A picture is worth a thousand words and a video is worth a million! I just bought one of these and this video walked me through where things are that I need to service! Thanks for making this video. Very helpful.
So far this is the best outboard tear down I've found online. I just got a grady white with a motor that is going to need work so thanks for the walk through.
Just got a 2001 200HP OX66 and having bogging issue and chasing fuel pumps and injectors. This video has helped me learn a lot on how this system works!
@@CatchingColorado Thanks for tip. I went over the entire fuel system sevferal times and even had injectors professionally cleaned. I recently changed the head gaskets and got about 15 hours out of motor before cylinder #6 on top left made loud knocking sound and got stuck 12 miles offshore... Got towed-in for a long day and watching all your re-build videos over again!
I'm not a fishing fanatic but just based on the time and effort you put in this video for us novices, I'm freaking subscribing. you should do more how to videos
As someone who's fairly familiar with motorcycle 2-strokes and automotive 4-strokes, it is WEIRD seeing those two worlds smashed together in an engine like this. I'd love to have a closer look at the ports on this thing. The spacing between the cylinders has got to create some really interesting challenges for the transfer ports on a loop-scavenged engine like this.
Use a supper long needle nose vise grip on the nasty clamp. Once it's stabilized you can wedge the nut into a socket using electrical tape. You can push down on the socket and extention. It will force the threads into the nut. Turn 2 man 2hr cluster into a 5 minute job.
liked the video but was hoping to see exhaust removal, any suggestions on removing these without snapping them all ?? heat, torch, penetrating oil ? mine all seem like they will snap. thanks !
i just got my power head and i'm having problems installing all the electrical back as it should. I wish i saw your video before i removed all the electrical before i got the new power head. now I'm stuck as to install all the electrical correctly..
I know its been 2 years since your video post but I was wondering how much money you had into the rebuild? I know you needed a new crank, gasket sets, O2 sensor, machine shop work , etc. I have a 1999 Ox66 that I bought brand new 23 years ago and spin wrenches on it myself for basic maintenance. Has perfect compression on all cylinders so far. I really like these 2 stroke 200HP and am weighing whether to repower with new engine in case this one grenades or do the rebuild. Thx for the video !
All in, I think about 5k. But a big cost was the crank, another was shipping the block for machining, lastly, I am picky about parts and bought good stuff. You can do it for less. Very easy motors to work on if something ever does happen.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video! I just pulled the head off mine cause cylinder 2 detonated. I assume from a bad injector. I wish the cylinders would come off the block so I didn't have to pull the entire power head. Sure complicates the job.
So what happened did you rebuild it? And if so what was the total damage. I have a 200hp basically same motor 95 psi per cylinder thinking about doing a rebuild. Got a qoute 7 grand. Either that or buy a 4 stroke 30k i think id rather rebuid this one if necessary lol.
other than a new piston, what parts did you replace? any bearings? rings for all cylinders? trying to figure out what parts should automatically be replaced if you go through the trouble to tear an outboard down.
I have this exact same engine and model year 1999. I had my engine blow up on me while using it and had it rebuilt. I paid $5,000 to have it redone over 10 years ago. After wards, I used it but then had to stop using it. Finances got cut when I lost my job and was married so essentially this boat has sat unused for 12 years now. Hard to imagine but it is true. I ran the gas out of it when I first parked it. It ran fine when I stored it but after all this time, what would you suggest I do to get it back up and running? I have never cranked it one time in those years. Thanks for any suggestions.
Just clean out the fuel line, check your plugs, replace filters, and get a good battery on her. If she is hard starting you can use a tiny bit of starting fluid in the throttle body but don't let her get reliant on starter fluid
I am considering buying the exact same kind engine, 99 V200TLRX or I am thinking if I should spend few grand more to get a newer more fuel efficient 4-stroke. What do you think, would you recommend this engine? What are the things I should look for in this engine when going to inspect it at the seller?
I think a newer engine is always a good choice but these engines are practically bulletproof. You need to check compression on each cylinder, I would look at the fuel filter and make sure the ring at the bottom isn't floating (indicates water). Drain a tiny bit of lower unit fluid and make sure it doesn't look frothy or milky (water in lower unit). Make sure it trims up and down well and with ease. Always water test the engine if possible
I would like to know how myself. My mechanic said it can probably be done. I need to change one piston, rings and hone the cylinder. But I see when you remove the balancer there is a plate that looks like it bolts on the crankcase and the powehead making it impossible to remove the crankcase without removing the engine.
kracker1977 Hi ....Unfortunately I was not present when my mechanic removed these pistons , but he definitely did the job without removal of the engine and the total job was done within a day for each piston !! Apologies for the lack of help...
Congrats on the engine rebuild! If I was you I would disconnect the Precision blend system on that engine and just mix the gas in the tank! My first Yamaha 200 blew up because of this problem and so I immediately disconnected on the one I have now and haven't had any problems at all! Good luck fishing and congrats on the rebuild she really ran good!!
If the oiler goes out these Yamaha outboards it will over oil and smoke like tar kettle. It won’t blow up. I’ve been running a 2003 Yamaha 150 VMax for 19 years. You have to do regular service on them and not wait for something to tare up. They have a small filter on the bottom of the oil revisor that I change every year. Service is the key to making any outboard motor last.
Get a Holley electric fuel pump with a regulator, remove and block the ports on the diaphragm pumps. I did that on my Johnson and never looked back. Too many moving parts that can fail.
22:40 are those vacuum lines or re-circulation lines leading back to the intake manifold? i have the exact same ones on my 3.0 liter looper evinrude and they have check valves in them. awesome video!

Thanks Sean! I needed this video two years ago so I thought I had to be the guy to make one.
How did you adapt the engine stand to fit the block?
Long hex bolts, then tons of washers between the block and the stand. This helped make a tight connection and gave room for other components.

Carbon build up on rings after 20 years of use. Or just a random detonation
