Yet being homeless twice and being abandoned by his wife early on didn't shake his drive to make it in this word, and he's managed to turn an admittedly difficult hand into a royal flush. These days he's a billionaire several times over with a successful Paul Mitchell haircare line and even a founding stake in Patron tequila brand. So how did he maintain motivation? He remembered giving a dime to the Salvation Army as a boy, and how his mother told him that those dimes add up and can really help people. This lesson directly helped him overcome a period early in his career where he was collecting bottle caps to get money to eat.GOOD FORTUNE, a documentary based on John Paul's life, is available on all digital platforms on August 1st.

John Paul DeJoria is the co-founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems, today the largest privately held salon hair care line, and Patron Spirits Company, along with a number of other business ventures. He is a first- generation American turned entrepreneur, philanthropist, and pillar of the business community. Once homeless, he has struggled against the odds to achieve success, launching multiple global enterprises, while always supporting his motto, “Success Unshared is Failure.”
In 2011, he signed Bill Gates and Warren Buffet’s “The Giving Pledge” as a formal promise to continue giving back. He dedicates a significant portion of his wealth to a variety of environmentalist and humanitarian causes.
John Paul has been profiled for his corporate and philanthropic initiatives across a multitude of media outlets including 20/20, CNN, Forbes, Fortune, Inc., and Fox, Fox Business News, Bloomberg, CNBC and NBC, and recently appeared as a mentor for budding entrepreneurs via a guest shark appearance on Shark Tank.

John Paul Dejoria: A lot of people ask how I got into donating to various causes, and how I got involved in even homelessness along the way, and popped out of it-well it's a very interesting story. My mom has a lot to do with it.
At six years old we didn't have any money; there was my mother, my brother and I. We had a deadbeat dad; left us before we were two, but she took us at Christmas-time to downtown Los Angeles. We had little cars going around in circles, it was pretty cool, and decorations in the window.
She gave my brother and I a dime and told us, "Boys whole half of it each, give it to the man ringing the bell in the bucket." We put it in this bucket, we said, "Mom, why did we give that man a dime? That's like two soda pops." This is 1951, two soda pops, three candy bars.
And mom said, "Boys, that's the Salvation Army. They take care of people that have no place to live and no food. And we don't have a lot of money, but we can afford a dime this year. Boys, always remember in life: give a little something to those in need, they'll always be somebody that's not as well-off as you are. No matter where you are or how far down you are, try and help someone along the way." It stuck with me.
The first time I was homeless I was 22-and-a-half years older and I had a two-and-a-half year old son. I was working as the Master of Ceremonies at the Second Annual Sports Vacation Recreational Vehicle Show and I had a check coming in at the end of the week.
Well, I came home and I drove our one car up to where we lived and as I was getting out of the car and going up towards our apartment door my wife-we were very young, we got married at 20 and 19 years old-my wife was coming down the stairs and she said, "I'm going to storage," and she took the keys. By the time I got through the door I saw my little boy, two and a half years old, kind of just sitting there on top of a pile of clothes with a note that basically said, “I can't handle being a mom anymore. He'll be much better off with you. Good luck.”
Now, what I didn't know also was that she had planned this for a few months. She had not paid the rent for a few months and kept the money and I didn't know that. She wiped out what little we had in the savings account in the bank and took the only car we had. So unbeknownst to me, two days later I was evicted-completely evicted, power shut off, the landlord-she just really timed this one. And I had this little kid with me, two-and-a-half years old, and now I had to be mom and dad and tha...

I went to the courthouse a few weeks ago and I had a tie wire belt to hold up my pants. A cop took me to the side and offered me his belt, took it off and handed it to me. One of the nicest things someone has ever done for me. That's one of those little things that makes the world a better place.

I was homeless last year as a single father for 5months with a son as i am a single father. I started a company here in colorado called gaia painting. 1st contract was with the state parks and wildlife. im a subcontractor as well doing surface repair.
It starts with service to others and thinking diffrent.. if you do this your life will change.

