, organized, clean, limited occupants, spread out in more remote areas. So sad to see trees cut down so quickly.
