    Imagine having the brilliant and gorgeous Peter Dinklage at your disposal but, rather than use him as the main dwarf character, you make him a side character and cast a regular size actor as the main dwarf character. I would be really interested to learn the train of thought that led to this genius decision.

      It's bizarre, esp. when they had a pretty good cast of actual dwarf's and one of them is a really good actor, but they put him in that odd sidebar role, as Patricia Arquette's bf. Everything about this movie is bizarre though.

    So... as a little person who was growing up when this movie came out, I'm astonished its existence went totally over my head (see what I did there? laugh damn you), was as star studded as it was - Peter Dinklage was cast BUT NOT AS THE LEAD LP ROLE CMON - and that they worked harder at CGI-ing loafers on Gary Fucking Tallguy Oldman's knees than giving his fake legs knees.
    This movie is brilliant and your review of it amazing.
    Also, "dwarf" has a much stronger connotation to D&D character creation than to little people for me, though like a few commenters here have already said, it's technically the medical term for the condition (dwarfism) and some little people do use it - but most of us prefer our names, or titles like "your fucking majesty"

    Ok so apparently the final cut of the film is not the movie the writer/director wanted to make, but was the result of studio intervention. The director was so ashamed of the studio's cut that he quit filmmaking forever in reaction. I read somewhere that Peter Dinklage said he was proud of the original film. I need to see the director's cut with every fiber of my being.

    So I checked the internet and: “People with dwarfism are people, just like everyone else. They would prefer to be called by their name rather than a label. However, if a term is required, then more commonly accepted ones are: 'person with dwarfism', 'short stature', 'short person' and 'little person'."

    • @bryony1235
      @bryony1235 8 місяців тому +2

      I feel like “little person” is a more offensive term to call someone with dwarfism in the UK because of the connotations in English folklore with fairies, the Borrowers and children.

    There are two sets of twins that I know of where one has dwarfism and the other doesn’t. I have a friend with dwarfism who told me about this movie years ago. He’s an actor too. The only thing that bothered him was the terrible job they did on Gary, and the fact that they didn’t make Peter the twin brother. He wasn’t a huge actor at the time, but they still should have cast the guy with dwarfism as the brother with dwarfism. And btw, I laughed so hard at this video! I mean what the hell is wrong with Kate?! How many times did she need to say the word midgets?! Also, Jaime talking about the end of that weird story and the little girl “could you not? I’m trying to play kick the can” 🤣🤣🤣 Weirdest movie ever!!

    I worked at Blockbuster when this came out. I remember in the early 2000s thinking it was really interesting and thought provoking. In retrospect it's really poorly done. But I think the idea of self acceptance (of one's family and oneself) and bringing a marginalized group of people to the fans of McConaughey and Beckinsale was cool in theory. 20 year old me learned something from it. I definitely hated that Gary Oldman was cast as a little person and then he and Kate hooked up. But I had not known about health issues and how people with dwarfism were treated because I'd never known anyone with dwarfism at the time. And this was before we could Google anything we were curious about. Movies and tv were where we small town folk learned about the bigger world out there. Except my parents and teachers always said "you can't believe everything you see on tv." Definitely love your reaction to this movie. I haven't thought about it in like a decade. I don't really like it as much as I remembered.

    • @MM-jf1me
      @MM-jf1me 8 місяців тому +17

      It reminds me of Shallow Hal, which came out two years prior: both are trying to humanize marginalized groups, but are still products of their time. Think Shallow Hal did a better job of it, though, considering it shows Hal's character progression instead of Tiptoes, where Carol learns people with dwarfism are human (I know, 🙄, but that's the point of the film) and in fact ditches her average sized human to run off with her BIL with dwarfism after her husband freaks out that their child is a little person -- like, what? It feels like a really odd fantasy ending for a little person who's always felt unlucky in love.

