As we say in Michigan… It’s not cold. You’re just not dressed warm enough!

Remember to remove your radio from any “muff” after use or it may get water damage from condensation in storage as happened to another tuber.

I was born in northern Manitoba. Living in Ontario now (That's Canada BTW ) and we fly all winter using a frozen river for our runway. Never had a problem with skis under any conditions. The trick is to get the weight of the aircraft toward the rear end of the ski, that keeps the front of the ski up out of the powder. With sufficient power it's easy. My favorite winter plane is an old faithful Sig Astro Hog 6 foot wing with a work horse K&B 61 glow in the front.

Flying on frozen lakes with floats is really fun. And in my experience they have worked in any conditiom we have tried.

A trick I learned from the bike racing world are those nitril inspection gloves emt use. they give the same control as bare hand, but give you some insulation.

Nice video as always! One more advantage... you have the flying field for your own. And be aware of icing. If your plane looses power check your prop. Had this one and it was pretty impressive. Greetings from Switzerland

The biggest challenge with winter flying besides cold fingers is cold breeze making my eyes tear up

I heard snow was coming my way and immediately got my 3d printer going on some skis. By time I got 2 planes outfitted all the snow was gone... was looking forward to blowing some snow around!

heated clothing, thermal undergarmets, keep neck and head warm, drink hot beverages,
I use fingerless gloves and warm up fingers with hand warmers after each flight,
not much snow at our field but it does get cold.
sunny days you get radiant heat from sun and its not as bad,
cloudy days you need more/ better protection,
it the wind is more than 5mph and its cloudy and the temp is below 32 F. I don't fly.
I've not been keeping batteries warm. I need to do that. Thanks for the advice in the video.

5:38 That "density is 10 fold" number isn't right. I pulled out an air density calculator, it's closer to 15%-30% depending on how extreme high/low temps you're comfortable flying. Still quite significant though!
For reference, 15% came from a summer condition of 70F, 1atm, 60% RH and a winter condition of 0F, 1atm, and dry air.
My 30% calculation came from a summer condition of 100F, 1atm and 100%RH, compared to the same winter condition as before.

Snow is also a lot more forgiving to crash into!

  • @Island_Line_Rail_Productions

I fly my EDFs off the frozen lake as in summer there is not a lot of local places that are large enough or clear enough from obsticals to fly. I fly all props (other than my PBY) in my field though and take off from the road. Ice is a great runway when it is smooth. If like me and flying on a large body of water (Lake Champlain) there is really no concern about takeoff or landing distances or even if your battery runs out early. Just land anywhere and walk out to get it

Skis are a little bit of a mystery to me. My DIY pusher plane can almost go vertically, but it just won't get enough ground speed to lift off from a powder type snow. No matter the surface area.

Thanks! We used to have a pond near us that would regularly freeze over and that was a blast to fly from. Unfortunately, the parks department has closed off access to it now.

FYI, the rest of the World also enjoy your Videos and most of the planet uses the Metric system. Might be nice to mention it or at least put onscreen text in Metric. I know you guys are in the conversion process, since the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 👍 😀😀

Fantastic plane. Will eventually break on hard crash due to EPO foam. Easily repairable with hot glue. There's your review.

@@TailHeavyProductions for 13 years I worked in Hotel Maintenance at a Golf/Ski resort here in Michigan. The skier cafeteria showed his films all day on a overhead screen. The bad thing was that I took lunch the same time every day so would see the SAME 39 minutes of his films!
