    Summary of allowable defects 25:00
    Remember: A CGC 9.8 is a "nearly perfect collectible with negligible signs of manufacturing or handling defects."
    This video is all about what defects CGC will allow and still award the grade of 9.8. It’s important to note that CGC has not published it’s grading criteria anywhere. Any information about this out there is strictly anecdotal from collectors that have hand on experience through often many PAINFUL submissions. So the information in this video is from my personal experience, because as you can see, I have A LOT of CGC 9.8 slabs, I’ve done A LOT of CGC submissions myself and I’ve bought a lot of 9.8’s over the years so I have a really good idea of what CGC will consistently allow in a 9.8. So the books that we’re going to look at are books that I’ve submitted with a prescreen, books I’ve submitted without a prescreen, books I’ve bought from other people, books from across many different submissions, books that were submitted a few months ago, and books that were submitted years ago. The reason I mention this, and the reason it’s important is that these aren’t just defects that passed in a single submission where CGC was having an off day. That still wouldn’t really make sense because 3 people evaluate the book before it gets its final grade. But nonetheless, these are from submissions over a span of years so that we know it is consistent, reliable data. In order for a defect to make it onto my list of an “allowable defect in a 9.8” I’m going to need to see at least 5 examples from books in at least 2 different submissions.

    This was excellent. I learned so much about grading in this 1 recording than in the last 10 years. I didn't completely understand how cgc determined a book is a 9.8 'til now. Thanks for putting this one out.

    You took good time and care on the details, which is commendable. I used to submit sports cards to PSA, SGC, and BGS decades ago. You are correct on declaring the subjectivity of the process. It does come down to the persons grading the item. I have a few 70's issues I plan on submitting to CGC, but simply for keeping in my personal collection. I'm gladly subbing to your channel. Please do continue to focus on the truths of the industry...and the fun it does bring to you and us.

    I still feel there’s some inconsistency with the grading. I’ve sent in books that get 9.2, 9.4 and 9.6 with what you’ve shown as 9.8s. Looking at the graders notes, there was hardly anything letting me know why this received the grades they got. So it’s really hard to understand what’s correct and what’s not.

    Great video the two defects that I personally don't consider ever achieving a 9.8 is multiple spine ticks/color break and color Rub I consider those a 9.6 or lower, if I'm paying a lot of money to get that 9.8 book I always buy from someone on eBay that allows returns as if I get a 9.8 book that I paid 200, $300 or more for and it has either those defects I'm returning the book I don't consider it personally a 9.8 on the flipside I've gotten a lot of 9.8 books that are virtually Flawless and should be higher grades so at the end of the day there's low 9.8 grades and high 9.8 grades it's all what you're comfortable with what you collect if you're a 9.8 collector. Another great note a lot of books that were graded pre-2008 9.4 and 9.6 we're graded very strict back in the day I actually purchased some I've seen in person at conventions and have cracked open resubmitted and got it back graded 9.8

    This was very helpful for finding key back issues on eBay. I always ask for plenty of pictures that cover the whole comic book. I don't just settle for auction photos already uploaded, per your advice from another video. I'd rather pay the 9.8 slab than get a raw copy and throw money away. But now, I know what to look for. I've always passed on copies with that spine color rub, but now I know that it is negligible. Although I've seen 9.6 slabs that I swear looked like a 9.8. Given it doesn't have interior issues, I wonder why the "judgement" of the book can differ so much with a 9.8 that can look like a 9.4.

  • @spinnerrackstudios
    @spinnerrackstudios 4 роки тому +1

    Interesting video. The color rubs you showed at the end of the video are unacceptable at 9.8 in my opinion. I have 9.6's that befuddle me as to why they are not 9.8's and vice versa. Quite honestly, why people chase 9.8's and pay exorbitant prices for them is beyond me, because the difference between a 9.8 and 9.6 is so negligible that it borders on silliness, especially when considering the inherent subjectivity of grading.

    I feel better now about my spine rub books. I was noticing it a lot with DC comics that I’ve been reading from 2010 (yeah I’m a little behind in my reading) especially with card stock covers. Now I won’t feel so sad - it was starting to bother me even knowing that I would never submit these filler books for grading.

    Great video, but still have a question: Would tiny scuffs at top and bottom of spine be considered bindery tear? Anybody here get a CGC 9.8 with this issue/defect?

    Great video and shows up clear on camera. Question, were these books sent for ccs pressing? My general sense was if sent for ccs pressing they would be more generous with flaws then if just sent in like that straight. Maybe thats not the case?

      The graders wouldn’t know if it was pressed by ccs or not...but no none of these were pressed by ccs

    Great video. I was wondering why my UF4 had a 9.8 when it had a color rub... So it's a negligible defect. I have wizard world young avengers #1 cgc 9.5 and that book is flawless like no handling or manufacturing defect, looks like a Gem Mint to me.
