Dangerous Hike Along the Rail Tracks in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 тра 2019
- One of the best things to do in Sri Lanka is hiking in the beautiful countryside. This afternoon hike wasn't planned. I was actually on the train from Colombo to Ohiya and decided to get off one stop early, at Pattipola station, so that I could hike along the rail tracks to my final destination.
Travelling light with just a 30 litre backpack gives me the freedom to do stuff like that.
It was a fun adventure until I came across a dark tunnel, full of bats, with no light at the end. Did I dare to go through it?
It may seem strange to people from western countries but walking on the rail tracks is fairly common in Sri Lanka. Locals use the tracks often as shortcuts. Is it safe? With trains being so few and far between it is safe, as long as you know when the trains are coming. I didn't, but don't be stupid like me.
I travelled to this area, known as the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka in order to hike the World's End trail in the Horton Plains National Park (also famous for the Devil's Staircase). There will be another video about my adventures there coming soon.
The train line that I hiked on is famed for being the most beautiful train ride in the world. It's the Colombo - Badulla line, which stops at Hatton, Kotagala, Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) and Ella, which are some of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka.
The price of the train ticket was 600 rupees for 2nd class unreserved. It's basically impossible to reserve a seat on this train unless you book the ticket 1 month in advance, when they are made available. To do that you either need to be in Sri Lanka or pay extra to use an internet based agency.

Huh ! So u are luky to be alive from the train after the tunnel . And anyways u do an amazing job. I'm from colombo
@@putrajurangpati6010 If the train came I would have leaned against the wall and (probably) been fine, haha. Thank you my friend, I will upload another video tomorrow.
Love your vedio! Very different to the most of SL travel vedios! Ohiya is one of my favourite travelling destinations in SL. ❤❤❤❤👍👍👍
@@chamillalakmali8139 It's a very special part of the country. 🧡
👍👍👍
You are a real traveler...This is how you should enjoy traveling.
Thank you my friend. I'm happier doing stuff like this than paying to get into some "attraction" filled with tourists.
@Enchanted Forest Thanks for the kind words. I'm still just a beginner with making these videos so hopefully a year or two from now they will be even better to watch. :)
@@Dale_Philip you doing great .....
I find this particular video a great cure for constipation Dale!
I love that he can have fun on his own without partner.
Dude you're hella brave to go through that first tunnel. I almost crapped my pants watching you lol.
I have to credit it more to my stupidity than my bravery I'm afraid 😆
@@Dale_Philip Hahaha
@@Dale_Philip i guess there will be small pocket areas inside tunnel to stand aside incase
😂😂 same here
What a timing 😨 but don’t try it anymore 😬
I was screaming “run run, hurry up“ 😅
This is the second longest railway tunnel in Sri Lanka which was constructed more than hundred years ago by British engineers. Something special in this tunnel, this tunnel connects two different climate zones. When you enter to the tunnel you will experience one climate and once you come out from other end you can experience totally different climate. Sometimes when you enter to the tunnel it's raining heavily and when you come out from other end no rain at all.
That's really good information. Thank you. I wish I knew this before to tell it in the video because it's a really interesting fact.
@@Dale_Philip You definitely missed that fact about the climate it's really interesting. I am sure you knew the other fact that it was built by British but you din want to bring that up.
@Hawk Who Knows All It looks like there has to always be one asshole who feels he just has to talk shit.
Looks like this one is you.
As Conor McGregor said; "Who The Fuck is THAT Guy"?
As IF you have ever gotten off your couch to do anything but pound on the keyboard like an Orangutan, and get another beer.
Oh, and save your next comment. No one gives a shit.

@@Dale_Philip British engineers have left their impressive mark on various structures across India as well. One of the reasons i developed a favourable view of the British growing up in India, even though my friends would call me a "dafty"!
15 000 km from British , Hollandis, Portugeesis came to my motherland Sri Lanka and slaved our people and plundered our wealth - those days Sinhala and Tamils dont have political problems - after British left they gave also political problem they divided our country
*"Your man doesn't need a tuk tuk. He's got two strong legs"* 😄😄😄
Whoa when that train came by almost as soon as you got off the tunnel, I was just like 😱
That was pretty much my face at the time too hahaha
The first tourist to do à vlog going through a tunnel, that was creepy, what a beautiful country
Yes, the sound of those bats still creeps me out. They were so close as well. 🦇
@@Dale_Philip Damn it was too risky.. I would never do that.