I meet him in person. He really is humble in real life.
I've been homeless before, my dad lost his job and had to take care of my sister and I. We slept in a hospital waiting room, an abandoned RV, a junker van, friends floors, etc. We didn't know where our next meal was going to come from sometimes but at that age I was able to convince myself it was a big adventure. The point some of you may have missed is sometimes you're down but you're not out. I'm glad he was able to eventually find a job and we haven't really been wealthy or even middle class but things have begun to turn around and I will do whatever I have to in order to stay off the street. Luck does play a factor but having a good attitude can only help.
I hope things worked out for you and your family,I'm a single Father with 3 girls and missing meals or sleeping anywhere I can hurts but if I had to have my girls go thru that my Heart would be Broken forever...I'm Not Religious but if there's a God I Pray he Blesses you and your family...

You can become a surgeon, specialize, work hard and get promoted. Boom, six figures. This has nothing to do with luck. You won't be a billionaire but you'll earn more than 99,5% of the earth. And I think that's still pretty good.

If he had given up, he will never be able to make that connection and even if he have it if he had succumbed to depression he won't have the right mindset to make use of it.
It's a story about the utility of being strong and charitable, not the moral value behind it, fact of the matter is, no one wants to help people who just whine and complain because they see it as waste of energy that could have been put to greater effect to problem solving... People that can take care of themselves can always see if you can but refuse to do the same, and if you can't take care of yourself they know they can't help you, so they will always choose to help someone who actually NEEDS it, Because if you don't contribute to society than it owes you nothing which is exactly what you will get. Nothing in this world is owed to you other than what you create for yourself... So no, it's not about who you know, it's about what you know, which is sadly something many people refuse to learn, because it's easier to place blame elsewhere...

Yep, happened to me the first time I was homeless.
Here, in America,
there is a lot of stigma and hate towards homeless people;
especially coming from the politicians.
Some of our cities install spikes in the ground where homeless people are known to sleep, so that they can't,
some pass laws against feeding homeless people in direct person-to-person ways,
some pass laws against them having their own shopping carts,
some have police out looking for homeless people, to harass them, even when there is nowhere for them to go.
Many of our shelters are really bad places; so bad that some people would rather live in cardboard boxes in back alleys.
And many of our homeless are disabled vets, who risked their lives
for this country.
It's really not that hard of a problem to fix;
but most of the people whose job it is to pretend-to-care
need acting lessons.

Harry I live my life by MLK's motto "It's always the right time to do the right thing", BUT, it's people like you why my family sold all our rentals.Renters do NOT take care of anything and especially nowadays, renters think it's the landlord's responsibility to pay and take care of EVERYTHING. We've been out of the rental game for nearly 50 years and things have gotten so much worse since then.So-called "emergencies" are 1 thing, but, if you believe the bullshit comment I've replied to, you deserve to be homeless.

I must disagree with this. Someone very close to me was a landlord of a small apartment building, working very hard at a full time job at the same time. 1 month a tenant couldn't make the payment. "Please make it up next month" (this is a business). Next month unfortunate events happened. Okay, dealt with it by a kind heart. By 8 months (3 years after rents had gone up significantly in the area) (Los Angeles btw) no income, no importance to the issue was given. Ultimately a regular woman with 2 kids and no drug addiction or sketchy past failed to make rent didn't seem to know what it's like to be homeless had to be evicted. What I learned from this is people will prevail while others will feel sorry for themselves.
Other day I was standing next to a taco truck and a homeless man was looking at me starry eyed while I was ordering. Someone had bought him a taco. While I got my food and was about to take a bite he asks "excuse me, sir. Can you buy me something to drink?" I give him a dollar. Fucker walked off with the dollar and did who knows what with it instead of doing what he asked me he was going to do with it.
In other words: be part of a solution towards someone who's struggling and has potential. The rest well if you can't see it then you're feeding the problem.
Loved this. Saw him on Shark Tank where right away he bought the farmer's invention of a Tree Tent. I love farmers, I love saving water, I love saving the farmer's money, and I loved how charitable he was. Since then I've been a big fan.
Feed the babies who don't have enough to eat,

