Thank you so much!!! I love being able to talk about books and thanks for your engagement in the comments. I can’t believe that people spend their time watching me talk about books but I appreciate it so much! ☺️
I've read this book and didn't enjoy it as much as you did but I agree with your review. I found Anisa very unlikeable...even a little sociopathic. I felt the same way about the reveal but couldn't put into words why it was not satisfyingly but you did, beautifully. Thanks for the post!
Great review!. I really also appreciated the exploration of language & the greater social value of some languages over others (German over Urdu in this book for example). As someone with a languages (Spanish) degree, the concept was like catnip & I was glad that it didn’t disappoint. I fully agree with you point about the characters though📚👏
Thanks, Tabitha! With your background I am sure this book was a very interesting read for you. And great point about the social commentary around the hierarchy of languages!!!
Thank you for the review. I have ordered this book partly because I loved the cover. I love stories that promote uneasy, they keep me trying to pinpoint what is wrong and why.
I will begin by saying that I have never seen your channel before but I love the punny name, also fair warning of vague spoilers in my comment. I definitely think that Anisa was unlikable on purpose and we never saw Adam's point of view because the book was meant to be all about hypocrisy and and the way that the upper classes use the lower classes to achieve their goals. Adam was one of the people who earned his way in to the elite and Anisa was already the elite and yet was unable to see her own privileges because she leaned heavily on the lack of privileges she had in some situations while wholy ignoring the rest. I thought it was a fantastic book for that reason. I also clocked the twist pretty early on when she got to the center the first time and from that moment onward there was an extra layer of meaning spread all through the word choices throughout the book that had me laughing. As for the reveal it was matter of fact but to me that played into the meaning of the book, might is right and so way should there be a dun dun dun moment at all. It did fizzle out at the very end but other than that I was really impressed by the author. I have read Conrad's Heart of Darkness and I definitely see what you mean in the comparison!
7:37 me paso exactamente lo mismo con la revelación, y a la protagonista yo la odie hace mucho no me pasaba que detestara TANTO leer a alguien 😭 igualmente me gusto que tuviera tantos grises en su persona dentro de todo fue una buena lectura
Totally agree with your review, I'd lean towards a 3/5 myself. The focus of the story felt all over the place, and Anisa was so unlikable and self-righteous but somehow painted as the hero IMO.
hi Gretchen, your reviews are wonderful. You give just enough without getting into spoiler territory, in my opinion. thanks so much. 😊

Oooo! I’m excited to read this one!
If you do end up reading it, let me know what you thought.
@@madeubook I will!

Such a stunning cover! I hope you enjoy it, too!
I agree with your review. The first half was so strong and it just fizzled out...
Thanks! I’m glad I’m not alone.
Hi Gretchen. This review was so interesting. All that buildup with an ending that isn’t as impactful. Will put this on the library list. 🌸
Sometimes I am my own worst enemy with my expectations. I have heard that some people loved the reveal so it may have just been me 🤷🏻♀️

Thanks for taking the time to comment and you bring up a lot of great points. I’m curious to see what this author does in the future.
you know, I haven’t read Joseph Conrad yet, it I do want to. This video has reminded me about this book…
Heart of Darkness is definitely worth a read. It’s very unsettling and disturbing to think about what some people are capable of.
I'd love to read a book about Joseph Conrad and Ottessa Moshfegh writing a book together. It's such an odd couple.
Me too!!!! Hmmmm…now you have me thinking about other classic authors I would love to see collaborate with contemporary authors. 🤣😂🤣
That does sound tempting, but I don't think I'll rush to read it just yet. Good review though. 👍
There are just too many books to read! 😂🤣😂

I agree that it was hard to like Anisa. She was so spoiled and expected everyone to bow down to her
