My sister didn't want to see this when it came out, so I saw it with a friend and then called her and told her she HAD to see it. I told her this was a kinder, gentler depiction of Mr. Darcy, who is often portrayed as being very cold and arrogant. In this version, he seems, despite being wealthy and handsome, a bit socially awkward and shy and actually vulnerable (as when he admits to Lizzie that he doesn't have a talent for talking to people he doesn't know). You should also recognize that, when Elizabeth chastises him, each time he tries to improve. For example, when she recommends dancing, he asks her to dance at the next ball. When she says he should practice conversation after he admits it's not his strength, he shows up at Charlotte's home and rather endearingly tries to make small talk. When Lizzie expresses her love of walking, we then see him walking instead of riding. He also takes it upon himself to track down Lydia and Wickham and mitigate the scandal of their running away together by basically paying Wickham to marry the girl he's ruined. In the first proposal scene, Darcy criticised Lizzie's family for their improprieties, which, to him, are beneath him. Yet, he willingly involves himself in the Wickham scandal for Lizzie's sake. It's a very different Mr. Darcy than we sometimes get where his faults are over emphasized, and his redemption in Elizabeth's eyes seems less believable. Oh, and my sister absolutely loved this version after her initial reservations!!

When the movie came out, there was a story that the director didn't even want to talk to Keira Knightley to play Elizabeth because he deemed her "too pretty" and Jane's supposed to be the beautiful one in the family. I saw KK on a British talk show where the host asked her about that and she said that they did eventually talk and he said "oh, she's alright", implying that she wasn't too pretty... lol
But apparently they decided to make Elizabeth a little tomboyish to make sure that she wouldn't be competition for being the beautiful sister... I don't know. I love the book so much and I never got the impression that Elizabeth was supposed to be plain. She just has more personality than Jane, so by default Jane becomes the "beauty" of the family.

D'arcy's house, Pemberley, was inspired by (and filmed for this production at) Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. I've been there multiple times, my New Zealand raised eyes agape at the landscaping, gardening, architecture, and art that more than 500 years of ongoing family effort have made on the countryside. The sculpture gallery is all real (apart from the sculpture of Mr D'Arcy.) You ABSOLUTELY should see it for yourself!

The location used for the Bennet house was in the same village I grew up in. It's a lovely place with picturesque grounds set up for tourists. The house isn't actually up for viewing usually but the interior seen in the movie is covering the actual interior as the style wasn't era-appropriate.
Regarding the different UK ending, it ends on Mr Bennet laughing to himself "...I'm quite at my leisure." I hear it was because Austen never had the characters kiss in the novel and it ends with the marriage.
Third thing: while this id an incredibly well-made movie in many ways, I've always particularly enjoyed the wonderful music. It sets the scene so perfectly and is a delight to the ears.

Thank you! - I was going to write that. In fact, IIRC, that's where the book ends, with Lizzie and her father's interview - a very sweet, if low key ending. Maybe JA felt she couldn't write well about the kissing business and the glow of the early days of marriage, because she'd never experienced it for herself..? Although I tend to dismiss the perpetual need of Americans for the standard triumphal ''Hollywood Ending" I must say I did feel a little let down when I first read P & P and we never got the full consummation of the chief protagonists, after such a long, slow build-up!

I loved this reaction to one of my favorite movies so much, and Emily, seeing your visible delight (since I know from your channel here that you do not like most romances!) was so much fun. I really think what sets this "romance" apart is that it is a story and relationship first, and it is so rich and smart and detailed, that we care about the romance because we care about the people.
My personal favorite aspects here are the way it shows Darcy as socially awkward and visibly uncomfortable. He is shy and speaks without thinking, yet he feels deeply and I love the way we see this as the story goes along. Kiera Knightley is just equally wonderful, with a fierce and witty Elizabeth, and I could not love this gorgeous adaptation more. Wonderful reaction from you both!

I personally hate that depiction of Elizabeth lol I see what the directors tried to do there, to show that Pemberley is grandiose but it's not right. It gives the wrong idea, that Elizabeth accepted him on the second proposal for his fortune, which is FAR from it. In the book, she finds irony in visiting Pemberley when if she had accepted to marry Darcy, she could've been the host for her aunt and uncle. And then she remembers sadly that (because of what Darcy said about her family and relations) they wouldn't have been allowed on the grounds of Pemberley. They would've been lost to her. She is actually more interested in what the servants are saying about Darcy, how fair and good a master he is.

    • @Bjjbhcoa86
      @Bjjbhcoa86 3 місяці тому +2

@@JennyferPepin It gives exactly that feeling in the film, "the irony that she would be the hostess", only issue is that film cuts off the servants speaking very highly of Darcy and that impressing Elizabeth, wish they also put that.

I've seen that film so many times and I've never read her giggle as "pained." I never even considered someone could perceive it that way.
I read it as the nervous and spontaneous giggle that people let out when they're overwhelmed or shocked. To me it's a natural reaction for someone from a modest home being confronted with an almost absurd amount of wealth. Like seeing such an enormous estate was a surprise and shock to her senses.

The Bennets are far from poor, but they're not rich either. They are gentry, same social class as Bingley and Darcy. Technically the Bennets are somewhere in the middle of the class. While Darcy is at the very top of that social class. His mother being nobility, so he could petition to become a Lord.
So him having issues with her status, especially since mrs Bennet is from the lower class, is a huge deal.

