How Three Nurses Are Bringing Filipino Comfort Food to Their Community | Hungry For More
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 лис 2021
- Bilao, a restaurant that opened at the height of the pandemic in Manhattan, was started by 3 Filipino nurses who worked at a nearby hospital. After working a night shift - nurses Jude Canela, Maricris Dinopol, and Joan Calanog left the hospital craving a taste of their homeland in the Philippines. Bilao serves up the ultimate Filipino comfort food such as Tocilog - a breakfast dish made up of garlic rice, fried eggs, tomatoes, and cured pork. With no local options to feed their craving - the 3 chose to open Bilao and in the process, feed the local community of healthcare and frontline workers.

Like if you are thankful for frontline workers this holiday!
I'm thankful for all the frontline workers. 💕🇵🇭
Maybe transfering that thankfulness into a descent wage or better working conditions would be an even better option... And don't come me with "no politics"! It's disgusting how Governemnt and for profit healthcare systems worldwide are "thankful" for these people, but never ever would actually transfer that into action. I dont think "thankful" is the right feeling, anger is way more appropriate...
Love this show concept. Whats the name of the first instrumental at .54 seconds. Dope. Well all the instrumentals really lol.
What is a front-line worker? Those forgotten people that work though the pandemic, like me? No one appreciates us. We are nothing but white supremacist.
I mean you should see how they treat the indigenous Filipinos cause there black these people aren't Filipinos there Asian the original Filipinos are black
I've got a lot of respect for the Filipino nurses. I spent a lot of time in hospital here in the UK after becoming disabled and many of the nurses were Filipino. It astounded me to see how poorly many of them were treated, by patients AND other nursing staff. These people have travelled halfway around the world, to help others, and that's the thanks they get?! It's disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. To all nurses, Filipino or any others... Thank you. If it wasn't for you all, I doubt I'd be here today.
Yeah, it sucks that we have to recruit nurses from third world countries when it's them that needs the better health care.

@@ryan-tabar Yea, it happens pretty often, and it's sad that these poor counties throw out talented/useful individuals to first world countries.

Amen
Filipino nurses, opening up a Filipino restaurant, so they have somewhere to eat after work... insane... Respect...
This is probably the most wholesome thing I’ve seen in a long time!! Thank you all our healcare workers for everything you’ve endured the last 2 years. Without your sacrifice, America would be even more dysfunctional than it already is!!
Yay! I am an American who lives in the Philippines-and the truth is food is a huge part of the culture, people say “Kain Tayo!” Which means “let’s eat!” Even if they don’t have much food, because it is the culture here to share love and food is one of the most important ways to do so.
Such good people!!
Where in the Philippines are you? I live in Florida and have thought about taking a trip there for the last couple months. Any suggestions? How do you get along with the language?
@@tempest3376 You really don't need to learn the language to get around in the Philippines. Most of the people usually (depending on the location) already know basic English to communicate, especially on tourist locations. But hey, more brownie points for trying to understand the language... the people will love it!
@@asanezz1111 I figured that’d be the case with the tourist areas. But I’d prefer a more “local” scene so I can really see how people there live, behave, eat, etc. Personally I’m just fascinated with other parts of the world and how they function, especially smaller countries. Thanks for the input!
The original Filipinos are black not Asian these people aren't Filipino
As an American married to a Filipina and living in the Philippines, I am convinced that Filipinos uphold the world. Thank you Filipinos!
These people arent Filipinos the original Filipinos are black these people are asian your married to a Asian lady
Being friends with a lot of Filipinos, I can definitely concur that they are some of the most giving and welcoming people I have ever met. They’re invited to the carne asada, and I’m invited for some lumpia! 😂👌🏽
it may take a lot for one man to conquer the whole Philippines.. I, however, concur that Filipinos are pretty neat..
concur?
@@cpcpcp yes the OP said conquer (to take by military force) but clearly meant concur (to agree). two completely different words with different meanings and similar spellings.
Bro Lumpia....my mouth is watering I miss that stuff soooooo much.

Kuya is a nurse, in school, and serves food. Guy gives 250% on everything apparently 💪🏾
My wife is a retired RN after 35 years working in hospitals. Sometimes she got so caught up in the day to day that she forgot she was an angel to her patients. These nurses deserve all the praise and good fortune they receive.
Every Filipino has a nurse, a caregiver, or a medical professional among their family, relatives, or close friends. This tribute means a lot. Thank you! And mabuhay to the owners of Bilao! 👏
I Agree:)

This is possibly one of the best shows First We Feast has created. I need to visit NYC and try all of this season’s guests asap!
I got really emotional watching this video. Not because I’m Filipino but just so thankful for what they do.
So inspirational. Filipino people are hard working and cooks their hearts out.
#1 mistake foreigners make when eating Filipino food: they don't pair it with rice.
Hence why they think it's too salty, because it lacks the balance of how you SHOULD eat it. Virtually every single Filipino dish MUST be eaten with rice. Only dishes that are eaten with rice are considered "meals", everything else are "snacks". The only exceptions are noodles and soups, and even that is not set in stone.
No the orignal Filipinos are black and there food is Hella different you Cleary don't know anything about the Philippines or Filipinos
@@Shel230 I am Filipino. lol
@@AngryKittens nah if your not related to the indigenous people from there then you can't really call your self filipino
@@Shel230 LOL
1. Just because Negritos, Papuans, Indigenous Australians, etc. are dark-skinned doesn't make them "black." Here's a fun fact for you: Negritos, like other Australo-Melanesians are the human group genetically furthest away from Africans.
2. Almost all Filipinos have Negrito ancestry, in addition to the more dominant Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) ancestry. Didn't you notice that we're brown?
3. Sige nga. Magtagalog ka nga. Pwede pud magbisaya ta, kung gusto nimo. Haha. Intawon ning mga way hibal-an lagi uy, na mag-arong ingnon dayon.

There’s a very small Filipino restaurant in my town and it’s a nice taste of Filipino food! Wish there were more places available around me but I’d love to travel to bigger cities to try them!

You guys rock.
Filipino Food is first and foremost, decadent Comfort Food.
It's main purpose is to make people feel good.
It's all sugar, salt, fat, acid, carbs and protein.
It's a needy people pleaser.
It should, for all intents and purposes, be one of the world's favorite types of food.
Sarap nman ohhhhh

My favorite type of food. Filipino food I always embrace my Filipino side my mom is half Filipino. Alot of Filipinos in our community and also the bay area which is 1-2 hour drive from where I'm from.
