What is a Land Acknowledgement and why is it important?
A Land Acknowledgement is a statement provided at the commencement of events, conferences or presentations that recognizes the traditional territories of Indigenous peoples. Expressing a land acknowledgement at the beginning of an event or meeting gives time for reflection and demonstrates respect for Indigenous lands, treaties and peoples.
Land acknowledgements are an important step in the journey toward healing as they encourage thinking about what happened in the past and what changes can be made going forward to further reconciliation.
