I dare say Jane Austen is NOT romantic...She understands and describes human nature, the society of her time, and she is always deep,witty,true...I think you will love her books which are so much more than love stories Actually she is considered one of the best writers ! Enjoy !❤

It is romance story set in less fortunate times - albeit her characters are more often than not fairly well off through either birth or circumstance.
Consequently while it does show SOME society of her time, it's markedly removed from the vastly more dire circumstances of the average Dickens novel.
Unless those details have simply been excised from all screen adaptations itt's plain to see that Jane Austen was not at all familiar with the harsher realities of the world beyond her social strata.

One of my favorite movies of all time, the ending with Darcy showing up at dawn and Elizabeth all radiant and in love when she sees him, still gets me all emotional and teary-eyed up to the final scene with the dad. Great movie =)

This is my favorite movie adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Great reaction! Sense and Sensability (1995) with Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, and Hugh Grant was also very good. Mansfield Park (1999) with Frances O'Conner is another Austen favorite of mine. I would love to see a whole series of reactions based on Jane Austen. Not just her books but there are movies about Jane herself that are quite good.

The 1995 version of Persuasion is pretty decent too, also film length.
It's an early work with Ciaran Hinds long before he got his big break as Julius Caesar in HBO's Rome series.

This production filmed Mr Darcy's home "Pemberley" at the site that was Austen's real life inspiration for it: Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. I moved to the UK nearly 20 years ago (Salford, Greater Manchester) and of all the beautiful and historic sights I've seen, I keep going back to Chatsworth. It's beeen called the greatest private palace in England and it does not disappoint. The grounds reflect 500 years of continuous work and planning. The interior is the family home of the Dukes of Devonshire, and the family has collected centuries worth of junk (while being fabulously rich.) The sculpture gallery is real, in one small corner of an opulent wonderland. If you're ever in the area it's well worth a visit!

Also could have been inspired by Chawton House which was inherited by Jane Austen's brother.

Two film recommendations that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. 1) The Jane Austin Book Club, it has lots of drama and romance as they read Jane’s novels! 2) Bride and Prejudice. There is one thing that you misunderstand is about Mrs. Bennet (the mother) being happy that Lydia was getting married. The money in the letter about $100 a year is the money the parents have to give Mr. Whickmen to pay for Lydia’s expensive for the year. It was a custom in Britain for a long time. So the money is not going the parents at all it’s the other way around.
The mother was happy that Lydia got married is because if people found out that Lydia ran way and slept with a man without being married it would ruin her reputation literally forever. But not just Lydia but the whole family because if Lydia has no moral so does the family. So none of the daughters would be able to get married because their family reputation is gone. Pretty much destroying the family and being outcasted for everything.
So yes Lydia getting married before anyone in town knew she ran off was a great blessing.

    • @mnomadvfx

Most of those are TV series with 2 or more episodes.
Also Belgravia is not based on any novelist of the 19th century as with the rest, it's just Julian Fellowes (aka Downton Abbey's creator).
Plus Becoming Jane is a fictionalised account of Jane Austen's life before she wrote her first novel, rather than an adaptation of her work.
IMHO Belgravia is a bit of Vanity Fair mixed with Downton - it seems like Fellowes's attempt at being edgier, more Dickens esque, but many of his same writing tropes seep through onto the screen.
There are definitely better picks like Little Women to choose from.

For Jane Austen purists, the sight of two characters sharing a kiss in a screen adaptation is enough to set hackles rising. There were no kisses in Austen's novels.
Us public always need kiss and ship people. It’s tiresome.

To add some suggestions for more, here's my top romances list.

    2. Sense and Sensibility (1995)
    3. Beauty and the Beast (2017)
    4. Casablanca (1942)
    5. Groundhog Day (1993)
    6. The Remains of the Day (1993)
    7. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
    8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
About Remains of the Day, Eyes Wide Shut and Eternal Sunshine, while still being about romance at their core all have some very unique perspectives of it. Especially Eyes Wide Shut which have several widely different possible interpretations.