I have really changed my life around the last ten years ...got back on My feet and my next major plan is to keep saving my money and buy some land outside of L.A. county ... I'm going to build a big man shed ... On it I'm going to start a u-haul lot ... Truck storage and equipment only ... Build hot rods and grow weed and be happy ... You and your daughter Alexis are some of my biggest inspiration ... I'm also a huge fan of hers ... I'm also a big drag racing fan ... I've worked for a few F/C teams and a few alterds and cackle cars ... When I met you guys I was blown away by you guy's ... Believe it or not I'm from L.A. and moved from the streets in the northeast area out of L.A. and I was homeless I moved to Malibu got up everyday and would go to the Santa Monica pier collect cans and bottles for five years straight ... Saved my money got off the street ... I'm disabled from a bad motorcycle wreck but I didn't let it stop me ... I remember a story when they were starting out Paul Mitchell. If they went to NYC to pitch their products to a board, they would fly on the red eye from L.A. because they had no money for a hotel room in NYC, so the plane was their bed to sleep that night. Very inspirational man.

I agree with JP. I'm homeless and give to other homeless people worse off than me. It's amazing the effect the gift of giving can have for both sides. It's not all roses and unicorns, but if you can show one person humanity is as beautiful as we think it might be then giving and accepting help is truly powerful life changing stuff. a society in which so many people live all their life one paycheck from homelessness is insane. like if I don't get paid this month or something goes wrong, I'm screwed.... that is a life no sane person would live. ever. it's no wonder most homeless people are without a family backing them up.
People need to be more frugal and minimalistic, its amazing how much money you can save up once you stop buying shit you dont need. We need to end this debt culture in america, everyone taking out loans, credit cards, ect. A great econimist once said the only investment with 0 risk is paying off your debts, or better yet not having any.
Chum I partly agree, but the fault is 50-50 between people and society. often without the support of the family and a well paid job, it's hard to keep up even with the basic expanses like rent, bills, car, clothes, medications and decent food. so as soon as one loses the job, ends up on the street.
Well, that's life. We in America have it better that many other countries, especially the poor who have privileges (yes, privileges) like welfare, social security, section 8 housing, and charity programs. They're lucky to be alive at all. The only reason out population is so high is that these poor people even can survive.
I don't really understand how people get into situation like that (apart from described in the video). Like, do you have no savings and no shit that you could sell quickly? Literally two months ago I was in the situation when I was screwed over and didn't have enough money to pay my rent, just sold my guitar with an amp and it was fine. If tomorrow my legs would fall off for no reason and I couldn't go to work I could live like half a year just selling shit. It's not like I can carry it on my back if I'd be homeless.
Does your government not pay you each month if you lost your job? Here in the Netherlands they do. You have to proof to them that you're trying your hardest to find another job. And the government also searches for a job for you, and when they find a job you have to take it or they cut the monthly pay off.

Homeless twice without a job both times. It was friends that helped me get going again. Family did nothing.
I'm always saying, "be a little nicer, a little kinder than you have to be. It might make someone's day, it might not. But you know you've done something good. And maybe, just maybe, it will inspire them to do something good too, and the whole world is a nicer place."

That is awesome! I never knew that about JPM, and can't help to admire him that much more. I can so relate. Wasn't quite homeless, but I gotta say, I was a paycheck away from it a couple times, and had to get food from food bank several times. I mean I was completely broke. With the last scraps of money I had, I started making wooden trinkets hoping to sell them for food money with home made finishes I learned from my grandfather and fine tuned. Turned out the people started wanting the wood stains I made instead of my trinkets 🤷♂️ Now I sell my finishes, and well, definitely not JPM successful, but I can at least get a power tool or two at the end of the year and maybe put a couple bucks away for rainy day. It is something I sincerely adore doing, so it worked out so much better than I could have hoped for 😀 JPM has such an awesome story...thank you so much for sharing that inspiration JP 👍

My biggest problem is I have no dream. No idea. No drive or passion. I don't want to be anything. I barely even want to be alive. Success means absolutely nothing to me. There is no place in the world for someone like me.

Every time i hit a low i seek videos like this one where successfull people speak how they hit even lower than me and got out of it. It gives you confidence and energy to not stop and go through it.

