An addendum: we have a small family of 3 adults. Because we live on a very small budget, my son hunts for any game in season on our 51/2 acres such as squirrel, rabbit, and deer. He is also a great fisherman going down to the river to catch whatever’s available crappie, bluegill, perch, walleye, salmon and occasional small mouth bass. That’s helped tremendously.🥰

Janice, we do the very same things y'all do: no paid TV subscription, no trash services, buy in bulk, raise our own meat (We buy ZERO meat in the store!), we have Jerseys in milk, raise a garden, thrift shop, and so much more! Our farm is more than half paid off (we've been here only 2 yrs!) and it makes a difference when you cut out non-essential stuff, and put your money to work for you. It's just me and my hubby, our kids are grown, and I find the 'envelope system' works very well! I challenge more ppl to do the same! Very rewarding! I ask the Good Lord to let me be a good steward with the money He allows us to make!
As always, I loved you and your video. The only idea I have is, I have a good friend that gardens too. She's in the mood to can a big batch of tomatoes. I'm ready to be done with tomatoes for a while. She came over this morning and we picked all the tomatoes I had ready. She'll can hers and mine up into something. I'll go next in a week or so and get her tomatoes and then I'll start in again. She has green beans ready and is ready for a break from canning them. So, she brought hers to me. Between what she brought and what I have ready I'll can up probably 40 pints, I have a 20 pints pressure canner, between today and tomorrow. Next week she'll be ready to tackle mine and her beans again. I'll be ready for tomatoes again. It works really slick, and we don't have to have such big gardens. We have another friend that has a husband that always plants way more carrots than they'll ever eat. I share my raspberries with her, and she shares her tons of carrots. II scrub many of them and put them in bags in the drawer of the fridge. They last all winter. I also grate some into 1 cup bags and freeze to add to soups, breads, muffins, desserts, etc. throughout the winter. We're all old with grown children so doing all this sharing makes it so much easier.
I always keep my eyes open at our local Walmart. Especially when the season is over. I am very good at stocking up in $1 clothes, jeans included. I size up and store them in tubs. I have noticed that our goodwill is no longer affordable. Their jeans are $8. With $2 more I can buy them new at Walmart. T shirts are the exact same price at regular really stores. I do however have a goodwill outlet that is 1.49 a pound. The only downside it’s time consuming searching through the bins.
Not eating out is great advice! To support that, try having homemade meals in the freezer or even just a couple bags of chicken tenders and French fries...when it started costing more than $30 for my family to eat at fast food places I realized that even though I didn't want to buy processed food, sometimes you need a quick/easy meal. Not to mention I can cook some chicken tenders in the air fryer faster than I can drive to a restaurant and cheaper since a $10-$15 bag of chicken from Costco can feed our large family easily :)
Growing up we didn’t eat out. If mom was busy later in the afternoon or we were out later than expected, we knew what was for dinner. Homemade pancakes and eggs, or French toast and fruit. We were excited because we loved “breakfast for dinner”! My boys loved Breakfast for dinner and I would put it on the meal plan a few times per month too.
Hello Family. I’m coming over from Money Mom. We always come over when Dawn collabs with someone because it meant so much to us when she collabed with us. She is one of the sweetest people we know and is always so encouraging to everyone on UA-cam. Our family dynamic is similar to Dawn’s except we have an adult son living with us instead of a daughter but we also live in the burbs. But I enjoyed your list. I grew up on a dairy farm so I related to a lot of things you suggested. Like growing up, I lived in hand me downs and we had large gardens and would burn our trash.
When our second oldest daughter was young she kept saying let’s go to God’s Will. I kept asking her what she was talking about. So one day we were out and she said “ There’s God’s Will. Let’s go.” I looked over and saw Goodwill. Now every time I pass a Goodwill it brings a smile to my face.

