    I rode 20,000 miles in 6 years on a Cannondale hybrid. Big climbs and everything. One great upside was that I gained a lot of cycling experience in a comfortable position and saved my back for the much more aggressive bike I have now. It also had a "weighted baseball bat" effect, my light bike now almost feels weightless.

    • @peggz223
      @peggz223 4 дні тому +1

      True to the ‘weighted baseball bat’ effect! Rode an inexpensive Poseidon Dropbar X gravel bike right at 25lbs, upgraded to a carbon Giant gravel bike just under 21lbs and the weight difference while climbing is definitely noticeable. Not a game changing factor, though it absolutely helped on long ascents

      @@peggz223 It's nice that after the weight of a couple bottles of water, food and whatnot I'm still lighter than I was before. I think I feel it the most on longer rides or headwinds, and of course makes those climbs much more enjoyable.

    fun note actually, got hit by a car about a month ago, with cargo bibs on and phone with case inside my bib short pockets. phone and case actually acted like a skid plate for the side of my thigh, got road rash on my shoulder and elbows but none on the thigh or legs, though theres definitely a bit of material gone from the case, and the bib pocket is a bit shredded.

    • @peggz223
      @peggz223 4 дні тому

      Well!…I suppose that makes sense, doesn’t it? Stiff, smooth plate (phone with case) reduced sliding friction to skin.

    • @9023gregb
      @9023gregb 3 дні тому

      I know POC has some fabrics advertised as road-rash resistant, but there really should be more. MTB clothing has protection but road cycling is just a single mm thick piece of material.

    Hybrid bike - underrated, because I use it for the shopping, touring (including trips to the Netherlands) and general cycling (including off road forest trails). Hybrid bikes are the do it all work horse of cycling and loads of fun. I have a Giant Roam 0 disc complete with a topeak rack on the back, love it almost as much as my Mountain Bike.

    Alt bars + hybrid = comfort and more speed over flat bars IMHO. Allows for a more natural hand position.

    Hybrid bikes are great for short trips around town. Add a pannier rack, and it's the perfect errand and work commuter. I once did a 80k ride on my commuter. Never again: it took a week for my hands and wrists to stop aching.

    • @zwicker5585

      Hybrids should just come with an alt bar type of thing. Flat bars arent great for comfort but it does provide much better control

    RE Cargo bibshorts, agreed criminally underrated, I make sure that all my bibs have pockets before getting them. That said on keys in those pockets and falling, I had a close pass last year that pushed me off the road edge, and I went down hard in to the lane and landed on my keys. Pretty bad bruising but the keys didn't actually puncture me. That said, keys go in the bar bag/seat bag now.

    My son loves to ride and commute by bike. First of all, he is a total party pace rider. He doesn't care about going fast at all. (I doubt he is my child. I think he was switched at the hospital. LOL!) He only like hybrids. I did take an old Cannondale MTB frame, changed the brakes to work with 700c wheels, put on some 32c tires, a 1x Box groupset, and a wild custom paint job. He now has a hybrid that is very light and he absolutely loves it. Hybrids do have a place and I am glad they exist.

    While I love the look of the (right color) tan walls, they often test slower in rolling resistance than the black wall. Thinking specifically GP 5000s tested by Bicycle Rolling resistance. Black walls were several watts faster per tire.

    I started on a hybrid carbon flat bar Fuji Gran Fondo 1.1. It was a brilliant bike. I eventually upgraded the bike with Winspace Hypers, Conti 5000s, tubes, saddle etc... and it ended up a feather over 8kg. Whenever it went in for a service the mechs would always ask about it. It also had grips on the side so you weren't fixed to the same position. As a middle-aged fella it also helped me shed some timber and graduate to drop bar bikes, and the old Fuji ended up on a Wahoo Kickr. It was a pretty quick ride. Might update the drivetrain to wireless Sram one day as the old one is knackered and my kids might benefit from it. However, not all hybrids are heavy and slow. Get one with a light frame and upgrade over time and it'll just get better!

    Flat bars aren't inherently uncomfortable ... The straight with barely any sweep flat bars most hybrids come with are. They pinch the wrists and cause all kinds of problems. Bars with more sweep and some down sweep put the wrists in a neutral position and can be ridden for hours. Inner bar ends with swept bars are a great combo. Two wrist neutral positions. One more upright with superior control and vision and one akin to riding on the hoods and both with access to the brakes and gears.
    The biggest problem with most hybrids are that they are heavy, boring and badly specced. Exactly as exciting as an entry level road bike, mountain bike or gravel bike. The mild cheddar of the bike world. But it needn't be so. Best thing to do is build your own ... Also underrated ;)

    Bib shorts with pockets on correctly sized people vs clothing the pocket is mid thigh ish. But for me who is short and fat, having to wear XL, means the bottom of the pocket is where my knee is which can push my phone up which makes me paranoid it will fall out and i keep pushing it down throughout a ride.
    Many XL bib shorts are too long for shorter wider people. For some reason, clothing manufacturers think if you're fatter you're also taller and vice versa, if you're skinny then you are shorter. I wish they either they had various lengths for each size or a standard length for all sizes.
    Many bib shorts the ends goes over my knees because I'm short with short legs but wide that i need to wear a bigger size.

    tan sidewalls - overrated
    Francis can measure them and they can be as light as you want, they still look terrible. What does look better than plain black is the red highlighted 'threads' on a conti grand prix 4 season
    building your own bike - underrated
    Although it can be difficult (says me who's never tried), you can get your bike exactly the way you want it, and that's brilliant.
    hybrid bikes - underrated
    They are accessible, versatile, and can actually be really fun. My commuter bike is a hybrid so I don't spend too long riding it, but that's in the ideal user window. Pretty much all of them will take any rack and bag you throw at them too.
    cargo bibs - no comment
    I'll gladly try them if there's some discounted next time I'm looking at kit
    latex tubes - overrated
    I don't race, I'll stick to not having to check my pressures every fifteen minutes, thank you.
    Deep section rims - no comment
    I have enough problems with crosswinds as is.
    Bromptons - overrated
    other folding bikes are available.
    Big graphics - underrated
    Agree with Jimmi.
    "Stealth black" is just boring. What is better than big graphics is actual colours.

      While I agree about tan sidewalls in general. I think this honestly depends on the bike itself. It can absolutely pull a look together. As long as it fits the colour scheme, its fine. Its just another way to express yourself.

    Hybrids probably have put more people off cycling than served as a gateway drug. They're slower than a road bike, they're uncomfortable to ride for any period of time, they often have absolutely crap suspension shocks, they're no better than a gravel bike off road. And if by chance a hybrid does hook you into cycling, you immediately end up buying a purposely built bike to replace it.
    But an actual city bike if you just want to tool about, a road bike, if you want exercise, or a mountain bike if you want to ride in the dirt. Or if you don't know what you want, buy a gravel bike. But don't waste your money on a hybrid.
