In 1540 Hernando de Soto met the Siouan in western North Carolina; fifty years later the Cherokee came in and took the Siouan's land. My people lost their land to the Vikings that invaded Scotland. Tell me, how far do we go back in time to fix things?

"Guest on their homeland" Did the Ohlone and Duwamish people pay a "voluntary tax" on the land they took from the previous owners? Or did they take it by force like everyone else ever?
There's no historical indication either of those groups fought for their land (in particularly the Duwamish), do you have an historical record saying they took the land?

There were three waves of "Indigenous peoples" over a span of 15000 years....so, who are the "original"? And does it matter? And what is the cut off point to be "indigenous"? And just in case you missed it....they are NOT indigenous if they migrated FFS.
These uncomfortable facts must be ignored, or it will jeopardize the position of "You owe us."

I totally agree that what happened in the past is terrible and I also agree that we should be treating the land as a relative. I have concerns about what Land Back, or unsettling, looks like scaled up because these ideas don't seem well thought through. Are we talking about a slow migration through attrition of non-indigenous out of North America? This leads me to a point of disagreement: that this is the only way to protect the earth. Seems like a better solution is one that involves all of us, not just a special collection of cultures and peoples. With that said, might there be a way for non-indigenous people to join in land stewardship instead of simply leaving?
Yeah, I wish there were more solutions presented that were fundamentally inclusive. I'm incapable of paying land taxes and I don't believe I owe my property to indigenous people because colonists took it away. I'm not responsible for that, but I would like to help these efforts. Obviously pipelines are necessary for efficient logistics, but are there safer alternatives? I hope in the future we can be more inclusive.
Bottom line is we can only learn from past mistakes and do better in the future. Makes no sense to punish the people alive today who had absolutely nothing to do with these past atrocities 🤔

No, because while our people were being literally scalped to death on bounty, Asians, Hispanics and Blacks were free to mine for gold in the west on our land. Inclusivity is just another excuse to not hand over the land to its rightful owners. Go research, Native Americans were in hiding while Asians, Hispanics and Blacks were free (with discrimination) to roam the west. Just like Native Americans should never interject themselves into talks about Black Slavery Reparations, I hope other races give us that same right. Every other race has its own lands. The whites (Hispanics) - Europe. The Asians - Asia. The Blacks - Africa. I don’t think we ask for much by simply asking for the National Forests to be handed to us.

Yes, regular people make no use of the resources "the rich" uncover and put into products and services. We all just sit on dirt and eat what we hunt and gather between songs and dance.
While some of these groups are doing great, it's absurd to pretend that only natives restore lands, and certainly not that natives make no use of modern life.

I have a property in Portland, OR. I want to LandBack to the tribe that was here, the Multnomah, but they are gone. There’s like 20-40 families left and they are part of Warm Springs. There is no Multnomah tribe left.

It going, alot of the crappier reservations may become to be obsolete and left behind as said tribes on their reservations have access to their original homelands again but it’s too large of a situation to say. In short it would be a huge internal geopolitical reorganization within North America and beyond.
Just Greenland alone gaining independence from Denmark woild make it the first Native American controlled country on earth.
Good point. I've watched several videos on the landback concept and none them gave even a 10000 foot description on how it would actually work. I think giving some land might be feasible, but it would have to be done in an inclusive way that recognizes that "colonizing" people who have lived here for generations have a relationship with the land too. I get the sense that a lot of these guys just want all the white people to disappear.

im a white person who lives in MN, and I think the Land Back movement is a great idea that should be considered much more than it is. We're in a climate crisis induced by greed, if there could be leadership that actually cared about the land and our future as a society, i welcome them with open arms.