Hi from New Zealand 🇬🇸. My kids ,only 2 are in their twenties now. They used to make fun of me only buying in the sales and such. Any outings were always on discount days or times. They hated that I always said. " You can only spend a dollar once" Now they sew their own clothes, buy from second hand shops , walk and bus when they can My daughter worked 70 hours a week at 4 different jobs for 7 months when she left school and went travelling for two years before going to university.They're grateful to have been taught my frugal ways. Car maintenance do it yourself oil change and tuneup and get the parts for your vehicle repair from the junk yard if possible that right there saves you as much as 80 % on parts and for clothes and shoes there’s consignment shops that have great deals on stuff when they sell them for less when they’re overstocked and yard sales are great also
Loved this video! It’s just me and my husband now (73 and 78) but I am always looking for ways to save money. We have only been out to eat a few times this year. I cook from scratch most of the time. Today I am making homemade graham crackers. They are just about ready to pop in the oven. I also made vegetable beef soup today, and later this afternoon I am making jalapeño cornbread. Supper’s gonna be good!
We have family of 8 . We use cloth napkins and bandana handkerchiefs. We get them in different colors and everyone knows their color. We have eliminated facial tissues and paper napkins and greatly reduced our paper towel usage. We also use every one of the tips you shared. Thanks for the great tips
Sometime back, I was reading an article on a Homesteading site on reducing toilet paper. I know it may sound crazy, but I read that ppl make 'wipe cloths' out of flannel and used only when urinating and washed every few days. A can was put in the bathroom and used solely for that purpose. Let's face it; women use a lot of toilet paper! :) I guess if push came to a shove, we'd all do what we needed to make our goods stretch further.
Personally, I do not have much in sewing skills. Found out cloth baby wipes work best. White ones I kept accidentally flushing down the toilet in the middle of the night. Next few packages I took out the white ones, and designated them as my daily facial clothes. A portable squeeze bidet has traveled with me during three unexpected apartment moves the last ten years. This helps greatly cut back on my toilet paper products. Not going to get rich off this system, but it does save a few welcome few dollars each month.
@@kimberlygates4488My 'method' after several tries, ended up going to Smart and Final and purchased three sizes of dishtowels. The first purchase reminded me of bath washclothes. These are restaurant quality cleaning cloths. The one the size of a bath facial cloth, I ended up designating as my paper napkin system. My tea towels are from Grocery Outlet. No prints, but some have irregular placements of sewing the weave, which I actually like and enjoy. Bandanas are too large for my usage yet I do like the idea they are thin enough to handwash and hang for a quick air dry.
I can remember my grandma using rain water from large barrels to wash our hair and also to wash clothes if we had lots of rain!!!! (we do get rain in the UK!!!). She had a boiler with a mangle and Monday was the day she spent all day doing the washing and hanging it up outside on a string line or on wooden 'clothes horses' indoors, which is what we used to call them! She & my Grandpa always grew their own veg and she always made meals from scratch. We always had a roast lunch on a Sunday with all the trimmings, Monday was cold meat from the roast and pickles, Tuesday was shepherds pie from what was leftover from the roast meat, Can't remember what we had for the rest of the week except that Friday was always fish! There were 7 of us in the family and I look back on those times with such happiness. Life was simple and uncomplicated. My grandparents worked very hard to make sure her children and grandchildren were well fed and clothed. There was no striving for unattainable goals or mental health issues or dissatisfaction etc. It's taught me that simple things are always better inspite of how rich you are.

Even though it is only me, I think I'm going to start my own inventory index cards. That way when I visit my local thrift store ( run by a church with great low prices) I will check my card and if it's something I don't need, I will pass that bargain up. I've been decluttering this year and need some discipline when it comes to bargains! You have the life many would love to have. I'm sure there are many hard days but your reward will be great. Abigail did great! I love your ideas! I would add (1) using the library rather than buying books helps me a lot (not directed at home schooling needs, obviously!), (2) being careful to use higher deductibles on insurance and drop comprehensive/collision on older cars, (3) using a free charge card that pays a nice rebate on things I am going to buy anyway (groceries, gas, utilities), and (4) only buying gently used cars.
As a widow I also do these 4 things...I agree scratch cooking saves a lot actually I am not that fond of dinning meals out. Have shopped thrift stores for years also work at food banks and pick up a lot of what I need as a volunteer.
Lots of good tips there! One thing that helped me save money was our local extension service. It has been quite a few years since I used it when my kids were young, but they offered lots of written information about preserving foods, saving money, recipes for master mixes (how to make your own biscuit mix, hot cocoa mix, hamburger helper mixes, and other things you might bebpaying more for in individual boxes)., and programs to help you save money whether you are a small family in the city or a latrge rural homesteading family. Thanks for the informative videos! Your kids are so sweet. 😊

