I've been hoping for a video like this since getting more into comic collecting. Now I'm not color blind and know exactly what I'm looking at when I see the various CGC labels. Thanks for this.
Seems like many people don't know that CBCS authenticates their signatures with Beckett. Anyone who is used to grading trading cards knows PSA and Beckett as well as knows that anything graded as Gem Mint by Beckett really deserves the grade and they're no slouches when it comes to verifying signatures. Sure it's great that CGC doesn't authenticate signatures , they only witness them because they have no means to authenticate those signatures. CBCS totally blows them out of the water when it comes to that. If I ever came into the clutches of a pedigree collection with comics signed by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko I'd go with CBCS 100 percent. No un-witnessed signed comic should ever be sent to CGC. They can't get the job done when it comes to grading the book and giving signatures the authentication they deserve to have.
@El-ahrairah I'm sure they are not perfect but you as a collector also have to do your own work and kind of verify those signatures yourself also. Some signatures are easier to forge than others. A lot of people also don't trust CGC. They get grades wrong sometimes as well or will miss the mark from grader to grader and there are lots of people that hate their strong arm in the grading scene. So if you want to point out negatives something negative could be found pretty much about all of these grading companies. As long term collectors, assuming you are as well, you or I could grade and authenticate our own collections more than likely. I'm pretty sure most of us become pretty familiar with the signatures of our favorite artists or whatever. Only reason to send stuff for grading and signature authentication is to increase a collectibles value to be sold or just cause you like the cool cases and bragging rights for cool grades. You can count me in on all 3 of those but certain things I slab for different reasons. If I want to slab a comic that was signed without a witness I'm still going cbcs.
Just as an example I brought a Secret Wars 8 with me to a con to get signed and witnessed by CGC. The comic was like VF condition, never pressed it or anything and it came back with a 9.6 as well as another spidey comic I sent that was no wear near mint coming back as a 9.2. CGC gets things wrong all the time lol. Those 2 grades in particular you won't hear me complain about though. Are they bumping up grades for people who pay for the cgc witness? Who knows. Maybe I just got lucky. Or maybe I'm just more strict of a grader that the grader who handled my books at CGC.
As someone who is new to all this, i dont understand how its acceptable to collectors that cgc will not authenticate or credit a signature that they didn't witness. If i write my name on the cover of spiderman 300 and have it graded, it shouldnt be graded the same as a copy that was signed by mcfarlane.
@El-ahrairah with how well known they are i would assume they can afford to hire a full time reputable employee to authenticate the signatures. And i just looked up completed listings on ebay. A Spawn 300 on Ebay graded at 9.8 sold for 80 dollars, the same 9.8 autographed by Mcfarlane sold for 179.99 so im not sure I believe that autographs add no value.
Recently won a 1990 spider man 1 Torment platinum but was me er resale too into collecting but your channel has made me understand the grading process pretty well
idk if this helps but ive been into grading trading cards for the past few years and have always loved comics so i decided to start learning, ur kids are so good for beginners im learning a lot, very fast. lets gooooooooo good shit
Thank you soooooooo much for this video, man. This is the real help I needed and now I know what to expect with what comics I have. Happy subscriber over here!
Thanks for enlightening me on the labels. I've never paid attention to that. I have a few good comics but never looked into getting them graded. Might get started on that! Thanks Gem! Very informative!
Hey gem a really great video keep them up and coming I have a question can you tell me the deffernt ages if the books rather if it's a silver gold bronze copper or mondern any help would be greatful thanks your friend Jon Daniels and thanks
Just found your channel, subbed and liked! Just dusted off my collection and have so many questions, this video helped. Now, what about the end of the video where you mentioned pressing 🤔 🤔 lol Thanks for the content!
Any way you could get more in-depth or point me to a site to explain the varieties of "restored"? I'm looking at a book that reads, "Slight B-1", while the one you feature reads, "Apparent B-3".
Another information filled video, I’ve never dipped in CGC books but you’re giving the knowledge I need to consider doing that 😁 If I were to submit a book I have an Ultimate Spider-Man #1 and I would guess the grade of it would be between maybe 9.2 - 9.6. I hope higher but even if it’s a 9.0 that be okay 😁 Thank you Gem 💎 for another awesome video
I been watching your videos and you definitely got the knowledge, but there is a wizard first cgc label that's red and modern, saw it on a wolverine comic and you can actually Google it
Thanks for the video Gem..very helpful for us who are just getting into comics. Can you touch on cover variants and exclusives. For instance I see some cool looking cover variants on a website that supposedly has "exclusives" made for their website. Are these legit? Do they work in partnership with the manufacturer of the comics or just slap on their artist created cover to these comics?
