Hello DAve, I've recently found your channel and have learnt so much about skin tones and how to create and portray them. Thank you for making your teaching available. I'm going to join Patreon when finances allow!
You are very welcome Shirley, welcome to my channel, glad you are finding the videos useful... All the very best with your finances, hope things improve soon for you. 🙏
After your tutorial on this video I watched another one of your video about the colour wheel and I was going to watch it again but it disappeared, I just wondered where I could watch it again. Many thanks sky
I see you have join my patreon membership, thank you . Not sure how that appeared on UA-cam as this colour wheel video is a Patreon video only. Take care 🙏
My mistake sorry I realised it was a video that I watched on your Patreon and not u tube and I re joined. thank you your work is amazing and hoping to follow in your foot steps as art is what I wanted to do as a young child as but I was put on a different path but going to make up for loss time, I’ve made myself a cosy little art room with lots of supplies, I’ve been drawing for a few years now but want to get as much tips as I can. I find Patreon is actually like being in a class room without walking out of my house, technology is amazing. Ps I don’t get out much lol. With love sky
@@skyabbott3817 Thank you Sky for your kind words. Art is such a wonderful way to connect to our souls... it so healing. Great to have your own cosy sacred space to create in. Technology is amazing... would have loved to have what is available back when I was younger. I'm 61 now and loving sharing what I have uncovered over the years. I don't get out much too lol. I love quiet tbh, and I am very happy in my own skin lol. All the very best with your art journey. 😊🙏
@@DavePortersArt yes I am so connected to my soul when I draw, there is so much healing power in Art it is amazing as we are absorbing many colours into your aura as we draw that is why it feels good when we draw also you just get lost in yourself and time is nowhere to be seen as you are in a different Dimention.
David, when you put color to paper I realize that highlights and building up the colors are the main part to show definition`skin tones and shades But how important is it` when bringing out the contours and definition of the face like the cheek,to apply pencil strokes at certain angels, So the way the stroke or lines of colors go down will help the eyes to follow the contours and define or pick up in this case the bulge of the cheek making us see the effect of what has been achieved rather than a flat cheek As I see quite often the way artist apply the pencil to paper, I see the angel they shade at almost gives a 3 d effect Example as the eye ball is a spherical shape then to make it look that shape on a flat piece of paper is it best build up depth , and to put a slight arch in parts to the color shading trying to give almost that bend spherical look ,or like hair to follow the shape by the lines placed down to give the effect to the way the hair is layering, So is it important to do these angels in shading so the parts we want protruding when face is looking at us straight on to capture and defy the depth
Hi Piece... If you was drawing say black and white on toned paper or sketching, going with the direction really helps. I feel you can over think things when it comes to colour and this will block your natural flow and instinct. I just let it all happen without analysing things too much. Thinking too much can really kill natural motivation. This is my take on it... not saying I am right... it is just the way it feels to me. All the very best. Thanks for the comment. 🙏
Thank you so much for your informative videos. I love the video of skin blending with referent make of pastel pencils. I live in Canada and can't afford those expensive pencils from Europe. ;-(
Thank you for your kind words... really sorry to hear the brands are not available in Canada. I would suggest using the same colour combo, should work with any brand, it is all about experimenting. All the very best. 🙏
useful narration; i have noticed that you use the white not just for light and lighter colour but also for building/carving texture along the contour of the particular curve. did i miss something?
Hi there... most of the studies are in Patreon full length and in real-time too. thanks for watching. Check out this link for more details. daveportersart.co.uk/
Hi Dave this was very nice work and a good demonstration of your technique. I’m learned learning quite a bit by listening and watching you work. Of course you know that there are so many colors and even earth tones related to portraiture so your approach to using the primaries is quite effective. I was wondering if you have a tendency to use some of the cooler colors in certain areas of the light side in receding areas and if you use other colors in the portrait besides the ones you mentioned.
Thank you for the kind words Mark, thrilled you are getting value from watching my videos... I do sense the temperature, chroma, value... if some colour is cooler I just add blue and the cold red (Alizarin Crimson) So I tend to keep the colours simple... I studies how some the Old Masters mixed their colours around 30...40 years ago and have stuck with the same colour choice ever since. I use the same colours for water colour and Oil painting. It seems to work across all mediums. All the very best to you. 🙏
Hi Juul, Just got to try it out and see what happens, you could do it over grey so cant see why it is not possible. What I have see of the Verdaccio technique, like a little un natural tbh. all the very best. 🙏
Hi Kenneth... similar... I don't use black in the skin tones like the zorn palette. Burnt Umbre and ultramarine blue then yellow ochre, vermillion and white. I researched some of the old masters oil painting techniques around 40 years ago. Stayed with this simple pallete idea since then. I have developed my Pastel technique using the same principles. Thanks for watching 😊🙏
2 Peter 3:10. The signs have been shown. Christ Jesus died so that we could be saved from the wages of our sin, so that we could walk in the path of righteousness that God has set before us in His name.

Thank you for your answer Dave. It is accurate as well as honest and helps me realize that I’m pretty much on track.
Also how can you tell if a color say red, is warm or cold. I know there are reds with a blue tone, so is that a cool red?
warm red as more yellow in it, and cold red has more blue in it. 😊🙏
What kind of paper do you recommend especially for beginners on a fixed income? New subscriber and caching up.
Which country do you live in Paula? 😊🙏
Hello Dave, I send you an email but maybe it’s in the spam box. But.. Is it also possible to really work color by color on a face? like Verdaccio?
Hi Juul, Just got to try it out and see what happens, you could do it over grey so cant see why it is not possible. What I have see of the Verdaccio technique, like a little un natural tbh. all the very best. 🙏
Sir which papers do you use?
Pastelmat 🙏
yeah its a dry version of Zorn Palette