Here's an idea I've been actually doing for 2 yrs; buy dollar store metal pizza pans; make your own frozen pizzas. The Internet has many suggestions on doughs; I precook mine for 6 min.; Cool; put toppings on; flash freeze; than wrap them twice in your favorite wrap.... By far cheaper than the store an you control the toppings.... Great for using up leftover; BBQ meats, leftover fresh veggies an so on.

With the 75% off you got a very good deal on the jeans, that brand is ridiculously expensive brand new. They look practically brand new and were only $4.04. Great Score, Janice! You might already know this but just in case you don't...most electric companies charge more for electric during "peak hours" you should be able to find out whether your electric company does this and what their "peak hours" are. If you run your washer and dishwasher during non peak hours that could save you some money too. Also, there is a thing called the Affordable-Connectivity-Program, which will take $30 of your Internet bill, I'm sure with 9 people in your family that you would qualify for it. As far as cellphones, Mint-Mobile charges $15 a month if you pay for a year in advance. Just some more suggestions for you or your audience!
Also check with your local Goodwill store. Mine does a different color tag every day of the week for 50% off. They have seasonal sales that off 75% off.

I love clothes on a clothesline,but I have a funny story to share. Growing up we never owned a dryer so all clothes were hung no matter the weather. Sometimes stiff with frost but the real fun was when we lived near a feedlot. Clothes on the line absorbed the essence of cow manure which wasn’t offensive until you started wearing them and they warmed up. Oh my! ,we were pretty rank sometimes. Makes me chuckle now, but as a teenager it was not the fragrance you wished for.
New here for a couple months. Love your channel and have binge watched some of your content. Love how you and your husband have raised the children to teach them skills. I’m 77 retired nurse who tried to do the same with my (only 2) but then raised our twin grandsons from age 8 till they graduated high school when our daughter returned after a hard time. I now help with great grandsons by keeping them to catch school bus and returning here after school. Homework, etc…..oh my I’ve written a book. Anyway keep up the good work.

I have the short drying rack , when my parents passed away I had to go thru an 3200 sq ft house I was constantly crying because I felt bad going through there things 😩 but I got the drying rack it was my mothers great memories ❤️

We live in a neighborhood that added the trash service into our taxes. Boo! We only use one bag a week but we aren’t allowed to use a burn barrel but it would be so much easier to compost, recycle and burn the rest. I would love to see how you do trash even if we can’t do it 😁 Totally agree about fast food. I have chili homemade in the freezer and we keep grilled sliced chicken so I can make fried rice or paninis or other things. I put post it notes on my food buckets so I can send others and they can pull it out. Cooking from scratch helps so much!
I love charity shops here, that's what we call them. As all money spent in those second hand shops goes straight to charity, like helping kids, homeless, older people, people with disability etc...plus you get really good clothes. They are amazing. 😁
When I cook meals that freeze well, I cook double or triple batches to save for those days that I cant cook, either im not feeling well or ive been to out of town appts or whatever

Hand-me-downs, wow that brings back memories, when I was a kid the only hand-me-downs I didn't get were when Daddy bought us school clothes. My clothes were from my older sister that she outgrew, and the clothes I outgrew were passed down to my younger sister, and my stepmother at the time handsewn clothes for us as well. Very familiar with hand-me-downs. :) Great video, thank you, Janice!! Clothesline had to use that too, Clotheslines were mandatory unless it was raining, too hot or someone was sick. We were always kept mindful of how expensive things were. lol

