      Many thanks for another top video. Decades ago I had a petrol Sherpa van that didn't like starting on cold wet mornings. What I did was put a paraffin lamp in the engine compartment (IIRC it sat on the axle) and a blanket over the engine to keep some of the heat in. I had no more starting problems. Obviously don't put it too close to anything that might burn or melt. With the diesel engine it might just raise the temperature enough that the glow plugs have an easier job and the fuel in the injectors is more viscous.

      Hey thanks for the tip! Are all the old Sherpas petrol? We're thinking about trying to get hold of an old 4x4 model (we know they're super rare) but we just love the idea of continuing the old British motor theme with our future travels. Cheers

    Thank you for this series, hope to see much more of Macedonia; I will be going in May! Your video style seems so unique and unconventional, I enjoy watching these travelogue's because of that; since they show a different and kinda unseen version of many places.

    That LDV has done you proud on these adventures of yours. A little tip for ultra cold starting....switch ignition on and wait for the glow plug light to go off but do not start it, instead turn ignition off and back on again and wait for the glow plug light to go off again. Do this three or four times and it ensures the glow plugs are super hot and even warms the cylinders a bit. This will start even some of the older engines in extreme conditions. Your editing was superb on this video. Brilliant video. Happy travels guys.

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 роки тому

      Hey thanks for that 😃 we’ve been cycling the ignition but it doesn’t seem to help anymore, the last few mornings we’ve killed the battery trying to start even when the volts start at 13. Glow plugs are completely knackered, either that or the relay. We can’t find a multimeter to check them (totally should’ve bought one with us). The glow plug light is actually broken now because it’s been flashing for so long telling us something is wrong haha!

    In the winter when I'm not using the van-a VW T4- much, I leave a solar battery charger plugged in. Just leave it plugged in to your power socket, prop it up on the dash and it will trickle charge the battery. Just enough power going in to compensate for power draining out. It would take forever to charge a flat battery but for keeping a charged battery fully charged it works.

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 роки тому +2

      Sounds good. Will look at investing in one of these when we get back for sure

  • @StacyForest738

    Never would have thought about parking the van so the cold doesn't blow toward the engine, good point. We didn't build out our van with winter in mind either. We are in the southern US where heat and humidity are the main factors but after our first freezing night we started looking into heaters, ended up with a Chinese diesel heater, uses only the tiniest bit of fuel to power it. We were also surprised at how cold it got in the van, I swear sometimes it was colder in the van than it was outside. Love the video today...your music is always on point.

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 роки тому

      Ah yes we’re looking at getting a Chinese diesel heater next I think! We’ve heard good stuff about them. How are they to install?

    • @StacyForest738
      @StacyForest738 4 роки тому

      @@FromRustToRoadtrip They are not too bad to install, took us a couple of hours but only because we had to drill a whole in the floor pan (for the exhaust pipe) and find a way to elevate the machine off the floor. The instructions are terrible but there are really helpful youtube videos out there that will guide you through it. So far it is well worth the $116 we paid for it. Heats super fast and is a nice dry heat that uses only minimal fuel.

    In the extreme cold mornings, try glowing your engine multiple times before letting it crank over. Should start a lot quicker and wont drain your battery as much.

    Well I think you are bonkers driving on ice and snow in a RWD van. Having lived in the Scottish Highlands I would take it cautiously in a 4x4 Range Rover. Going up is one thing, coming down is even worse, never use your brakes, only all gear control. Another 2 useful tips regarding diesel, always add a small amount of petrol to it to stop it freezing. Next carry a powerbank. I got mine from Halfords for £40 and it has jump leads for starting, a 12 volt and a 5 volt output. A godsend if your car battery dies and 10 years later works like new. The 5 volt will charge mobile phone. Using the 12 volt with a sine wave converter will give you 240 volts. The internal battery in mine is 17 amps but is upscaled to start a van up to 2.5 lts.

    I saw the first minute and was wondering how, then you mentioned winter tyres, I got some on my volvo in december, hardly a frost here in the uk so far, lots of rain and some snow forecast later this week. you are pushing the ldv! -14 degrees cold start! I wonder if the fuel freezes or thickens in the lines?

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 роки тому

      Ah typical! And the LDV unfortunately didn’t start by herself in -14°C, she needed a bit of help but she managed it in -10°C. Diesel thickens at -15°C but the cold doesn’t do good things for the oil hence why we’ve just changed it to some thinner stuff. As long as the engine is out of the wind she’s alright!
