I’m a 68 year old man I was in Hammersmith Oden this night I was 29 back then it was 1983 of all the hundreds of concerts I’ve attended this will always be in my top five.
This is as good as it gets trust me.

They captured the rise and fall of a town, the sweat and tears put into it, the lives lived, the loves lost, and those that made it out. In one song.
This song is just an ovrrlooked Gem. Sooo cool you took time to react to this cult favorite. It is ridiculous how good this compilstion is. Rock and roll on another level. Mark Knopfler is a special talent for sure.
"Tunnel of Love" from the same perfomance is another Masterpiece. The intro is simply wonderful. It´s mind-blowing like "Sultans of Swing" and "Telegraph Road"

The song and the performance is epic. They take you on a journey. It would be hard not to appreciate each of the musicians. They each stand out and complement each other. Each one telling a part of the story. ETA we all love Mark's shitass grin! And can you imagine the sound in that concert hall.

He makes the cosmos better and even serious or sad songs still leave you uplifted and happy. Incredible
So many great performances by them. Brothers In Arms Falkland Islands video always brings a tear to my eye, and I absolutely love Single Handed Sailor.
Onyin you've got some real soul girl I think dire straits are one of the greatest rock bands ever man the way they jell together they are so tight and professional and mark knoffeler is an absolutely superb guitarist and lyric writer love your reaction keep on rockin
This band overall, especially this song, make great listening for a long drive across a wide open space such as the desert. I repeated this all the way to Mexico and back.

Thanks for reviewing this amazing song. It's my favorite dire straits song ever. There is so much variety as far as texture, tempo and dynamics throughout. It may be a rock song, but it is rather symphonic.

As I said with that reaction, I was there when it was filmed in 1983!
This was the song we thought they might not play so well because it is such an epic piece, they smashed it!
Alan Clark was outstanding on the piano, Mark, well its Mark, so its going to be good, we knew Hal Lindes on the other guitar and John Illsley on the bass were good. The great unexpected was Terry Williams on the drums, superb.
This is a great piece, to see it live was a privilege you don't appreciate at the time.

Loved your reaction to this. Mark has a unique styleof playing. Rather than using a pick he uses finger picking rather like a blues player.
To really see his talent I suggest to listen to a song Tunnel of Love suggested by another poster. In my opinion the best version on You Tube is the version recorded in Sydney Australia in 1985. The dong recalls him growing up in the North East of England. There's a nearby seaside resort called Whitley Bay which has a fun fair called The Spanish City. All mentioned in the song. There's a section in the video where they do a close up of his fingers on the fretboard. It's mesmerising!
Support guitarist on that tour was an American Guitarist Jack Sonni who is a flamboyant character.
Mark has done a number of performances with well known guitarists Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins and others. There's a You Tube video of Mark and Chet doing a number Poor Boy Blues which has a steel guitar. You should check that out.

Onyin, as I pointed out in my comment under your reaction to Dire Straits's 'Sultans of Swing' (live) video, this version of 'Telegraph Road', as good as it is, is inferior to the studio version. The sound is much clearer in that version and that brings out Mark's guitar playing much more.

(1) and (3) are studio versions and are much better than any live version of the same songs I have ever heard (and that includes the live version of (1) on the Alchemy CD). Be careful with (3) since there is an edited version of this song that most reactors on UA-cam end up reviewing, which is vastly inferior to the one to which I have linked.
(2) is live and is the best version of this song I know of.
By the way, their name is pronounced Die-er Straits, and the word "Die-er" rhymes with "fire", "higher" and "wire".
Almost every song on Brothers in Arms is a masterpiece. The radio hits could be cut and the album would be perfect.
@@bryanbrady877 I agree -- I just happen to think the studio version of 'Telegraph Road' as the best version of that song.
@@RosaLichtenstein01 That's the one that I accidentally left in my truck. The guy I sold the truck to (my best friend's brother) didn't pay but when I got the (no longer running) truck back, Telegraph Road and Bad Religion Tested were gone.