Your outdoor clothes line is a rotary clothes line. All Australian houses have outdoor clothes lines. Most also have some sort of Indoor clothes horse/airer too. I have 2 upright Airers for indoors, plus smaller ones that fit over the top of doors. We're a smaller family with 3 adults, who have various food allergies. Fast food for us is ... Leftovers. I freeze leftovers in single serve portions. They take almost no time to reheat.
I grew up on 4 acres. We had a wood stove, clothesline and a burn barrel. My dad still use the burn barrel. We also did a lot of canning in the summer as well. We have 2 sons and I always shopped at 2nd hand stores for us. I also got great clothing/shoes clearance deals at Fred Meyer (Kroger) at the end of each season. They would be 60-75% off the lowest price sticker. Good times!
Hi Janice, I dry my clothes on hangers, I have a clothes rail on wheels (heavy duty thing) and again like you dry overnight - there is only me but I hate the sight clothes drying in the house - no idea why. In the good weather I dry outside - I don't actually have a tumble dryer. I also shop charity (thrift) shops and also eBay both of which are getting expensive here in the UK. I didn't get a garden going this year due to ill health but am planning a winter one. Saving like mad for a dehydrator so I can do that next year - I buy a lot of dehydrated fruit and veggies for the winter so convenient and take up very little space. Loved your video! It’s just me and my husband, but takeout has gotten so expensive! I have spinal stenosis, so some days I don’t feel good. I have gotten in the habit of having 3 meals made ahead and are sitting in the freezer. Casserole, meatloaf, and already cooked hamburgers. I pull something out and put a vegetable with it! If I use one of the meals, I make sure to replace it the next day with a new meal.
Yes, we would love to see how you do your recycling and burn trash. I remember from my childhood it's not a good thing to burn trash when you have clothes hanging on the line! Lol Also, if you make homemade egg noodles and let them dry on the counter, could you please do a video on that? When my turkeys are finished cooking, I cut the legs off and freeze them for noodles. I use 2 turkey legs for a family of 4, simmer them a couple of hours with salt and pepper, then remove and put on a plate to cool while I cut the noodles and put them in to boil. While the noodles are cooking, I remove the meat from the turkey legs and add it to the noodles. So much better than store bought noodles. I don't call these dumplings. To me, dumplings are what I make with self-rising flour in broth. Sometimes I will cut up an uncooked chuck roast and use it to make noodles with as well.
I stock up on tea, coffee and cocoa. To make sure we always have something warm to drink especially in the winter. I like to make sure my coffee station has cocoa, honey, teas and warm water. I stock up on gingerale. Since we are not huge soda drinkers. We don't pay cable, netflix etc. We have Pureflix. We watch sometimes. Great family value movies. So many great ways to save money! Wow what an amazing lot of pears that is my favorite fruit oh, you are so blessed. The only fruit we have on our land is blackberries and don't get me wrong I love them and we have hundreds and hundreds of bushes it's like a big field of them. so I enjoy those. One day I would love to have a garden like you guys do, is awesome to live off the land and eat the fruits and vegetables that you growed yourself. And I noticed that you have your own milk, that is so awesome. I love how resourceful you and your family are it's awesome.❤❤
I think what saves some money to put it towards other things, is feminine hygiene products. Cloth based products are wonderful and work really well. They are also cost effective when buying single and in small quantities. Sure, you have to wash them but you can air dry them outside and or in front of your heat source in the Winter months. Twenty-five pads per daughter is a great basic number per female child because you have two to three days worth of pads before you need to wash them. The cost overall is well worth investing a little bit upfront first.
I'm in the UK. You're absolutely right on you save a lot drying outside. Unless it's summer here ( we have so much rain), we have to use tumble dryers to dry clothes. Boy, do you notice the difference on your electric bills if you can dry outside. If the heating is on, I hang clothes on clothes hangers and hook them over curtains rails as heat rises. Would you have any tips on how to stop my Tomartoes splitting on the plants? It's such a shame we couldn't see more of the thrift store shopping. We don't have the big ones like you do, only little ones. Sometimes they are more expensive than in normal clothes shops! By the way love Daisy the cow mooooing, it make it more homely❤