      @blameitoncapitalism 8 місяців тому +8

      What you saying makes total sense. This is actually a good idea done POORLY. I think this is the kinda movie that would actually benefit from being remade. Like, imagine a remake of this movie, but well done. First a good casting, with real little people both on the production and the actors. Then a lot more light hearted moments so we'll actually like them and care for them. Good moments of comedy that doesn't rely on ridiculous fart jokes or the weird antics and one liners of supposedly to be funny sidekicks human characters, or worse on the backs of the little peoples body themselves. Also real chemistry between the love triangle in a way that we can actually realize there's a live triangle thing going on. And of course, treating the issues of the condition with seriousness and knowledge, but also naturality and respect. It can't be that hard. "oh but that would be just a whole different movie" no, no but we are gonna keep the same story: a young, sweet, independent from their families, couple faces crisis when the woman gets pregnant, for they now have to face their background and future. She realizes her great guy isn't that perfect when she discovers he is embarrassed and purposely strangered from his family for a health issue they have. BUT, it's a not a simple "nice guy actually bad" typical plot twist, because we get to see that he's not a snob jerk, he does love them a lot, helps them out, and respects them, but we learn that he grew up seeing them go through several difficulties, health issues, societal (like bullying, descrimination, isolation), political (as in laws for accessibility not being passed and such) etc., and he himself had to deal with that world for the entirety of his growing years, so now that's he's grown he just don't wanna deal with that anymore and tried to experiment have a "normal" life apart from the difficulties of social ostracism that he couldn't avoid for being born in his family. Imagine if his best friend as a kid was a cousin, but he died for a dwarfism related reason (like a complication of breathing issued, yes that can happen) and that led him to resent the condition and want to avoid that world? Like.. so he just doesn't want to see his kid going through the same stuff and is genuinely worried. Plus he does enjoys beyond "just a normal guy" and not being singled out and who can blame him after he was the exception his own life, the tall one on his family and the "midget family" one everywhere else? Like ya know real complexity for the character.
      Which is something the female lead could benefit from is she could get some too this time. Cuz in the original movie she seems like just a idea of a good woman, emptyhot, nice lady, instead of a real person. So in our hypothetical movie, let's see the issues she may have with her own family. We see that she is a long big curly haired adult woman in the early 2000s, which means she doesn't fallow trends, only half her hair died blood red and she lives in a garage house in the city away from her family and paints flowers on walls for a living. OK. We get it. She is kinda of an urban hippie, she is artist, she is fun, she is modern. Where's her family though? OK maybe they are very traditional, religious or whatever. Not bad people, but groqujg up they weren't supporting of her interests, respecting her opinions or in agreement of her choices, for careers or relationship. They just wanted the best for her but wouldn't notice she needed to be trusted, heard, accepted and loved instead of controlled. Maybe she is bi, and left when they wouldn't allow her to have a girlfriend, because a women is supposed to being a wife and a mother, mandatorily, in their minds. and now that she did grow up and is about to start a tradicional family (with a husband and kid, I mean) she doesn't want to give them the benefit of the taste, because she know it's gone mean a "I told you so, silly girl" for them, she is still hurt by the years of outcasting and, being "the weird, the wild, the black cheap" one in the family, and she doesn't raise her kid under their influence. She doesn't hate them and knows that they wanted her well, but she doesn't want nothing to do with them as a adult, because the past was painful, she feels like real family is acceptance and love, and that blood tied aren't as important as society makes it out to be, because you can't choose it, you can only randomly be born somewhere, and she knows by experience that blood families can be a source of oppression, suffering and trauma, not necessarily love and support. But, her grandmother who was more accepting and open minded had died of breast cancer and it can be genetic and the baby and his proposal makes her think of her "always dreamt of her wedding day" family. Oh, she should have friends. For some reason female live interests to the lead never have friends. Only, if ever, ya know, that one bitch woman who her guy and we the audience can't stand. Anyway what happens? Same shit, but well. The wedding is being planed, the families meet, they are forced to confront their past. She gets along with his family, better than he deals with overcoming his now elevated fear of getting back to where he was as a kid. She has the genes as well, the baby is little, the father can't