Sri Lankan ELEPHANT SAFARI. My Jeep Got Stuck! 🇱🇰

- Out of all the Jeeps in all of Sri Lanka, it had to be my Jeep that got stuck in a stream. Despite this hiccup I did enjoy a nice couple of hours in Minneriya National Park where hundreds of wild elephants live.
Minneriya National Park is located in Habarana and is very close to Sigiriya. It would also easily be accessible from Dambulla or Polonnaruwa.
I went for the 2 hours before sunset, and as you can see from the video there were a lot of Jeeps at that time. You could try to go earlier but then you're in the baking sun for 2 hours.
I paid 3,500 LKR ($19.95 USD / /£15.40) for the Jeep, negotiating down from 5,000 by talking to Jeep drivers directly.
Entrance fees to the park are as follows (for foreigners, much cheaper for locals):
Adult: $15 USD
Child: $8 USD
Jeep: 250 LKR
Service Charge (one charge per vehicle, not per person): $8 USD
Value Added Tax: 15%
Total cost for me as a single person with Jeep and driver was 4,980 LKR ($28.39 USD / £21.91 GBP)

What’s beautiful about going Safari isn’t so much the siting of a leopard, elephant or other exotic animal that one would want to see, but basking in the quiet of the jungle. Absorbing all the sites, the sounds the smells that are totally unconnected to human life. Yeah, once in a while spotting an Elephant is its own magical experience. But even parking in one spot and just waiting so that the jungle is given a chance to welcome and accept you so to speak is quite magical too. It’s just a rare conception that I thought I might draw attention too as it may change out expectations. Love your Sri Lanka series!! Such a good traveler you are
Yes, I would like to do a proper Safari like that. Minneriya is very small and close to popular tourist towns so there's too many Jeeps in such a small area.

The Park with the elephants I liked. Good to see them in the wild and left alone for the most part. The jeep drivers were good and respectful to them too, which was nice to see. I give that Park a big thumbs up on it's Eco-tourism.
Only criticism would be to lower the number of jeeps maybe, but it didn't seem to bother the elephants. With the country being about 90% Buddhists elephants are given a lot of respect usually. Even the domestic ones are very well cared for.
Like in Cambodia you wouldn't have places like Angkor Wat if it wasn't for the work from elephants, they are the work horse of the jungle.
When I went to Sri Lanka for a trip the most beautiful part was upper country, I think that’s what it was called. It was a nice view with beautiful mountains

I only hope that the authorities taking care of these wild-life reservations of Sri Lanka do something about the crazy safari traffic which must have been so much worse 2 months ago…feel bad for the elephants with this many vehicles disturbing their environment. Yes you can tell the elephants are fed up of the Jeeps. Minneriya is a very small national park. I don't know what things are like at the other parks.
I don't know about the elephants but I was getting fed up just seeing that many jeeps jockeying for position, the elephants on the other hand showed a great deal of tolerance...appreciate the respect you showed in all the places you visited...
Wild life of 🇱🇰 😻 I miss it. So nice to see the vehicles being respectful to the animals. Can’t wait for coronavirus to end so I can visit my homeland & go see the wildlife. Soon I hope.

Cool. I like to see the tourists and drivers respecting the animals and giving them space, not littering, not making noise. Sadly, the elephant population in Sri Lanka is threatened by habitat loss as humans continue to turn elephant lands into settlements and farms.

Elephants are majestic creatures.once I saw an injured elephant by the side of a carpet road, perhaps collision with an ongoing heavy vehicle.it was a tragic site to see once elephants fall to ground ,it's quite hard for them to stand up.Elephants are beautiful.Thank you for the volg.

I would like to get stuck on the Moors and Fjords and Loch's of Scotland in a British Land Rover / Range Rover Jeep like the Queen drives ! Amazing One day I wiil get there !