Actually, I'm sitting in Slab City. Most people write myths about this property. Reality is this partial of land was once reservation. It was cut to pieces in the late 1800's Native Land grab. Reservation land, that means land that was pretty worthless that was "given" to indigenous people so we could steal the rest of the better land. As a bonus, we made laws and took more land. If people really looked into where this land came from, they might see Slab City is just taking back what was stolen in the first place.
I think a lot of people have a hard time with the concept of land back because we are a culture obsessed with ownership and possessing things. We don't really own anything, we all die and borrow the world from the next generations. The people who decided genocide was a good idea are also profiting massively from killing the planet and making everyone more poor besides a select few. Practicing capitalism the way we do is toxic and we don't keep a good relationship with the earth. We see everything as a usable resource. There's a large disconnect. Instead of defending why all cultures of the past have practiced genocide, why don't we make a better future knowing that's not how we should progress. Learning to give back is common if you take!
Vine Deloria Jr. has a good theory about the temporal vs. spatial. Christianity is more set in when things happened rather than where they happened, this treatment of the Bible gave way to a conquest frame of mind to spread the word of God, since God was seen as universal no matter where you came from. Indigenous perspectives treat the immediate phenomenological frame of reference as God. The 360 degree perspective of a human being is considered holy, therefore there is no need to spread a message of God, because God encompasses everyone's experience. Certain spatial experiences are considered holy as dictated by creation stories, where you can physically observe where the stories were located. These concepts of spatial vs. temporal metaphysical theories have caused rifts between the two cultures, which has clearly left indigenous nations feeling unheard and partronized.
I'm part Cherokee, among others. Mixed race. Natives practice "right by conquest" long before Europeans came to modern America. Lands conquered became hunting lands, women taken as wives, tribal members of opposing forces as slaves, and animals become the conquerors livestock. American conquerors are among the few in the world to defeat and then set aside self governing lands to those who've lost. Among the many problems with land back is that those of us who still respect "right by conquest" are now assimilated. Every male in my family has served in the US military. We are born with inherent rights, but also under certain laws. To disavow those laws is to deny them all, meaning, I can also just come take your land, or any reservation, if I choose to. Be careful you don't get what you ask for. Also, there are so many unplanned and unaddressed questions... Who do we turn over our land to? The tribal governments who were 99% male and women were property? How about the millions of products and jobs European conquerors turned capitalists have built? Do you/we then owe them for the use and profit of such products?

My husband and I don't have kids, and we don't think his sisters want our farm. We were looking to leave it to a land trust, but instead, we're going to do this. He's part Kanien'kehá:ka, and though I'm white and Jewish, I have always been very sympathetic to indigenous people. I truly love these people. To be part of Land Back would be a great honor.

I'm not saying it's right, but powerful civilizations have ALWAYS taken land from those weaker than them. Your argument, if taken seriously, would probably go back so far that it would be impossible to do. Not to mention impractical. I'm sure there are tons of examples of indigenous people taking, violently by the way, land from weaker peoples. What then? I don't own land, but if I did I think voluntarily paying tax and getting rid of it when I died instead of passing it on to my relatives would probably be the last thing on my mind. Even if it wasn't originally my land, that doesn't change the fact that I paid for it. Is somebody going to reimburse me for that?

We see examples of where it leads to if someone wants to go back in time to some convenient, random point in Ukraine at the moment. You could argue for decades over Israel and Palistine, or launch rockets at each other like it's actually done. We will see a lot of conflicts on this with climate change, if we don't let go. The good news is: it gets more comfortable on earth with moving to a human accelerated warm period. Not like some confused people spread a risk of extinction, that would be a cold period, e.g. caused by a supervulcano eruption. The bad news: It will get more comfortable in different places than today and someone always already claims those places. As that's inevitable, we might just want to start thinking differently about "land ownership". Typically, regular people owning land worked and paid hard for it, still pay taxes. They couldn't and shouldn't care less about the ancient history of that place, there won't be any without ownership changes by war, theft, murder, etc. Also not under indigenous tribes. If we don't draw a line on those discussions, those will kill us. Like the Russians exercising their perceived right to Ukraine and more by nuclear force. Would that make everybody happy?
@@BlueSideUp land has always changed hands through any number of means. This ladies argument goes nowhere because there was always a group before any one group took the land. Question - what if I want to join a native group?
I believe you can present any genealogical evidence to the tribe(s) you're descended from and ask them what your options are. NPR did a segment on this a while back.

If you're looking for *membership* in one or more tribes, you would naturally need to be descended from one of those tribal members.
You can "help" without "joining. Those are two different questions.

To "make it right" is impossible without erasing every trace of our existence, or do you only want to make it "sort of right"?
I think a big part of "living in harmony with the land" is simply a result of lacking the level of technology to cause an impact.
@@leveljoe I'm sorry but Indigenous peoples simply do not have the same kind of relationship to the land that others do ... the European philosophy has increasingly become very commercial-driven and capitalistic due to the industrial revolution, and even before then, the Earth was being bleed dry because it was seen as a resource. I mean, a huge reason colonies were established were because of the immense amount of resources that could be transported back to Europe; this was a financial thing. Obviously, Indigenous people aren't gods who bless the Earth just by walking on it, but you cannot argue that they impacted the land in the same way that it was post-colonisation. It's not even on the same level

Not true, My ancestors lost our land to English and Germans. They bought large portions of land with Axe, salt and tobacco. Today, we cannot get our land back. Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬

Someone paid them for it, now you consider it was not fair but it's not fault of current owner. Here she was describing situation of stealing land by force. To me, your case is not really applicable

The main reason that so many look at LandBack as weird is not because it is impossible. Land has been and continues to be given back to Indigenous nations, but in small quantities. The real reason is because colonialism has been so throughly normalized to the point some folks forget Indigenous peoples even exist.
But they do exist, and the Americas are theirs.
There's already historical evidence that there were people living here before the "native Americans" so it doesn't belong to them either.
They benefit from colonialism every day. If they want to live primitive that might make sense. But literally colonialism is the whole reason. We enjoy warm houses with plumbing and electricity cant have it both ways

The ONLY land that has EVER been given back to any tribe is Blue Lake, returned to Taos Pueblo by Nixon. ALL other acquisitions were purchases taken into trust (or fee simple in the Pueblos’ case)
@elimartinez7704 colonialism brought technology of the time, and continued to... here in Canada reserves have or are supposed to have plumbing and electricity, paid for by the government of Canada, so taxpayers.
I agree that what happened hundreds of years ago was a terrible thing and I'm not trying to belittle how the land has suffered, but I'm not sure exactly you want people now to do about it. We can't change the past. No one alive today is responsible for what happened in the past and no one alive today suffered the atrocities of those past events. I was born in this country and have lived here my entire life, that makes me a native of this land, regardless of where my ancestors in the distant past originally came from. You say I should give back to you what isn't mine to give and what never actually belonged to you either. If you go back far enough, the original tribal people of this land were not the original "owners" of the land either. your ancestors migrated here just as mine did. Land doesn't belong to anyone, but it belongs to everyone. Instead of trying to guilt people into giving back something they never "stole", let's work toward sharing the land together. If you feel that others don't know how to treat the land, work towards teaching them instead of placing blame and trying to guilt them for something they had nothing to do with. This isn't YOUR land, it's OUR land, as in all of us. We are all part of the same world and it doesn't matter where we all come from or who was here first. We are all here now. Leave the past where it belongs and let's all work on what we can do now to make the world better moving towards the future for everyone. The world is in such turmoil enough as it is, we need to get passed this kind of thinking that we are somehow separate and start coming together in unity. If we can't do that, the world and everything in it will continue to suffer.
There was no guilting involved in this presentation. If you feel guilt in response to what she said that is more of a reflection of how you feel about this. Maybe that is a call for you to address why you feel guilty and face your own truth? History is always important and the only reason you would want to hide it is if you benefit from its erasure. She never said once you need to leave the land you are on, and it seems like you are projecting a lot onto this wonderful presenter, who is an expert on what she is talking about! Take a breath, tend to your own emotions, and let indigenous peoples guide us into harmony with the land.
You say all of this as if there aren’t pit mines placed SPECIFICALLY near indigenous lands to poison their water. You say this as if we haven’t created forced famines. You say this as if the last boarding school closed long before 1983.
Yeah, the Crusades happened 5000 years ago and the land “belonged” to them too….
We tried feudalism and bloodline-based inheritance for thousands of years.
Our current system is imperfect, but it's better than giving land to people based on genetics.

We can own and show dominion over our surroundings because we exist. Society has well established guidelines for this.

@@tuitaco depending on how you define colonial powers and indigenous people, I think most analysts would say that there are very few places where indigenous people did not recover their land. The Americas and Oceania are main exceptions.
And the main reason the Europeans were able to definitively take over that land was simply that they had immunity to smallpox and other terrible diseases.

I bought my land from the government, who bought it from someone else. Maybe at one time this plot belonged to some natives but whom did they steal it from? Native or not, we're all vicious humans. But I didn't take it, and now it's mine. And that's okay.

The government took the land from the natives after promising it to them in treaties. Then it gave free land to white people (while specifically excluding indigenous people from being able to acquire homestead land) and did not pay the indigenous people for it. What do you call that if not a taking deserving of compensation? How can it be a conquest if they were already within our borders by treaty?

Indigenous means born into. All humans are indigenous to some locality. Land is not born and so is not indigenous. The word you seem to be looking for is aboriginal ('original inhabitants'), but land is not that either. Land does not belong to anyone, but any organisms can and certainly do pretend to possess it.

Some natives, indigenous people, Indians, have a movement to "take back" our public lands. That is our national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, and the vast BLM lands. They say they once lived there.
This is slightly true, but mostly they lived where there are towns and cities today. That's because what are now national or state public lands were much less desireable. This movenent's goals are based on a cowboy movie myth of the past, and it is divisive and undesirable.