actually grew out of his trauma, freaks out, he can't deal. They try for a few months but fatherly life is too demanding and it's not working. One day he say some mean things about her mom cancer and "how is she not afraid?" and admits he didn't even wanted to have a baby in the first place, that why he went to such a modern girl anyway. After that huge fight, they split. In the first two years she lives by her self and takes care of the baby with help of her friends, her chosen family, the way she wanted as a teen, free. He eventually finds a "normal" girl and lives with her and had the same type of relationship with his son he had with the rest of his family. Loves him from afar, helps financially, sees him occasionally, but isn't close. Things are going well but not great for there are resentments between them. Then, it's about time to get the toddler to school, and she ends up needing his family help to, ya know, day to day stuff they actually know all about. Ya know, where are the salted schools, what does he need to have on him, where to buy stuff like clothes that actually fit him, adapted toys etc. So the father's brother end up being very present and offers a lot of help.
      Oh, he is also deeper and better written than the original version. You see, growing up, they did look very much alike, they do look alike, and it was always that the brother was the "normal" version of the protagonist in the family (cuz he was little like everybody else), but the "other" outside of it, because well he was little when nobody else, like in the school or wtv was. They have a bit of a complex relationship but they always got along well and had a lot in common, the same interests, the same tastes, and the same face too, and everyone used to say "X is the tall Y" or "Y is the short Y", "they just like each other, just don't little differece!" it's gotta be a thing that the only thing that separates them is the height. (there's scenes of the brothers arguing about place in the family, place in the world, who even is the normal one, who envies whom, it's about competition, normalcy, responsability, jealously, a bunch of things can be worked in these dynamic between these tow men) So it makes a little more sense when the girl is actually attracted to the brother too, and ya know, over TIME, years after he and her brother split. He had a few long term relationships failed right before the next step and never got to be a parents, which he always wanted. He spends a lot of time with the girl and baby, he is very fatherly and helps out a lot. They end up bonding and they end up together. But it's less creepy in that way.
      Oh. She too have a sister. They too have a complex relationship. The sis was the perfect one in the family. Though, looked and behaved just like the family wanted her to, unlike her too curious, too argumentative, too disobedient older sister. Somewhere along the line, her sister (who was perfectly nice btw, and she shunned and dismissed by her not the other way around) gets back in her life because the toddler had a accident and they needed blood transplant - we all know where it's going to. Girl lead needs to receive this slap in her face to realize blood family is important and can be a source of healing too, not only of hurt. In another moment, sis shows up to her door - she too is divorcing her husband. He cheated. And her family is not supporting the decision. But the weird sister takes her in and supports her. So they mend their relationship. She's not completely traditional, but she has some of it, and she's happy and healthy. Now she has both part of her chosen family and born family in her life. The brother has a family of his own and got over his feelings of inferiority with his brother. The only one who's not completely happy, is the one who couldn't really deal with his issued and chose to run away from them. He's fine, but still hurt, and it shows. We don't hate him, we understand he deserved some peace, he's got a nice girl too, but he lost a great family out of fear. he is a cautionary tale. The little family didn't need to learn nothing, there were great the way they were.

    I've heard of this movie for YEARS! But nobody has ever been able to get ahold of it because it was not released. I wanted to see it sooo badly. I can't believe u can actually watch it now!
    Edit: I heard in a forum in the early 00's that the original script was amazing. That only AFTER the editing process, and reshoots did it become this monstrosity. Annnd THAT was why the director make them put in the pen name. 😂

      I wish we could get access to Bright’s cut. Dinklage said it was actually good and the final product was “ruined.”

    Seeing as Peter and Matthew are pretty much the same age it would have made more sense for Peter to play the brother. Why didn't they just do that??

      This was well before Game of Thrones, before Elf even. I guess they thought they needed a big name to draw in audiences and at the time Hollywood was wanking itself silly with parts for major actors to "transform" themselves, something eventually parodied in Tropic Thunder.

      And honestly, I would definitely believe Peter Dinklage as his twin brother (for movie purposes)

      IKR, just make Matthews hair dark and let it roll. Would have made the movie so much better
