At my old club, 3d flying was frowned upon due to the flyers. There were 3 of them with giant scale IMAC planes. They would go out one by one for 15 minutes each, hovering or other aerobatics right over the runway, rendering it unusable for any one else for 30 to 45 minutes. We’d try to talk to them about spreading it out so others could fly, but they always had a reason, needing to practice for a meet, etc., for what they did. It didn’t end nicely. One guy quit, one guy was uninvited from the club, the last guy would fly, wait for 45 min or so, so others could fly, then he’d go up again. That worked for everyone. Courtesy all the way around helps a great deal.
Yup! I'm a 3D flyer myself. I always ask permission to fly with others (given the erratic nature of it :p), and always announce when I'm gonna be "farting around 1-2 feet off the runway" (my own words), doing low passes, etc, and immediately rocketing upwards clear of the runway when someone announces they're landing or doing a low pass. The rest of the time I pay attention to my peripheral vision, knowing my aircraft is extremely maneuverable and can pull straight up like a rocket ship to get out of the way.
People return me the favor, asking if they may fly when I'm in the air, and I always agree pretty much unless I'm on a maiden.
Main thing that drove me away from the local flying field are all the old heads who take themselves too seriously. And lets not forget the retired guys who fly turbines... on a Saturday... that will be doing engine runs while you're piloting your EDF hoping you don't stall due to not being able to hear it.

You guys are absolutely HILARIOUS! I rarely subscribe to channels but I'm hooked here. Never been in a club or even to a club meet, but will probably sometime in the near future. I've flown rc planes for over a couple decades, but they've always been the cheaper department store "toys". Finally made the investment into a hobby grade model, slowly grabbing up the electronics. Once I have everything together, It's in my best interest to rub elbows with far more seasoned rc pilots than myself before getting my expensive bird out on it's maiden crash test.
Good plan. An R/C simulator is a great investment as well. Hopefully the club field is one with welcoming seasoned rc pilots. I think it may help for someone new to the club scene to make trips out to the club without any models at first and ask questions, find out who the nice and knowledgeable people are out there who seem to actually want to answer questions and help out a potential new member and go from there.
I think any airplane will struggle to maintain altitude once the fuel tank is empty. Well, unless it's already on the ground. Like the song says, you can't be let down if you're already standing on the ground.

Build it light. Definitely 👍, On another channel a warbird review of a P40 80", the host was lamenting about the lightening hole weakening the structure. On the maiden had a dead stick quite far from the runway but was just barely able to get it back safely. Good thing it was light buddy, right?
When I started flying (way to long ago) I was told the FIRST MOST IMPORT LAW OF R/C... No matter what you are doing taking off is ALWAYS OPTIONAL but once airborne PHYSICS will see that you land (one way or another)
7:37 I can fully respect the skill it takes to fly it, but I genuinely can't tell 3D from malfunctioning electronic parts. Don't understand the appeal of it myself.

3:10 They have this same rule in general aviation. If the weather is more than you are sure you can deal with, don't fly.
"I think I can make it." isn't good enough. You are not only betting your own life, you are betting the lives of those who have put their lives in your hands. Don't be like Stockton Rush and think you know more than people who are more experienced than you.
And if you are in California don't be in a rush to get to Stockton. There is nothing there worth rushing for.
Who would even name there kid Stockton? Probably parents who have something wrong with them, which explains a lot.
Only thing that sucks abt 3d flying is the fact that like u said as a joke, ppl see it as a crime. Whenever I am at a smaller field I always give way to those around me before flying and as soon as I start to fly someone gets mad at me, mind you, when I'm around non 3d pilots I chill it down a bit I put the plane farther out there and I don't put anyone's planes, cars, or lives in danger, only thing that's rlly negative about this hobby. All I can say for anybody out there wanting to fly 3D or just flying it, get around those who share that interest, its way more fun and they don't get mad if u do some insanely aggressive maneuver like a super low no name or rifle roll. Ive been in the hobby since 2008. When i first joined my club, i was almost driven away because of the older guys. I had 4 strikes against me when i first walked in the gate. 1. I flew electric instead of gas/glow. 2. I flew strictly (at the time) helis. 3. I flew 2.4 GHz instead of 72 mHz. 4. I was active duty military. Out of +/-50 people, 3 took me under their wing and gave me a good start in a wonderful hobby. The others would walk right by me and flat out ignore me even if i said hi, how are you? I walked away (from the club)for about two years until i ran into one of the three friendlies who talked me into going back. I did because most of the old guys were gone. I vowed i would never make a new enthusiast feel the way those old guys made me feel, even to the point of giving a new guy one of my planes because he'd just catastrophically crashed his only model. Sorry for the long post.