Good tips! I started to cook from scratch. I realized when I have raw ingredients then I can cook anything my family wants so I stocked up on them. we don’t have to buy items like bread, granola, yogurt etc. I hope you are still open on making a video about parenting! Brand new Levi's jeans can cost around $100 a pair so I would assume that is why the price is where it's at. Especially considering that pair was in quite good condition.
With the price of groceries these days eating out is a special occasion only for us...I like to bake and cook so not a big deal for me...sometimes we just have a fried egg sandwich or soup and sandwich for supper...we're older so we don't do enough anymore to get really hungry...Your money saving ideas for a large family are great ideas to share with others😊
I reuse my foil if its not to bad. I also reuse all bread / bun bags.. Put my homemade breads in them. Also I'll double or triple them to make them thicker and freeze things in them. Pack sandwiches in them etc. Don't buy plastic bags if you have bread bags. They are your plastic bag. Even the big ones that frozen chicken/ meat come in. They even ziplock .
You can make your own laundry soap make mine 6 months at a time ,we also have a garden and chickens for eggs .we try to eatup all left overs or use them to make soup or something else. I can alot or freeze veggies wish we had room fora cow.
P.s. look 4 church sales and clothing closets at local churches the cloths r free 😊 look into local libraries they may have a section of books for sale cheap ours does or u can check out also
I came over from Dawn at Money Mom. I get my jeans from Goodwill but they are only $7.45 thankfully. $16.00+ is outrageous. Glad it was 75% off. My Goodwill only has 50% off certain color tags and the color changes weekly.

To support that, try having homemade meals in the freezer or even just a couple bags of chicken tenders and French fries...when it started costing more than $30 for my family to eat at fast food places I realized that even though I didn't want to buy processed food, sometimes you need a quick/easy meal. Not to mention I can cook some chicken tenders in the air fryer faster than I can drive to a restaurant and cheaper since a $10-$15 bag of chicken from Costco can feed our large family easily :)
Yes, I try to avoid most processed foods too, but I'm glad to have them available when I'm on a bind and can use them for convenience. 😁
Growing up we didn’t eat out. If mom was busy later in the afternoon or we were out later than expected, we knew what was for dinner. Homemade pancakes and eggs, or French toast and fruit. We were excited because we loved “breakfast for dinner”! My boys loved Breakfast for dinner and I would put it on the meal plan a few times per month too.

Hello Family. I’m coming over from Money Mom. We always come over when Dawn collabs with someone because it meant so much to us when she collabed with us. She is one of the sweetest people we know and is always so encouraging to everyone on UA-cam.
Our family dynamic is similar to Dawn’s except we have an adult son living with us instead of a daughter but we also live in the burbs.
But I enjoyed your list. I grew up on a dairy farm so I related to a lot of things you suggested. Like growing up, I lived in hand me downs and we had large gardens and would burn our trash.
I love too see how you celebrate the kids individual birthday to make them feel special.
When our second oldest daughter was young she kept saying let’s go to God’s Will. I kept asking her what she was talking about. So one day we were out and she said “ There’s God’s Will. Let’s go.” I looked over and saw Goodwill. Now every time I pass a Goodwill it brings a smile to my face.

Hi from New Zealand 🇬🇸. My kids ,only 2 are in their twenties now. They used to make fun of me only buying in the sales and such. Any outings were always on discount days or times. They hated that I always said. " You can only spend a dollar once"
Now they sew their own clothes, buy from second hand shops , walk and bus when they can My daughter worked 70 hours a week at 4 different jobs for 7 months when she left school and went travelling for two years before going to university.They're grateful to have been taught my frugal ways. Xx

Car maintenance do it yourself oil change and tuneup and get the parts for your vehicle repair from the junk yard if possible that right there saves you as much as 80 % on parts and for clothes and shoes there’s consignment shops that have great deals on stuff when they sell them for less when they’re overstocked and yard sales are great also
Loved this video! It’s just me and my husband now (73 and 78) but I am always looking for ways to save money. We have only been out to eat a few times this year. I cook from scratch most of the time. Today I am making homemade graham crackers. They are just about ready to pop in the oven. I also made vegetable beef soup today, and later this afternoon I am making jalapeño cornbread. Supper’s gonna be good!

