- Minky backings are sooooo cuddly!
But also, scary to load at the longarm.
Minky has a LOT of stretch, and machine quilters need to be masters at controlling that.
Let me show you my best tips👍🏻

Hello Susan, hi from Linden, Tennessee
I adore quilting Minky. I’ve had minor issues with it as I’ve used it. There is nothing that shows the quilting design on the back like Minky - it shows all that quilting work beautifully. Plus the “snuggle factor” is very high! I’ve done free motion and computerized quilting with great results. So I highly recommend it! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with great details and so easy to understand.
You’re so welcome! I too love the way the quilting looks on it❤️
Thanks always helpful.
Love that you not only explain what you're doing and how, but also why! That helps me so much to take your approach into what I do, even though I do sit-down quilting on my sewing machine.
I'm so glad! That's my whole mission ❤️
Have never tried minkey.
If you put a 1” strip of Sticky Solvy along the sides with stretch, it will stabilize it and reduce/eliminate the stretch. It dissolves when you wash the quilt. Love your videos!
I’ve never heard of that product, but I’ll look for it!
I am confused by top to bottom or side to side directions. Can you clarify by which direction is selvage to selvage?
I would call that side to side, but of course I use the same words but mean different things when referring to direction of the quilt or rails. I'll do my best to clarify every time I talk about it.
Any tips on dealing with minky that has a seam in the backing?
Very gently! Press the seams open to keep them as flat as possible, and be so light with the stretch tension.
Do you use your snappers on minky?
I do...although they're a bit harder to put on!
Cotton thread is more likely to pull Minky fibers to the top.
That is what I found too. I find glide thread to work the best. But I have experimented with other threads and embroidery machine threads. Some don't pull the nap up and others do. I think the thread needs to be slick. The friction seems to be what pulls the nap.
Ah, that makes sense. I never quilt with cotton so that would explain why I've never experienced it.
These videos are always so helpful. I have actually been nervous to try a minky backing. Think I will try it on a baby quilt just to get a sense of working with it.
Thank you! Excellent timing! I'm loading my first minky backing this week.
And a very good late morning to you late morning for me and I’m coming out after you’ve been on for an hour but yes, I love Minky and I run into my own fair share problems with it so I’m willing to learn
Good morning from NC
Thank you!
