The year the Saints finally earned themselves a winning record. 1987.

This game was a milestone in Saints history. In my opinion this was the game where they finally slammed the door on the past and went from perennial losers to a consistently winning franchise. They cemented with the goal line stand at Pittsburgh a few weeks later.

This was the start of a nine game winning streak for the Saints.

Mel Gray, Morten Anderson & Steve Gleason should be members of the All time Saints Special Team list of players.

Hebert one of most underrated QB all time , go to 1:00 hour and watch the flag pattern to Brenner he throws and watch his flawless release and delivery , so compact and quick with good velocity but anticipation and touch , he was my favorite QB all time since USFL 83 and watched all saints cause of him and his talent was wasted on Saints due to play calling and lack of top tier talent at WR especially lack of speed .

Lots of talent with the Falcons, but during this period, the average age of their players was 23 years old,, maybe the youngest team in the league.
And, their defense couldn't stop a good running game for nothin'. Felt bad for coach, Marion Campbell. Here he is, for the second time in franchise history, inheriting a Holy Mess,, left by the last coach, with little time or chance, to sort it out. The time before that was 1974/5, when Norm Van Brocklin was fired.
Still using last coach, Dan Henning's H-Back concept - a brilliant idea that flopped. Saints no "Aints", at this point, not with that large, talent-laden O-line and those linebackers.

The Saints offense in 1987 might not be impressive but they did get the job done.

You have to watch the last ten minutes to understand the glorious absurdity that is New Orleans.

28-3 sums up the entire dubious existence of the Falcons franchise.

Atlanta QB Scott Campbell throws 4 interceptions and is sacked 3 times. No single player is 100% responsible for losing a game but this vastly contributed to it.

So you are saying it was a team effort? I lived in Atlanta at this time and remember this game.

The 87 falcons. 1 of the worst teams ever. Dead last in offense and defense, in points and yards. Not a ton of talent, and a head coach who shouldn't have been a head coach

      Saints in a closely contested 38 - 0 ballgame.
The Saints entered the game 3 - 3 and finished 12 -3 that year (one game was canceled in strike shortened season) so they went on a 9 game winning streak to end the season.
I was fired up to see them in their first postseason game. Got out early on Minnesota and ended up losing 44 -10 ... ouch!

    • @kyle1910

For much of the 80s ATL wore white at home for the first one or two home games, in '87 they did the first half of the season. In '86 and '89 they did the entire season.