We have family of 8 . We use cloth napkins and bandana handkerchiefs. We get them in different colors and everyone knows their color. We have eliminated facial tissues and paper napkins and greatly reduced our paper towel usage. We also use every one of the tips you shared. Thanks for the great tips
Sometime back, I was reading an article on a Homesteading site on reducing toilet paper. I know it may sound crazy, but I read that ppl make 'wipe cloths' out of flannel and used only when urinating and washed every few days. A can was put in the bathroom and used solely for that purpose. Let's face it; women use a lot of toilet paper! :)
I guess if push came to a shove, we'd all do what we needed to make our goods stretch further.
I would love to figure out how to not buy paper towels. I bet I spend almost $35 a month on them!
Personally, I do not have much in sewing skills. Found out cloth baby wipes work best. White ones I kept accidentally flushing down the toilet in the middle of the night. Next few packages I took out the white ones, and designated them as my daily facial clothes. A portable squeeze bidet has traveled with me during three unexpected apartment moves the last ten years. This helps greatly cut back on my toilet paper products. Not going to get rich off this system, but it does save a few welcome few dollars each month.
@@kimberlygates4488My 'method' after several tries, ended up going to Smart and Final and purchased three sizes of dishtowels. The first purchase reminded me of bath washclothes. These are restaurant quality cleaning cloths. The one the size of a bath facial cloth, I ended up designating as my paper napkin system. My tea towels are from Grocery Outlet. No prints, but some have irregular placements of sewing the weave, which I actually like and enjoy. Bandanas are too large for my usage yet I do like the idea they are thin enough to handwash and hang for a quick air dry.

I can remember my grandma using rain water from large barrels to wash our hair and also to wash clothes if we had lots of rain!!!! (we do get rain in the UK!!!). She had a boiler with a mangle and Monday was the day she spent all day doing the washing and hanging it up outside on a string line or on wooden 'clothes horses' indoors, which is what we used to call them! She & my Grandpa always grew their own veg and she always made meals from scratch. We always had a roast lunch on a Sunday with all the trimmings, Monday was cold meat from the roast and pickles, Tuesday was shepherds pie from what was leftover from the roast meat, Can't remember what we had for the rest of the week except that Friday was always fish! There were 7 of us in the family and I look back on those times with such happiness. Life was simple and uncomplicated. My grandparents worked very hard to make sure her children and grandchildren were well fed and clothed. There was no striving for unattainable goals or mental health issues or dissatisfaction etc. It's taught me that simple things are always better inspite of how rich you are.

Even though it is only me, I think I'm going to start my own inventory index cards. That way when I visit my local thrift store ( run by a church with great low prices) I will check my card and if it's something I don't need, I will pass that bargain up. I've been decluttering this year and need some discipline when it comes to bargains! You have the life many would love to have. I'm sure there are many hard days but your reward will be great. Abigail did great! I love your ideas! I would add (1) using the library rather than buying books helps me a lot (not directed at home schooling needs, obviously!), (2) being careful to use higher deductibles on insurance and drop comprehensive/collision on older cars, (3) using a free charge card that pays a nice rebate on things I am going to buy anyway (groceries, gas, utilities), and (4) only buying gently used cars.
As a widow I also do these 4 things...I agree scratch cooking saves a lot actually I am not that fond of dinning meals out. Have shopped thrift stores for years also work at food banks and pick up a lot of what I need as a volunteer.

Lots of good tips there! One thing that helped me save money was our local extension service. It has been quite a few years since I used it when my kids were young, but they offered lots of written information about preserving foods, saving money, recipes for master mixes (how to make your own biscuit mix, hot cocoa mix, hamburger helper mixes, and other things you might bebpaying more for in individual boxes)., and programs to help you save money whether you are a small family in the city or a latrge rural homesteading family. Thanks for the informative videos! Your kids are so sweet. 😊

Here's an idea I've been actually doing for 2 yrs; buy dollar store metal pizza pans; make your own frozen pizzas. The Internet has many suggestions on doughs; I precook mine for 6 min.; Cool; put toppings on; flash freeze; than wrap them twice in your favorite wrap.... By far cheaper than the store an you control the toppings.... Great for using up leftover; BBQ meats, leftover fresh veggies an so on.