If only we could have all the great, nuanced acting and proper time spent on the story of the 1995 BBC mini series, just with the cinematography and score of the 2005 film.
As much as I truly love the 1995 mini series it looks and sounds horribly dated as TV standards go compared to what BBC do today, they definitely cranked up the quality of their output as the digital revolution helped to bring them more in line with film.
IMHO the 2005 film rushes through the plot to fit it into a 2 hr runtime and it loses all of its subtlety and nuance.
Plus IMHO early Keira Knightley hasn't 1/10th the acting ability that Jennifer Ehle had in 1995.
So often in this film Keira just seems to stare at the camera with a gormless expression fixed on her face that seems far more suited to modeling clothes than acting in a Jane Austen adaptation - you can only argue so far that the runtime prevented her from doing it justice when Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet showed far more in Sense and Sensibility.

I loved that you were so engaged by the story and plan to read the book. Austen’s last four books are among the greatest of English literature, and her first two are also good. It’s a pity you chose this version, which is a complete botch of the book.
Everything that is good in this movie is due to Jane Austen, and everything that is bad, which is considerable, is due to the poor script, strange casting, and bad acting/directing choices. Much of the acting is off key, and the interpolated dialogue and invented little moments are jarringly modern. It is especially amazing that, presented with some of the wittiest dialogue ever composed, the screenwriter chooses to reject it and substitute her own flat phrasing, thereby damaging one of the story’s glorious means of character development (i.e., how the characters speak). Even if everything had been good, it is impossible to do justice to the story in less than 3 or 4 hours.
After seeing all the adaptations, I recommend the 1980 British TV version, adapted in five parts by the distinguished writer Fay Weldon, as the best. The slightly longer, 1995 British TV version is also outstanding.

Modern Americans don't have a clue about the necessity for the Bennet sisters to find a man of means to marry and what their life would be like if they don't...That was a reason why Charlote married Mr. Collins, because married life with him was better than her imminent future unmarried. No welfare state to help her survive...Also, Lydia "living is sin" with Mr. Wickham was a big deal and would have destroyed any possibility of a Mr. Darcy - Elizbeth marriage not to mention the family disgrace.

Jane Austen was a women before her time. The new notion of marrying for love was quite difficult to live by in this day and age where women were seen as means to an end, to be connected to finest families and to bring more wealth to the family. Lydias own dad did not think any man would marry her for less than 100 pound a year, for love though??What is a women worth? It is mother Bennet that definitely personify the suffering with having only doughters and no heir. Mr Collins their cousin is the heir to their estate/family home. The crazy elder biddy that is so engaged in marrying off young women, the women main characters that live quite different lives but does all get entangled from birth with money, security and wealth and the handsome men that chooses to marry for love, even though their family disagree is the plot for many of her stories. So her main subject is love and money not romance as such. that is her wishful thinking, a little bit of escapism.

I have never heard anyone explain the pig in the house and Mrs. Bennett's odd reaction to seeing it's testicles. Is that in the book? Anyone?

If my memory's correct, I don't think there's any pig in the book, and there's definitely no reaction to any testicles by Mrs Bennett 😄

Consider watching Walk the Line, about Jonny Cash. Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix play the lead characters.

I'm a guy and yes I admit I have this movie in my DVD collection. Even though times have changed so much since Jane Austin's day, the story is really timeless because human nature always stays the same. I think one reason it's been so popular is that it's so relatable. People tend to keep their true feelings hidden and are too quick to judge just like in the story. So many relationships never happen because we play games to protect us from getting hurt. I can really relate to Darcy here, with his difficulty in approaching Lizzie, and like him I tend to be reserved with others until I get to know them, and I know what it's like to be misjudged because of it. I'm not as judgmental as he was, but I think a lot of that comes from the time he lived in and the rigid class system in place in England back then.
I think this is the best adaptation of the novel ever done, and I give a lot of the credit to Keira Knightley's performance. She really shows how complicated Lizzie is and makes her change in feeling's toward Darcy very believable. You can see the depth in both her character and Mr. Darcy's and how they both gradually change. The whole cast did well. Donald Sutherland as the long-suffering but even-tempered Mr. Bennett stands out to me as well.
Kamilla, I think you'd really like the 1996 version of "Emma" with Gwenyth Paltrow, and I'd suggest it for your next Jane Austin/romantic movie reaction. It's a little bit lighter fare and really well done.
p.s. I almost watched P & P the other night but passed on it (tends to make me think of a certain someone) but this reaction has inspired me to put it in and watch it again!

this movie is just awful, one of the worst adaptations of this story, if you want to watch a better, if not THE best, try watching the 1995 BBC miniseries.