Pride and Prejudice kinda grew on me over the years because i loved Downton Abbey and Pride and Prejudice is a bit of a prequel of sorts in terms of social politics of english society. These women were FIERCE to marry and spare themselves a spinsters life. The social etiquette and situations are almost like a battlefield itself trying to nab the best man possible to avoid being poor on the streets since Women couldn't Inherit anything from their families until the 1900's. So if you want more like this but a 1910's flavor i recommend reacting to Downton Abbey, turn of the century and the gilded age is a fascinating watch.

So good to re-watch this with you ,great reaction as always , please check out Remains of the Day with Emma Thompson Anthony Hopkins as servants in 1930s England and the simmering unspoken attraction between them in that "stiff upper lip"age , most of the second half had me shouting at the screen "ffs one of you say something, open up" lol. Would love to see and hear Emily react to this beautifully made film so well written with a great cast, and see what gems Matthew or Andrea can dig up in their notes, THANK YOU ,keep em coming and DLTBGYD .

Yo Pip! Maybe Mr. Collins has a cousin for you! In addition to all the good things you mentioned I have to put a plug (as if she needs it lol) for Jane Austin. She is a great writer and basically invented the character of the smart, feisty, snarky, young lady. If you enjoy Emma Thompson you should really see 1993's Much Ado About Nothing. At the time she was married to director Kenneth Brannagh and they worked on it together. It has a cast that is beyond stellar; Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton, Brian Blessed, Keanu Reeves, and (in her first appearance on her Oxford Break) Kate Beckensdale.

OK Emily gushing about romance is something I never thought I would see, Me personally I prefer the BBC mini series because it's closer to the book but the movie is very well made and acted. Andrea definitely has to come back for Sense and Sensibility it has the best cast ever, Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant.

At this point Emily has to realise she doesn't hate romance, she just hates bad movies. There are several movies that can be considered romantic but are so in a more dramatic and tragic sense, like the 19th century notion of romance. It's not all unicorns and rainbows, sometimes romance is very dower and sad (see Wuthering Heights). Not Jane Austen, though. Her stuff is usually much more joyful, while still being elegant and clever. I'm not a big fan of romance either, but some stuff is well made and compelling enough to grab you in other ways. This movie is a good example of it.

Emily Brontë is a different author, she wrote Wuthering Heights. Jane Eyre is a different novel, written by Emily's sister, Charlotte. Pride and Prejudice is written by Jane Austin. In any case, both authors were Victorian era successes. 😂

This is the original Rom Com. And Jane Austin wrote this for her sister whose fiance died serving in the military before their wedding. Jane wanted to give both herself and her sister Cassandra their happily ever after. In a book as it had not turned out that way for them in real life. I think why certain characters irk me so much in the story, is that we know people just like them. Jane Austin was really good at this. I 100% loved your reaction to this movie. You read people very well.

My ex wife got me into the show years ago, because she was a Colin Firth nut. My kid would have been named Pemberly if I hadn't fought tooth and nail against it. We ended up settling on using names from the girls. I think you'd dig the other Jane Austin movies and even Jane Eyre. It was nice to see you giddy over the sappy parts.

Also try the 1995 version of Persuasion which is the most understated and intelligent adaptation of Jane Austen. But nearly all the BBC adaptations of Austen have merit.

Just a bit of a Ted talk about the finances and Bennet family status at the time 😊
The Bennet family was quite rich (even though not as much as Mr. Darcy). They were very much in the let's say upper 5%, but like at the very bottom of the list plus Mr. Bennet marrying a not noble woman brought the status of the family even lower. Mr. Bennet's annual income would be about $160,000 today (while Mr. Darcy's would be about $15,500,000 - so he was basically like royalty). The problem was that once Mr. Bennet would have died, all of his money would go to Mr. Collins, save for about $4,000 a year for each miss Bennet. Their lifestyle would have changed drastically and it's debatable whether or not they would have been able to survive (considering the lifestyle they were used to) - and there were almost no options for women back then. If only one sister married rich, she and her husband would then take care of all the other members of the Bennet family. That's why Mrs. Bennet was pushing so hard on the marriage front and honestly, even though she's loud and pushy and annoying, she meant well and at that time it was even desirable for the parents to think of securing their children's financial situation first. Mr. Bennet seems great in the movie, but in the book he just liked Lizzie, trash talked most of the other members of the family, didn't do anything to secure his daughters' future until it was too late and realized all of his mistakes and errors, but wasn't even sorry for like more than a few hours
I love this movie and think it's a great introduction to Jane Austen, but it's not even in my top 10 Austen adaptations 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think my favorite thing to see during the rewatching, is Darcy’s state of dress as the story progresses. When we meet him, he’s lock, stock, and barrel buttoned up to the chin, he’s very proper and reserved. Upon meeting Elizabeth, he slowly starts to adopt her less formal manner, likely unconsciously, but by the time we see him walking through the morning mist(mirroring how Elizabeth walked to see her sister in the beginning), he is(for that era) practically in his skivvies. He’s in informal garb, his stock(white cloth tied around his neck) is missing entirely, and his shirt is unbuttoned. He’s reached peak butthole-unclenching, and he is matching Lizzie’s energy and openness. Chef’s kiss🤌🏼💋

Now you have the other Jane Austen movies to watch: Persuasion ( *not* the newest version, it's not true to the characters or stories; I suggest 2007 series), Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Mansfield Park (1999 is good), and Northanger Abbey. I do suggest the series versions rather than movies, if there's a series available. *Definitely* watch the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice series; it fills in a lot of gaps in the movie (though the movie is absolutely wonderful and gorgeous).