Maybe, you could put the children's sizes for clothes and shoes in the description box, so your supporters would know what sizes to get if they wanted to gift those to you. With the 75% off you got a very good deal on the jeans, that brand is ridiculously expensive brand new. They look practically brand new and were only $4.04. Great Score, Janice! You might already know this but just in case you don't...most electric companies charge more for electric during "peak hours" you should be able to find out whether your electric company does this and what their "peak hours" are. If you run your washer and dishwasher during non peak hours that could save you some money too. Also, there is a thing called the Affordable-Connectivity-Program, which will take $30 of your Internet bill, I'm sure with 9 people in your family that you would qualify for it. As far as cellphones, Mint-Mobile charges $15 a month if you pay for a year in advance. Just some more suggestions for you or your audience!
Also check with your local Goodwill store. Mine does a different color tag every day of the week for 50% off. They have seasonal sales that off 75% off.

I love clothes on a clothesline,but I have a funny story to share. Growing up we never owned a dryer so all clothes were hung no matter the weather. Sometimes stiff with frost but the real fun was when we lived near a feedlot. Clothes on the line absorbed the essence of cow manure which wasn’t offensive until you started wearing them and they warmed up. Oh my! ,we were pretty rank sometimes. Makes me chuckle now, but as a teenager it was not the fragrance you wished for.
New here for a couple months. Love your channel and have binge watched some of your content. Love how you and your husband have raised the children to teach them skills. I’m 77 retired nurse who tried to do the same with my (only 2) but then raised our twin grandsons from age 8 till they graduated high school when our daughter returned after a hard time. I now help with great grandsons by keeping them to catch school bus and returning here after school. Homework, etc…..oh my I’ve written a book. Anyway keep up the good work.

I have the short drying rack , when my parents passed away I had to go thru an 3200 sq ft house I was constantly crying because I felt bad going through there things 😩 but I got the drying rack it was my mothers great memories ❤️

We live in a neighborhood that added the trash service into our taxes. Boo! We only use one bag a week but we aren’t allowed to use a burn barrel but it would be so much easier to compost, recycle and burn the rest. I would love to see how you do trash even if we can’t do it 😁 Totally agree about fast food. I have chili homemade in the freezer and we keep grilled sliced chicken so I can make fried rice or paninis or other things. I put post it notes on my food buckets so I can send others and they can pull it out. Cooking from scratch helps so much!
I love charity shops here, that's what we call them. As all money spent in those second hand shops goes straight to charity, like helping kids, homeless, older people, people with disability etc...plus you get really good clothes. They are amazing. 😁
I have ironed on many a patch to my husband's blue jeans/work pants. (Mutch cheaper than replacing)
When I cook meals that freeze well, I cook double or triple batches to save for those days that I cant cook, either im not feeling well or ive been to out of town appts or whatever

Drying on the washing line is just standard in the uk. I hardly use my dryer. I even use my clothes horses outside too.

Hand-me-downs, wow that brings back memories, when I was a kid the only hand-me-downs I didn't get were when Daddy bought us school clothes. My clothes were from my older sister that she outgrew, and the clothes I outgrew were passed down to my younger sister, and my stepmother at the time handsewn clothes for us as well. Very familiar with hand-me-downs. :) Great video, thank you, Janice!! Clothesline had to use that too, Clotheslines were mandatory unless it was raining, too hot or someone was sick. We were always kept mindful of how expensive things were. lol

Your outdoor clothes line is a rotary clothes line. All Australian houses have outdoor clothes lines. Most also have some sort of Indoor clothes horse/airer too. I have 2 upright Airers for indoors, plus smaller ones that fit over the top of doors.
We're a smaller family with 3 adults, who have various food allergies. Fast food for us is ... Leftovers. I freeze leftovers in single serve portions. They take almost no time to reheat.
I grew up on 4 acres. We had a wood stove, clothesline and a burn barrel. My dad still use the burn barrel. We also did a lot of canning in the summer as well. We have 2 sons and I always shopped at 2nd hand stores for us. I also got great clothing/shoes clearance deals at Fred Meyer (Kroger) at the end of each season. They would be 60-75% off the lowest price sticker. Good times!