Great Video Gem! I wonder if you could back this up with the same premise for other providers that off grading and slab formats. I know you posted a video of boxing comics, but perhaps a video with how to send a single comic to CGC. I imagine most ppl would be really anxious about sending keys to get signed if they arrive at CGC a complete mess - I’m in Australia and these guys don’t attend cons here and I would be hesitant to have absolute faith in sending books unless I was 100% confident , which as a person who has never attempted it, I wouldn’t be. Also I can’t see the join button - is this only for USA UA-cam users? Thanks and keep it minty fresh - Peace
Curious about your thoughts that I don't see eye to eye about CGC labeling. Some ASM 361 have the 'Printer cuts' at the bottom of the front cover. While CGC cannot label these anything higher than 9.8, they still label it as a Universal grade. Ok, I'm actually fine with that because it was made that way during printing before it even reached the customer. However, I've noticed that a few rare comics that had the embossed or foiled covers missing from their cover during printing and then reached the customer. CGC grades these as a Green qualified grade. BOTH examples were literally made that way during printing. But one of the examples gets treated with a Green label. Is this inconsistency?
i actually have a video about that...like how the Spawn 1 misprint gets a green label but the venom 1 black error gets blue...i disagree with CGC there
Max Kernfeld he’s taking the day off mate, or Mr. Reaper could say, “ G’day Gembo, what’s crackin’ there, mate?????!!!!! Ya ever been to the country of France before???!!!!! 🇫🇷 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷”
So let me see if I understand this correctly: If I've been getting books signed since I started attending conventions, LONG BEFORE the advent of CGC, because a CGC witness was not there to witness the signature that book is worth less when graded. Makes total sense.
What about things like the marvel digital download coupons within the book? Does it affect the CGC grade if it's missing, partially peeled, vs. fully intact?
Comic fam I have a question for you my mentor I have a kingdom black one shot black panther number one and I want to get this would this be a good idea I'm skeptical but since I'm retired I'm going to go
Hi I need some advice I just received the most expensive CGC 9.8 comic book I ever purchased and the top part where you can see the label (ie issue name and grade from top view) the paper label is projecting out of the slab and I can fit my finger nail into the part from the top. I want to find out if the book itself is still steal and safe. See I do not live in the USA and spent six days pay on buying the item on ebay then two days pay to ship it to my country so I am worried that it may not be air tight. Thing is I purchased it from My Comic Shop which is supposed to be a good source and I can not send it back because it may cost up to ten days pay to ship out of my country.
Ive only got 3 slabbed, all in the og label. I thought Ultimate Spider-Man #1 White Cover variant @ 9.8 was gonna be worth a fortune but then they killed the Ultimate line, probably worth nothing now 😂
Hi Gem. Compliments to you and your family for the new year. Lets hope that it's a good and safe one. Is there a website I can use as a reference so I do not get rip off by suppliers when buying CGCs? Shout out from South Africa.
If I have a yellow label, the 9 grade means that the comic is a 9 grade and is a real firm? Or that the firm is a 9 grade and they don't authentic the comic?
Cgc is so expensive though. I can't even view notes on my book, let alone the census you were talking about, without paying them money first. I just went to their website to look up a couple books I bought and they don't give you very much information unless you pay
Very informative info, thanks for putting this together. Basically only knew about blue and yellow labels, it was helpful getting the breakdowns on the other colored labels. Does DC have any gimmick labels, if not do you think they will eventually do some for DC?

Hey gem, I have a xmen #1 that I bought at sdcc like 15 years ago. I paid $800 for the book and thought I had got a good deal. I then got it signed by Stan lee and cgc signature series slabbed it. @@GemMintCollectibles I have a batman #89 punchline error where the Designer is blackened out and it affects another page where Punchline is. I'm afraid to send it in if it's going to get the green label of death because of it. I saw another on ebay and it had the green label of death.
CGC or CBCS... Is one preferred over the other? Or more accurate? Everyone has heard stories about people getting books regraded and they come back at a different grade.
Thanks! Great video. I have to commend you for using graphics to show what you are talking about. I do videos for a living and I know how time consuming simple graphics can be. So thank you for taking the time to edit these videos the way you do. I have a Hulk 181 that I'd say is between a 6 - 5 but I had it signed by Lein the day I found it and it's missing the value stamp! So I'm afraid of getting it slabbed cuz I know I'll get the green label. I FEEL like it will devalue the book and I love it too much to get a green label on it. Am I being silly? I really want to get it slabbed to protect it but dat green label though!!!! =(
@@GemMintCollectibles Yup!!! It's in Mylar, then slipped into a Top Loader and it sits in a metal mini filing cabinet drawer! I take it out once a week to admire! XD

yea it would get green for missing the stamp and the unwitnessed sig. Still awesome to own though! put it in mylar!
@@GemMintCollectibles Yup!!! It's in Mylar, then slipped into a Top Loader and it sits in a metal mini filing cabinet drawer! I take it out once a week to admire! XD