I did this when I was in the forth grade , lucky I am not along
@@buzzniz lucky you were not met with a train. There would be no way back if you meet up with a moving train in the tunnel, as it creates a law pressure region relative to the tunnel surface. Definitely suck in to it..nothing but death penalty. Dale Philip!! you may not try it again...
@@sunethsilva2720 High speed/60-80+mph train? "Maybe".
20mph. not so much/at all.
It would/is still be Freaky, but not death defying. Been there. Freaked that!
Seriously almost shit my pants just watching this video! Probably won't do that myself but glad you did it for us viewers! Keep the videos coming, I love them! :)
Just take a good flashlight and study the train times and you'll be fine..... probably 😂
@@Dale_Philip yes, probably, if you are lucky. Arghh! Stay safe!
i didn't breath all the time you were in the dark tunnel. you are crazy, be careful and be safe buddy.
Seriously that’s scary 🙂
Omg yes!! I feel the same! Rise my adrenalin lol
Dale, you will go down in history as the first person to vlog that journey. 👏🏽👏🏽🧡
Haha too many people vlogging about the same stuff. Gotta find some unique experiences when traveling.
Dale Philip That was a good idea. I’ve never seen Sri Lanka like that before.
Those tunnels were a bit dicey. I figured you lived to tell the tale after seeing the video upload. 😕🙄
You are blessed with a good attitude , and a sense of humour .
12:56 that hit me spiritually 😌...
"There is light....u just gotta keep going"
Hahahaha
That was so brave going through the tunnel, well done, you lived another day. Well timed to miss the train!
I was very lucky, that's all. 😆👍
I’m currently binge watching your old videos cause I miss watching your videos, and WOW - you’re truly are an amazing and brave man, Dale, with no exaggeration.
I doubt any other travelers would do what you did in this video. I really love your courage and bravery for going through the first tunnel. Your spirit is truly very inspiring and admirable!
I usually don’t really fancy travel vloggers cause they often only visit the touristy places instead of showing the true beauty of the country, but you Dale is one of a kind. You’ve helped me a lot in 2020 especially during the lockdown period. I felt like I was traveling the world when I watch your vlogs. Your videos are very informative, spontaneous, and beautiful.
Thank you so much for being one of the reasons why I got through 2020. You may think that this is weird but your videos really did help me go through 2020.
I look forward to be watching more videos from you and I hope that you’ll visit Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia someday and explore the beauty of Malaysia!
Cheers! Happy new year!
you read my mind dale! i was noticing you travel 100% alone in all your videos while you see many youtubers who do similar videos as you but they usually meet up with other friends. you are a true brave man and much respect for what you do. love watching your videos. keep up the great work.
Really great videos. I’ve been too Sri Lanka 4 times and it’s an amazing country.
Thanks Graham mate 👍
This is absolutely fantastic. Great video brother. You're lucky and amazing! Enjoy your life to the fullest. More videos please. Great Job! Cheers!
Thank you for the nice comment brother. Yes, I will have more videos like this one soon. Stay tuned. ☺️👍
God blessed you Dale! I was so worry when you were still walking in the tunnel. You made it out just on time. Thank God you safe. And thumb up for your bravery to hike alone. Beautiful view of the mountain and nature, and thank you for this awesome video.👍🤓
No need to worry Carolyn. I survived for sure otherwise the video wouldn't have been uploaded hahaha
Was there enough clearance on either side of the tracks for you to flatten up against the wall just in case?
Totally bonkers, but such a refreshing vlogger! Love how you weren't phased that you were mere minutes away from having to deal with the train in the tunnel! Solo vloggers are the best, as they have the freedom to wander. I really want to do this myself.
What a fantastic blog. That tunnel crazy tense.
Wtf that scary can you imagine you were few mins late in that dark tunnel and the train is coming. Salute you man.
Been two years and this video still one of my favorites. Ive been hiking railroads around my area for a while and im convinced that this is the best way to hike.