Hi Janice, I dry my clothes on hangers, I have a clothes rail on wheels (heavy duty thing) and again like you dry overnight - there is only me but I hate the sight clothes drying in the house - no idea why. In the good weather I dry outside - I don't actually have a tumble dryer. I also shop charity (thrift) shops and also eBay both of which are getting expensive here in the UK. I didn't get a garden going this year due to ill health but am planning a winter one. Saving like mad for a dehydrator so I can do that next year - I buy a lot of dehydrated fruit and veggies for the winter so convenient and take up very little space. Love your videos and your amazing family

Loved your video! It’s just me and my husband, but takeout has gotten so expensive! I have spinal stenosis, so some days I don’t feel good. I have gotten in the habit of having 3 meals made ahead and are sitting in the freezer. Casserole, meatloaf, and already cooked hamburgers. I pull something out and put a vegetable with it! If I use one of the meals, I make sure to replace it the next day with a new meal.

Yes, we would love to see how you do your recycling and burn trash. I remember from my childhood it's not a good thing to burn trash when you have clothes hanging on the line! Lol Also, if you make homemade egg noodles and let them dry on the counter, could you please do a video on that? When my turkeys are finished cooking, I cut the legs off and freeze them for noodles. I use 2 turkey legs for a family of 4, simmer them a couple of hours with salt and pepper, then remove and put on a plate to cool while I cut the noodles and put them in to boil. While the noodles are cooking, I remove the meat from the turkey legs and add it to the noodles. So much better than store bought noodles. I don't call these dumplings. To me, dumplings are what I make with self-rising flour in broth. Sometimes I will cut up an uncooked chuck roast and use it to make noodles with as well.
I stock up on tea, coffee and cocoa. To make sure we always have something warm to drink especially in the winter. I like to make sure my coffee station has cocoa, honey, teas and warm water. I stock up on gingerale. Since we are not huge soda drinkers. We don't pay cable, netflix etc. We have Pureflix. We watch sometimes. Great family value movies. So many great ways to save money! Wow what an amazing lot of pears that is my favorite fruit oh, you are so blessed. The only fruit we have on our land is blackberries and don't get me wrong I love them and we have hundreds and hundreds of bushes it's like a big field of them. so I enjoy those. One day I would love to have a garden like you guys do, is awesome to live off the land and eat the fruits and vegetables that you growed yourself. And I noticed that you have your own milk, that is so awesome. I love how resourceful you and your family are it's awesome.❤❤
I think what saves some money to put it towards other things, is feminine hygiene products. Cloth based products are wonderful and work really well. They are also cost effective when buying single and in small quantities. Sure, you have to wash them but you can air dry them outside and or in front of your heat source in the Winter months. Twenty-five pads per daughter is a great basic number per female child because you have two to three days worth of pads before you need to wash them. The cost overall is well worth investing a little bit upfront first.

I'm in the UK. You're absolutely right on you save a lot drying outside.
Unless it's summer here ( we have so much rain), we have to use tumble dryers to dry clothes. Boy, do you notice the difference on your electric bills if you can dry outside.
If the heating is on, I hang clothes on clothes hangers and hook them over curtains rails as heat rises.
Would you have any tips on how to stop my Tomartoes splitting on the plants?
It's such a shame we couldn't see more of the thrift store shopping. We don't have the big ones like you do, only little ones. Sometimes they are more expensive than in normal clothes shops!

Good tips! I started to cook from scratch. I realized when I have raw ingredients then I can cook anything my family wants so I stocked up on them. we don’t have to buy items like bread, granola, yogurt etc.

Brand new Levi's jeans can cost around $100 a pair so I would assume that is why the price is where it's at. Especially considering that pair was in quite good condition.
With the price of groceries these days eating out is a special occasion only for us...I like to bake and cook so not a big deal for me...sometimes we just have a fried egg sandwich or soup and sandwich for supper...we're older so we don't do enough anymore to get really hungry...Your money saving ideas for a large family are great ideas to share with others😊
I reuse my foil if its not to bad. I also reuse all bread / bun bags.. Put my homemade breads in them. Also I'll double or triple them to make them thicker and freeze things in them. Pack sandwiches in them etc. Don't buy plastic bags if you have bread bags. They are your plastic bag. Even the big ones that frozen chicken/ meat come in. They even ziplock .
You can make your own laundry soap make mine 6 months at a time ,we also have a garden and chickens for eggs .we try to eatup all left overs or use them to make soup or something else. I can alot or freeze veggies wish we had room fora cow.
