Big John, master of the Telecaster left us far too soon. David is far and away the finest lyrical steel picker. He understands how words and vocals are the tune and uses picked strings to substitute sung words and manages it seamlessly. His timing and rarely duplicated technique leaves him far above other steel players and he never uses the same licks deeper into the tune. He always leaves me in a special place. I wish I could meet him and shake those gifted hands of his. Thank you Dave.
So sorry to hear that John passed. I've learned so much watching him play on these videos. I hope you can take comfort in knowing that he (and you) will be watched and listened to for a very long time... it's not about the views or subs. It's about the music. Rest In Peace, John. God Bless you, David.
Nice to see a new one from both of you, but very sad that this is one of the last ones we will ever see of these two greats together. I just heard about John's passing 5 minutes ago and deeply saddened by it .... I've spent MANY hours enjoying Dave and John playing together. My condolences to all his friends and family ... I didn't know him personally, but he seemed like a great, fun and very talented guy to be around and I will truly miss him.
Yes ! My favorite guitar duo back together again ! Even though Dave is amazing in solo, I missed the chemistry between John and him. I never get tired of listening (and watching) both of you play together. Your spin on classic songs is always interesting and inspired. Thank you for taking the time to record this and sharing it with us. Cheers from Montréal, Québec, Canada.
Nice job! Lots of great music came from Saginaw Michigan. Brice, from Uncle Dirty's Sound Machine in Kalamazoo, rest his soul, recorded many bands in the 60's & 70's from the Saginaw area. One of my favorite Rock bands, Bryon, Paul and Thomas was from Saginaw. I still have them on Reel to Reel, for those of you who know what a Reel to Reel is... Glad to hear "Great Sounds from Saginaw" again!
You guys fit together musically like a hand in an old favourite glove. Just brilliant. I know you have spent time arranging and practicing but it sure don't look like it. It seems it just comes naturally. Love the facial expressions John :-).
Hi , Great to see you two people back together again, even for a short while only. You mix very well together, and your music is exellent as usual. Nice work:)
Gosh AwMighty! ! ! ! ! ! That is so awesome. please do this with other similar old country tunes. This is soooooo excellant .!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thanks sooo very much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Dave, A super job on an old favorite, and your new helper on the guitar sounds great also. Thanks for sharing these great sounds with us and have a fabulous week end. Hugh
love saginaw michigan been there many many times i love the way these guy did the song written by bill anderson recorded by lefty frizzel in 1963 i had a girl friend in saginaw county at the time i bought her the little 45 rpm record of it i wonder if she still has it she lived in a little town 15 miles west of the city of saginaw on highway M 46
I love your music Dave, have listened and played along with all your video uploads.. but,to be honest I've really missed, John , not being around playing his guitar, I was beginning to think something awful had happened to him, you two play well together. please tell John I love his style. and hope to see him playing music with you more often...keep up the great music guys.. Roger. from northeastern Vermont.
Saginaw Michigan was written by Don Wayne and Bill "Whispering Bill" Anderson - originally recorded by the late great Lefty Frizzell, Lefty took this song all the way to #1 and this was his last #1 song before his passing. Many people, including Lefty's brothers, David and Allen, have covered it....
SO Sad watching and listening to "the dynamic duo" together again..... for the last time, during John's visit back to the UK from his new home in TX.... knowing that only a year & 4 months later he would be "gone". His wife should have taken better care of him in the food department to help him keep his weight off.... he was doing good and had lost a lot of weight before he married her. Very sad to lose such a gifted and talented Tele player.... easily one of the best of all time. RIP John... we all miss you greatly... and especially so, when paired up with David!! : (
Oh David.............so sorry to hear of John's passing. Wow.........just saw this item tonight. What a Guitar player. Please except deeepest sympathies from lowly picker in Sydney N.S. Canada.
I'd love to hear you play a steel version of what's a guy gotta do to get a girl in this town by Joe Nichols, I love your playing, cheers from Minnesota USA
hey not bad and great to see my Tele getting some serious use. You two are just the dogs b's! My privilege to know you as mates and have played some great music together
Wonderful. John was clearly picking with his right ring finger every so often. I've learned in the last few years it's called hybrid picking. I'm partial to it. I thought I'd invented it in 1958 or 59 and never saw anyone else do it. I'd have loved to meet him. (Another I've seen recently is Stuie French from Tasmania.)
I listen to you every night before bedtime. I sleep good with your music in my imagination and dreams.
I could watch/listen to these two all day. Still hard to believe John is gone…what a loss