Fantastic views, and amazing viewing! The train tunnel took some balls!! To wander on and on in a great forest with no thought of return!
Nothing ventured, nothing gained my friend.
Most of the tracks were laid by Scottish engineers in Sri lanka. The Highlands of Sri Lanka have a close connection to Scotland. Try the local saysage called lingus it was made with the haggis in mind .
Brilliant. I stayed in a place called Bray in Ohiya which was named after a place in Scotland. Sri Lanka has an interesting history. 🏴🇱🇰👍
True. And most of the tea plantations were also owned by Scotsmen (eg:-George Stuart who belonged the famous Adisham bungalow)
Bloody hell Dale, im from Sri Lanka and i don't think even a person in that area has done something like this. You are truly a born traveller mate. 😅❤
Oh man, this was the craziest hike I've ever witnessed 🙏 It was spectacular indeed!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wow! This brings back memories of an awesome hike I did almost 20 years ago with some of my crazy friends on the same railway track.
We trekked from Haputale to Ohiya . It looks like nothing has changed for all these years apart from those new concrete sleepers on some part of the track. Now I've seen this video I really wanna do that again. 😆
The best Vlog on Sri Lanka by far. Loved it all the way through. Keep up the good work. Stay safe
Love how you show and tell the details of a country, it makes me think I was there too. The food videos and trains are really great!
This older video needs to blow up.
Dark train tunnel , the bats , no light at the end, no water. Insane.
Wow I am speechless. It must have felt absolutely invigorating to hike along the railway with those sublime views and splendid greenery. There's something so magical about this place, almost as if you have entered a different time.
I really enjoyed that trek. And it's an experience that's kind of unique as far as foreigners visiting Sri Lanka are concerned.
This is more scary than a horror movies!! I hope u always be okay, keep safe Dale. Really scared when i see you enter the tunnel, its really dangerous!
you are perfect symbol to teach sri lankens to how travel sri lanka with low cost and enjoy the nature. thanks for visit sri lanka and please come again. I watched all your videos those are very helpful to anyone travel sri lanka safely. thank you again......
Great video! One of the best from your channel , i am surprised it doesn’t have million views
I just found your channel like 3 days ago and I’m in love.. binge watching all vids lol. Please continue making them after the lock down
And if you visit India again any sooner please consider northern hill stations too they’re beautiful. Nanital is one of the most beautiful hill station we got!
You have no fear Dale. You're not stupid either. That's why God looks after you.
@Dale Philip - Great and adventurous trip you had by walking along the railway tracks. Going through that tunnel very bold and at the sametime very dangerous. Be safe my friend.
Dale, another wonderful experience!! Felt like I was there! WOW! Thank you for doing this video!! Scenery is insanely good! Commentary the best! You got it all!!
Thanks my friend. I want to make more videos like this one!
Dude holy sheep! That tunnel scene really messed up :D Awesome work, mate! Hope I could bump into you someday in some random cities. Thanks for sharing your videos and stories!
Exploring the railway tunnel was absolutely insane but at 21:53 it would've been cool to investigate the abandoned building.
does dale look like a bum to you to be exploring wee abandoned places
Good vid, Dale. Interesting vid. Much love from The States.
Hi you are wonderful
I’m a Srilankan
I love to see my country by you
Thanks
Dale you are the true modern day adventurer! Thanks for the videos
Awesome videos Dale and welcome to our island home. You are a grrrreat sport, to enjoy and then showcase to the world our humble nation. You take us to the back of beyond, places I never knew existed. Quite a lot to watch but I am enjoying every video. That tunnel adventure had me in a cold sweat! Champion!
It's my pleasure 😊👍

OMG That was so nervracking to watch!! You are so brave! Love your videos
I don't know how I missed this greatest and boldest attempt by dale ,before a year
This is the video that made you my favorite travel vlogger!
