This guy's approach is so different to what most of heavy music producers do. Glad to see that less sterile approach can still work well in today's music. Turns out the best thing you can do sometimes is just trust your ears to guide you.
I just love the aggressive simplicity of his mixing-approach. Boosting every frequency by 12 dB? No problem. Want some nasty frequencies? Let's go bonkers with everything above 1 kHz. Hilarious. I love it. (So different from everything I've ever seen in any tutorial)
i love how Josh went several lengths to get that "crappy" Black Metal tone, but hey better have your sound good from the get go than having to fix a bad one.
I did the same thing-sent the guitars through Fortin, but then through Libra(using IRs dialed into Behemoth, Amon Amarth, Decapitated, Dying Fetus and others)and the guitar sound turned out amazing.
Very cool that this is out on the internets. It's also kinda hilarious how Josh doesn't remember doing a lotta this stuff! A legendary, groundbreaking mix and the cook was so flowin' he didn't remember the spices he threw in...\m/
i think the guitars should ve been more clean just to here the riffs. I was astonished when adam was on 4 levels of death metal and heard the riffs isolated, but thats just my personal opinion
digital clipping could be cool in this kind of sound. You lose information from the original audio but you gain volume and aggressiveness. This kind of sound is not meant to sound pretty. Clipping your channels is like using a hard clipping plugin but in a extreme way.
I somewhat did the same thing. I ran the already distorted guitar tracks through Fortin(I tried Sigma and a few others, but Fortin handled it the best) and then ran it through Libra-using impulse responses from Dying Fetus, Cattle Decapitation, Decapitated, Waking the Cadaver, and a few others. I experimented with this method before with awful results, but decided to give it another shot...glad I did. The results were amazing.
The standard setting of Reaper is to process tracks at 32 bit float. In doing so, you have almost infinite amounts of headroom. When your channel meter reads + 20 db overshoot and lets say you buss it into a groupbuss, you can simply turn down that group buss by 20 db and the signal is losslessly restored. The youtube channel Soundspeed did an excellent explanation on how 32 bit float works on a technical/mathematical level.
It’s a peavey 6505 amp (basically a 5150) and a mesa oversized cab (normally loaded with celestino vintage 30’s), which is a really standard combination of amp and cab for heavy metal tones
As much as their drummer is amazing, and the drums are cool, all recent lorna shore songs have melded into one for me with the lack of drumming variety, it's all just the same blast beat.
Wow, subtle use of noise gate on his voiceover 😆 Interesting video from an engineering perspective, but it perfectly illustrates why I hate deathcore and most modern metal. More of an sound production/engineering project than a musical project. Style over substance. Yeah, I am a boomer. Sue me 😉
Dont hate the process if it works and sounds good. This is still a song written by a band with emotional intent thats connected with a lot of people as clearly stated with how theyve blown up from this song. So clearly a lot of people dont hear it as just a production project

I now see why the album sounds like it does. This man is crazy
This heavily eq'ed Fortin guitars add something really cool to the tone
The drums sound insane 🤘
I absolutely LOVE everything he just said here.

Fuck yeah, glad to see he uses Reaper
I could watch Josh mix all day

Far from a legendary mix lol. The guitars are buried and it's just muddy
@@MANGRINDER_band_that's your opinion...it's not right but it's yours

I agree. I can’t hear anything thing they are doing but then look up tabs or vids and it’s great. Kinda disappointing
this guy is wild lmao
Gives me anxiety seeing all that clipping
Mixing doesn't have any rules , if it sounds good to the ears it's good , deal with it
Somebody is offended...
Master Bus not clipping 🫠
So probably fine I thought

could be 32bit float in which case no clipping
it adds a layer of crust. yep
its weird cause when he soloed that crud i realized thats what i was loving about the guitar tone hahahaha!
The 🐐
That Reaper layout is so...different lol
I think it's one of the old ones? I still use the one from 5, but this is some Windows 95 level stuff lol
In Reaper you can adjust your Theme to your liking and download thousands different ones! Reaper is insanely good!
It's from third version of Reaper, I personally still using it because of big horizontal meters.
I can't figure the routing he's doing with the Fortin. I can't tell if he's running copies kemper gtrs into the Fortin or the DIs.
I think they're the Kemper into the Fortin lol and then heavily EQed. Which is why it's so absurdly gainy

I am amazed that Josh Schroeder is using the DAW Reaper.
holy shit those chugs are NASTYYY
HI ! I am thinking about urm academy membership. If necessary, can I cancel it already during the first month? well thank you 🤘🏻😀🤘🏻
So how many rhythm guitars at all? Quadro?
What’s the Reaper template?
the og one i think
Gain staging at its best (:
TOTALLY ASS Kickin he uses Reaper!!!!!!
Nothing but layers xD
How many guitars are there ? Yes
This really shows how A Darkened Gospel is a superior mix.
Someone say something stupid like reaper is a toy daw......go on.....
I didn't know Mike Rowe mixed deathcore!
Gatekeep more. Not everyone needs to sound the same that's the beauty of art
All clipping on purpose?
yep

what is happening this just broke my brain
What is a 6505 mesa combo? Lol
I think he just means peavey 6505 amp into a mesa oversized cab. That's just a classic combination that works for recording heavy guitars.

That makes more sense
Christ the guitar tone alone sounds like shit, but god damn it just works in the mix.
Right? He boosts highs SO much.
he seems so clueless at parts its so funny x)
so much work spend on those guitars...and you barely hear them in the mix
Right? Like there's not point of all the details if it just sounds like blast beat noise haha
Right... it all just sounds like mud. I have no idea what the riff/important part is.
As much as their drummer is amazing, and the drums are cool, all recent lorna shore songs have melded into one for me with the lack of drumming variety, it's all just the same blast beat.
The mixing isn’t even great man. Kinda just frivolously done and you can tell cuz he doesn’t know what the fuck is happening in his own mix.
It's for atmosphere not so you can hear it perfectly. It's just there to fill in the empty spaces.
Wow, subtle use of noise gate on his voiceover 😆

You're not entirely wrong :)
Yeah, I thought he had a mild case of hiccups at first.
Musical production is a musical project in itself.