When you said vertical stabilizer haircut, it made me think of when my dad was flying his four star 40 and I was flying my ultra stick.(the red one) my dad decided to fly right over me, head on, and shredded my ruder. Still flew perfectly fine👍
This is why I have my own rc airfield ponds and all and welcome anyone to come fly and even have a few flite test simple cubs built out of balsa for new flyers who never flown before to fly and get hooked and guess what I own the field and never had a single fight and have 30 ppl every weekend in summer and everyone helps with maintaining the field since I don't charge ppl to fly basically I don't gotta mow or weed eat my own fields or property and they even help me keep the huge pond cleaned up for water planes and 3d water flying. I turned one of my 10 eluna powered 1.3 sport gliders when they was 85 bucks BNF with free spectrum rx into a long range powered glider and I can sit on my back patio outside furniture couch and chill and fly at 250 feet and fly for 4 hours and fly around my neighborhood or use it to look where deer are hanging out at for hunting season or before I hit the woods cuse it's quieter then a drone

Too many flyers omit the learning part, they just crash and repeat. They have stupid sayings like "if you're not crashing you're not learning" or it's "all part of the hobby." As if, crashing is a prerequisite for learning? Move out of your comfort zone, by all means but there are ways to minimize the risks of a crash. They have an incident and do little to no analysis, because that would interfere with their fun, Fun, fun fun! Next time someone cuts off their fingers from a prop, tell them "it's all part of the hobby."
i'd love to join a indoor dogfight club. but building plane part of it so can have a lot of crashes and not get too worked up about it. the cut the tail with the prop type. i think my improvement as a flyer and plane builder would be so much faster. my adhd brain needs that feirce competition. i don't know why its not more popular.

U know I build a lot full time, and made a 1.6m plane 2.7kg 14s and the balsa wood guys hate it because it's fibre glass and carbon fibre, don't get it u got to move with the times flying light much easy and I'm not experienced anough

That video where a beautify built A6M Zero is making a high speed fly-by and hits something (I think a helicopter) then crashes into tiny pieces, followed by a loud argument (Frankly I couldn't tell who was at fault, but it sure looked like it was the Zero pilot) made me wonder why they can't have someone act as a tower controller when the field is busy.
Just have one person who is responsible for knowing what is going on and issuing clearances.
"Tower, this is Frank, can I make a flyby?"
"Negative, helicopter near the runway"

3D is why I alway have an OLD POS to fly making Low Level Passes over the RunWay when these Yahoos HOG the RUNWAY. The Club in Arizona has a Rule you make all Low passes on the far side (Out Side0 of the 00' wide runway. The Runway is for Take Off and Landings ONLY if not doing one of these then don't be over the runway.

I like to build aircraft, and go though about one a year. I am constantly (in a controlled environment) pushing these aircraft to their limits, and have a sort of “destructive testing” learning style. Hey, it’s just foam I don’t mind repairing crash damage.
I sometimes run into people who basically think that any and all crashes are well, immoral or something. They really give me the business and try to make it seem like I’m going to end the world with my “recklessness”.
How do I respond diplomatically to these people? They tend to be balsa kit flyers, and the idea of not worrying about a crash because foam can be fixed with hot glue in all of 5 mins (I often will do several crash-rebuild at the field cycles per session) seems to really really just get to them. They basically want to see me grounded permanently if they could have their way. I disagree, as I went to school for risk management and have never injured anyone, nor have come close to it. If I crash some foam into a grassy field with no one within a mile of me, whats the harm? Chances are I was trying to learn slow speed controls, or testing out some new technology feature I installed (and tech ALWAYS has bugs).
Anyone know how to diplomatically deal with these people who more or less seem to have an issue with someone who indulges in risk managed crashes every so often? I would prefer to get along with them enough to get involved with the local flight club, and even when I’m flying carefully and adhering to “no crashes allowed”, they still seemingly have beef with me. I don’t get it but I’d like to be able to at least co-exist with those people for the sake of having flying buddies

That may have been too harsh. Honestly, in real life, this sport melds together 2 things that don't normally mesh together 1)Tech/nerd stuff like electronics and craftsmanship and radio operation basics, etc... and 2) Actual real world experience--- this is not a computer game. You need to understand how things act in the REAL world, like, as he mentioned, grass height, and also other things like changing wind, sun glare, turbulence, etc. A third thing occurred to me, 3) interpersonal relations---not always the strong point of nerds. (And that is not meant as an insult) Also annoying, many people who become experts start thinking they came from the womb with their current level of proficiency.

Unfortunately people don't build their airplanes anymore. They throw money at styrofoam and hope to hinges will hold up
Building airplanes is actually more popular than it's ever been, thanks to the low cost, accessibility, approachability, durability, and repairablilty of foam. Scratch building is gaining popularity for the first time in decades thanks to insulation foam, foamboard, and depron.

ASW 28s, and a Crescendo Evolution before spring.