Risked meeting a train in the dark tunnel, being the first man to contract coronavirus a year before it became a thing, in a hot climate with no water....all in good humor 😂
Your the most coolest person mate love to meet u some day😎😎
Going through your older videos is great, these videos really make me want to visit these places you never think about going to. I doubt i would have gone through that tunnel, i was worried watching it sat at home never mind doing it myself lol
For the past week ive watched almost all your vids ima 27 year old man from ny & Your vids are soooo interesting man much respect love the channel 💪
Man, I needed to fast forward the video while you were walking through that tunnel 😲 hearing the train honk would be the worst nightmare at thar moment weeeeeew. You are amazing, hope to see you travel here in the Philippines soon 😉❤️
Mate I was scared for you when you went through that tunnel,, omg imagine if you were a bit slower and that bloody train entered the tunnel while you was in there, wow you made my heart beat faster then brother, respect.. all the way from Crewe Cheshire England
This is super tense. Great vid Dale x
You are crazy man....😂😂walking trough the tunnel...It's a nice experience..👍👍
Yes it's always good to find an experience that other tourists don't have. Even if it's walking through a dark tunnel full of bats..... 😂
@@Dale_Philip you better not doing that again pls. thats super dangerous
A new word 'Chancer' added to my vocabulary with a real Example! Thanks Dale!
The tunnel hike was incredibly scary. You're really brave enough to do that. Great job.
I have never seen a vloger going through risky places like that, proud of you dale!
Dale, Enjoyed all of your Vlogs. I myself haven't traveled out of Colombo at all even though I've lived in Sri Lanka. Your Vlogs aren't 'Generic Sri Lankan Travel Videos'. You don't spend much and you make the best out of what you have. As a Local traveler I recommend your Vlogs to Sri Lankans who are eager in exploring the country. Hope you return and cover more! Thank You Mate! Cheers!
Thanks my friend. 😃👍
Thank you so much Dale for visiting and promoting the beauty of our motherland . Being a Sri Lankan I feel ashamed of myself for not being able to do what you have been doing. Take care and may the blessings of the triple gem be with you.
Bro really you are insane to go in that tunnel... Even the locals wouldn't dare to enter there... Hopefully you got out without any injury..... Thank God man... Love from TamilNadu💗
Damn, you are so energetic , brave and fun to watch! Love from Sri Lanka.
Thank you. Sri Lanka is a nice place for me to burn off all my excess energy. :)
Wow! That was so close! luckily you were already outside the tunnel! Brave man!
This walk is great! Yes! YOLO! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Oh man, that timing with the tunnel and the train, you were incredibly lucky lol. Not sure if you would have survived in that tunnel lol. Be safe man.
I literally hold my breath when you get in the dark tunnel! Thats really scary! You are really brave dale!
Dale, your energy and adventure is impressive!! Awesome video! I hope you’re recovering from your sprained ankle. We need you back on the road! 😉 Get well soon 😘
watching this about 3 yrs late...ur totally bonkers dale ! ive got others in my house hooked onto your videos now ! love your sri lanka series !! u crazy adventurous Scot! 😆😆
That was a really ballsy move to hike along the railway track, specially the bridge part. Thank you for such an entertaining video
Oh boy you were lucky and what an experience ... keep it up bro ...
Your videos always have an interesting bit. May it be eating kottu, enjoying a wonder bar while watching village women fight, or simply walking through a creepy bat invested tunnel...... Just love it n the additional Scottish accent and the humor makes your very unique.
Hi Dale,
well , I finally took a breath at 14:34!!
FYI; I don't like Dark, Narrow and/or tight spaces (Claustrophobic), Bats (FK Bats) , and with no R leg, I can't run fast!!!!!!!!!!!
Back when I was a kid and did hike the train tracks, (literally) putting your ear to the track can alert you to an oncoming train from some distance.
I'm not one to ignore adventure though.
At your age (mid 20's?) in the mid 70's, I'd been hitchhiking for 10 years, back and forth across the USA, and had started my Motorcycle racing adventures.
Ending in my mid 30's, with 8 years of road racing, and finally earning podium finishes (with my own hand built motorcycles) in 500 Grand Prix.
You Sir, however, are living life today, as I did then.
Good on you.
With all the "Snowflakes" in the news and spiting BS all over the place, I was wondering if there were any REAL men (and women) left on the planet.
This kind of stuff (ie real life adventure), will define your life.
I just wish I'd had the video gear to record my exploits like you are doing now.
