Cycling Ontario, Part 1: The North | Cycling Across Canada, Ep.23

  • In this episode, I cross into the province of Ontario. I start meeting lots of cyclists - those riding across Canada and others bikepacking in the area.
    July 11, 2022
I ride into Kenora, where I meet a cyclist with whom I share a camp spot - the reason? He has a tarp and my tent is still leaking.
July 12, 2022 Kenora to Vermillion Bay
Showers and thunderstorms, pretty much the entire day. It's warm so I decide against wearing my raingear as I don't want to sweat. I arrive in Vermillion Bay and stay at the Evangelical Church. The locals there help me open it, I meet interesting people who come in for an AA meeting and also discover that one of my Arkel Dolphin 48L panniers is leaking.
July 13, 2022 Vermillion Bay to Wabigoon
I am treated to a lovely breakfast at the Happy Go Lucky Seniors Club in Vermillion Bay by a couple who organized my access to the Church the previous night. I then continue to Ignace where I attempt to wild camp. Doesn't work out and I leave the spot and find a campground.
July 14, 2022 Wabigoon to Ignace
I'm getting tired and the miles are adding up. It's still quite hot in Northern Ontario. I arrive tired in Ignace and decide to stay at a motel - the most charming spot!
July 15, 2022 Ignace to Upsala
I want to leave early, but end up leaving at 10AM. I then stop at a Service Ontario location to renew my driver's license and my health card, which were both due to expire. This section of Hwy 17 has multiple rest stops and I stop at ALL of them. I meet people who give me water and food and have a great time riding this stretch of highway. I arrive in Upsala and find a campground. I stay there for an extra day to rest.
July 17, 2022 Upsala to Kakabeka Falls
I received many recommendations to stay at Kakabeka Falls and now that I've been there, I would also recommend it as a great location. I stay at the Provincial Park and tour the area in the morning.
July 18, 2022 Kakabeka Falls to Thunder Bay
I leave the Falls and head for Thunder Bay - only a 30 KM distance. But I don't have accommodation for the night and storms are coming. I also don't like not knowing where I'm staying in a big city, so I ride by a few churches that are closed and then I decide to call a Polish Catholic Church. Father Piotr invites me to stay in the basement overnight.
    July 19, 2022 Thunder Bay
Coincidences are not just that - they are meant to be. While in Thunder Bay, the priest hosts a family from Mississauga. And it turns out that it's a long lost friend from highschool, her mom and her brother. We have a great time together in Thunder Bay and I will meet them again along my journey.
July 20, 2022 Thunder Bay to Amethyst Harbour
A short ride to Amethyst Harbour. On the way I visit the Terry Fox Memorial, which was somewhat difficult to get to. I arrive with the Warmshowers Host family and stay at a small cabin. I take another rest day and enjoy a day full of kayaking, relaxing, hiking and a sauna.
July 22, 2022 Amethyst Harbour to Nipigon
A special day as I'm meeting up with my parents who drive up from Southern Ontario to see me. On this stretch of highway 17 the shoulders start disappearing and although most of the drivers are respectful and give me space, some drive-bys are scary. I arrive in Nipigon and spend time with my parents, hiking the suspension bridges in the area and enjoying our time together.

I recognized nearly all of those places, including that layered rock cut. Looking forward to the next video. If you stayed on 17, you’ll probably have some scenic shots of Superior in your video. Those hills though….
I was just out there by Wawa this week for work. Stopped at the lake and overlooks for pics. I never get tired of the views.

Yes! I met A LOT of cyclists in Northern Ontario, that's because there are very few roads to ride while there, so all of us ended up in the same place.

So far, so good! Love the footage of NW ON. Kakabeka Falls is much more peaceful and serene than Niagara Falls. And yes, Lake Superior is extremely cold 🥶! Looking forward to the next part!

Glad you enjoyed the video. I ended up kayaking on Lake Superior while staying with the Warmshowers host family. Luckily it was hot, so the cold water wasn't too jarring. But I wouldn't swim in it.

Another awesome video Agnieszka! Thanks so much for this stellar content in your videos! Your cinematography skills are exploding! Great edits! This video is bringing back all sorts of childhood memories from the early 1960's for me when for 2 summers we lived in Brandon and came back to Southern Ontario while my dad tried to get work back in Ontario. We car camped all along the northern shore of Lake Superior. I can guarantee that lake is soo deep, it NEVER gets warm! Although I would go in ANY water as a 5 year old, try as I could, I could only get my feet in in AUGUST! And even then, I only lasted 5 minutes until my feet turned blue! Such great fall shots, such great happenstance meeting the long lost friend and fellow travelers and such kindnesses! Couldn't agree more about shoulders! They should be the default necessary for ALL roads! Eagerly awaiting the next installment!

Thanks for watching! To answer your question, this was the only church I actually called, and that's because it was on the other side of town and I didn't know if it'd be open. Typically, I'd just show up. There were many instances of a church building being closed, so I'd go to a neighbour's home and ask if they had a contact for someone who could open the church for me. I did this on multiple occasions and was never turned away. It's a church after all.
