@shipwrecksunday Fantastic editing, by the way. You are improving the quality of the transitions and especially with the nuggets of information of related vessels. Although Lucy always captures my heart, her sister deserves every bit of recognition. Her and Olympic were lady bros there in the end. Shame it was under such circumstances. Anyway, well done Elinor! Question: If you're a Lady Mary fan, is Our Commodore a Lucy one?
Lovely video... two corrections: Mauretania would be her "younger" sister since she is larger than Lusitania, and I think you switched them with the description of the cowl vents.. Lusitania had those troublesome can like vents while Mauretania had the forest of cowl vents that became her trademark for advertising and photos..
Another great job again 😊 Like I mentioned before, something about that dazzle paint scheme on Mauritania! Funny thing about the Lusitania, Mauritania, & Aquitania being 4 functional funnels, when just a short time later the Titanic's fourth funnel was just for show.
Well done Elinor. Your affection for the ship came thru. If you scripted this it’s one of your best. I believe ships are more than just machines as well. It is sad when they are scrapped.
Thanks so much! It is scripted so I appreciate that! I agree with you - I felt particularly sad with the scrapping of Mauretania. It's just a shame these beautiful ships have to go to waste. I agree with FDR!
@@shipwrecksunday it’s great City and a good place to start a cruise. If I was actually allowed to properly work I would’ve joined the museum years ago when I moved down here. They don’t like Merchant Marines doing what they do best, thanks to insurance! Im blessed railroad museums turn their head!
I have 2 books about 'Mauretania' and 'Lusitania' reproduced from commemorative issues of 'Engineering' by Mark Warren. I consider them crown jewels of the books I have.
Finally got SOME Wi Fi! Pity she (and Olympic) didn`t survive JUST a few more years to serve alongside Aquitania in WWII - now THAT would`ve been Memorable sight.
Great video cant wait to see more.......though i think this Mauritania is far more popular that the 1938 Mauritania ( took me years of being a Ocean liner fanatic to find out there was a second Mauritania
Dazzle Paint: Yes, makes it difficult to determine heading but also when looking at the ship thru a range finder on a Navy Ship to calculate distance to target, in order to focus the range finder, you have to 'line-up" the view of the ship's main deck. Once the main deck of the target is aligned, you calculate the range for your firing solution. The dazzle confuses the eye making it difficult to determine alignment at distance, especially through haze, sea-spray, your ship is rolling, target ship is rolling, etc. I've looked thru an old pre-radar range finder and dazzle makes targeting problematic. Submarines, however, use different method for targeting and that's where dazzle really helps but not 100%. Submarines usually got closer to their intended target.
The Windsor building was demolished in 1987, by which time the panelling and fittings appear to have been carefully stripped, though where they ended up is unknown.
Because I am concerned about the future of SS United States and because I did manage a high end hotel for 8 1/2 years, I am intrigued about your closing musing of "What if the Mauretania was turned into a museum ship or hotel?" With that said, I know that end is closer to what most people think of Queen Mary's viability. Although the QM is in a very touristy area, it is the dingy, short, poorly clothed step sister compared to the hundreds of interesting tourist attractions in the southern California. By comparison, the hotel I managed is now 64 years old and kept in operation because of the business principle of location, location and location as it is adjacent to an intersection where three highways come together. So, suppose the QM or SS United States was moored in the Houston/Galveston area? It would be the star attraction. Houston has a world class museum district and world class medical center. Beyond that, not much else. NASA is in between the two cities, but they shoot the rockets off in Florida. Galveston has several interesting conventions a year, nice beaches and a minor theme park. So, the people that hold the strings for the SS United States have a dream of mooring the ship in New York City. This is a bad idea as NYC and the entire northeast have a terrible business climate with way too many regulations, way too many unions and way too many greedy officials that want their pockets lined. So, I have a dream, as Martin Luther King said, of bringing either ship to Texas. I buy lottery tickets and dream.
It's true - location can change so much! Houston would be a great area to put SS United States! I appreciate your perspective, friend - thanks so much!

Her and the Aqua are my favorite Cunard built ships. The Lizzy and M2 is my close second!
All four of those ships are amazing! Aquitania has one of longest careers I've ever covered, and it's insane how long she served!
@@shipwrecksunday the Saga Sisters had a long career as well! They also saved Cunard!
The SS American Victory in Tampa is painted in Dazzle scheme. It’s cool to see.

Something about the dazzle scheme of Mauritania though 😂
The starboard anchor still exists, over looking the mouth of the river Tyne

An excellent video once again miss! This is one of the most detailed videos I have seen about the RMS Mauretania. Well done!
Thanks so much, dear friend!!
Your ship breakdowns are amazingly detailed and great to watch.

The Mauretania had far more deck fence than her sister Lusitania, not the other way around as mentioned. Love this video!