I, now @ 70 yr old (with 1/2 a million miles of 2 wheeled adventure under my ever expanding belt), despite being disabled, build and ride eBikes/scooters and am learning/ investing in Li-ion battery technology.
I "like" Brave Dave, Tobe the Hobo (RIP), and all those who adventure into the great beyond, but you are now my/the NEW Favorite adventurer.
Oh, and good instinct with that Sri Lanka Scammer. Just shake him/them off earlier would be my advise.
I realize that "in the moment", it's tough to improvise, but when you passed that cop, if you'd said, "please tell this guy to take a hike" (which I bet you'll do next time), you'd have saved yourself more hassle and alerted the cops to that scammer (unless they are part of the scam!) ;-)
I've just now liking and subscribing.
Just please don't kill yourself for the sake of adventure.
Be cool and have fun.
cheers

PS; with all I said above, my response to those who said what I did was dangerous;
So, WTF are YOU going to do, sit on the couch all your life?
FK that!!!!!!!!!!
I see a long, fun and adventurous life ahead of you Dale. Go for it!!!!!!!
Thanks mate. Every day is an adventure. I also find this current snowflake generation absolutely ridiculous by the way. 😆
You are the best dale.I started watching you videos recently and every single video is awesome and that is how to travel should be
i totally agree! SOLO is the best 'Im feeling grand after that dump in the station!"
That bit in the tunnel Dale!😂😂.....the bats missed out on a nice Scottish dinner 😂😂...great video dude!
ALWAYS meeting friendly people because YOU are a polite and friendly man...., man !!!
Lovely brother. Great choice to walk along the tracks..
You are very brave to be able to go through such a dark place. you made me even more impressed Mr. Dale
Wow pattipola.great location.i spent 2 months there.my father worked in pattipola railway station.such a wonderful location
Now that tunnel was SCARYYY!!! af... Still u got me there with that grubby railway Tunnel water....😂😂😂 Wish you more such lovely adventures... Tc
Your adventures keep getting better and better.
You'd be the only Scotsman who'd be confident to walk through that dark tunnel .. Great hike..Awesome 😁😁👏🏻👏🏻
This was awesome I'm pretty sure you are the 1st one who did something like this
I always carry loads of water. Anxiety does that to you 😂
I could feel the tension walking through that tunnel but again what an amazing view. You just have to take it all in and realise how lucky you are to see such beauty whilst others are back home slogging it out, groundhog style.
Loving the videos. Keep them coming 🙏
I took loads of water but after a 7 hour train journey without air conditioning I drank it all. Should have stocked up at the train station but my mind was on finding a proper toilet as the one in the trains is basically just a hole in the floor. Not that the one at the station was much better hahaha
Dale this was fabulous to watch thank you
Thank you for the video and for the experience thru your video, I was worried for your life when you walk thru the tunnel and the bridge, man you are crazy traveller dude! all power to you!
Don't worry. I survived to upload the video so you know I didn't die in there. 😅
haha thats true, but always be safe! :)
Wow Dale that was quite a trip. I wish I could have been there to experience that hike. Perhaps I 'll give it a go one day before I pass on to the next life. Thanks again for everything.
What a super adventure, need to appreciate, but please take care while doing these types of adventures dale.
Fantastic mate,amazing journey!

I would say this is one of your best vlogs👍🏻
And ....the railway hike😍it is the best👍🏻
You are one heck of a tourist mate!! You have my respect 😁
Yer man is an absolute legend for doing this epic trek ...mere mortal tourists would have just turned back after seeing no light at the end of the first tunnel and the sound of those bats .
Glad you appreciate :)
Thanks for this wonderful video and sharing your experiences, very interesting.
Another great vlog, awesome views.
And another great comment from Warren. Thanks man.
I think no is going alone in that Tunnel. we are lucky enough to watch what you have captured by GoPro. Even the train driver got confused seeing a person in this location. That is the most beautiful place where you can directly see Bandarawela town. Anyway tnx for bringing those adventures.
I really enjoy your vids bro keep it up regards from Malta 🇲🇹
You da man mate! Always positive and enjoying life!!
Hats off to you Dale...your walk thro' the tunnel..requires some guts.
Thanks to those bats to make you walk faster ... I was at the edge of the sit while watching this video.. awesome man