I’m blown away. I’ve always used his products. I never knew how amazing of a person he is. I’m so inspired
His products are very good but nothing compared to what he is as a MAN.
My grandmother used to do the same thing with me and my brother whenever we would go "downtown", except it was blind and crippled beggars on the street corners. And although I never became rich, I do give back by supporting several young Romanian orphans, Haitian children, Holocaust survivors, children's hospitals and Israeli orphans. It all brings me great joy.
What struck me is his mindset. When he said he needed money so where do you go to get money I thought he was going to beg at a traffic light with his child as is common here in South Africa. But he went and collected bottles and sold it which is harder work but prouder than begging for money. It is always interesting for me to see beggars at a traffic light and next to him is someone selling phone chargers or sodas or even floor mats (in South Africa they sell all kinds of stuff at traffic lights in some spots)
Like this as inspiration. As a teacher and human being have been giving back heaps so far to others but little has been forthcoming to me in return and I live a life of shortage and need in the country where I reside. What should one make of this?
Giving is/has its own reward. Give more and follow Jesus... It is written.

So many of the comments are guided by false dichotomies and acceptance of principles based on either small samples or blind faith. Luck has a lot to do with success, something that's not likely to be acknowledged by someone born into every privilege. Getting a helping hand, whether from friends, family, the community, or the government, may well allow someone to get back on their feet. Of course there will always be people who, when offered a hand, try to pull the other person down. But there are many stories in the world and we should be able to celebrates ones like these. Most of us will never be billionaires, we can still recognise success in more humble places. And it probably pays not to look down your nose too much at other people, who knows what their story might be or where they might end up.
Like how we clearly realized that there were good ppl in his life on the way, and encourages charity bc even if it's a greedy reason, it's true that every success helps make a future customer and there can never be enough of those!peace

Nobody ever gave me a vehicle when I was homeless with my daughter. It's a lot harder when all your family is gone and don't know anyone. Instead of teaching me about thinks like credit and financial security, my parents taught me to use drugs. You are an exception. I'm happy for you but most us begin life at disadvantage. I didn't have a chance. Today my life is good. I don't have much money and bad credit. But I have a good job and I'm grateful for everything I have.

I saw a documentary about homelessness some years ago, and everyone had smartphones. It was an additional way for them to stay in touch with their network. You can get pretty cheap phones and plans. I admit the documentary wasn't from the US.
Homeless people love to hang out in libraries where it's air conditioned year round and have free magazines, books, and free internet. A lot of them also have government supplied cell phones. The world is a changing.

I had a homeless guy approach me and ask me for money, I responded "why don't you get a job?" He said "because I hurt my back I can't get a job", to which I told him " iv been shot before, and If I can come back from that you can come back from a sore back". He said nothing..
i am by no means doing well for myself but I have a roof over my head and food in the fridge and I work hard. You always have a choice.
I feel much better after hearing this talk, there can be a bright side to hard times.
He wasn't truly homeless living on the streets. He was working, got help and was always doing something and never gave up. He had ideas, backers and was being productive. Title should be on the brink of homelessness. He had pride. Most homeless have no pride and have mental illnesses

I grew up dirt poor and always hungry. To tell you the Truth it toughened me up. Now middle class and comfortable and bored.nothing to fight for. So I help people in my old hood.
You can go from no money to billionaire in only 2 ways:
1) print your own money and hope the government doesn't mind
2) OTHERS HAVE TO GIVE YOU THAT MONEY
In a HYPOTHETICAL world, one can OWN - say - by inheritance - a LOT of land, a home, advanced technology, yet NOT be left with ANY money. Usually that does not happen, but it can.
So, by definition - one IS RICH with NO MONEY.
As long as one has been left with the PHYSICAL THINGS as well as SKILLS, training to continue physically surviving on one's own, growing one's own food, repairing one's own clothes, one COULD hypothetically REMAIN RICH - i.e. have all the things one needs or wants.
Some self-sustainers in rural areas DO do that.
But, MONEY is a thing that makes sense ONLY RELATIVE TO ANOTHER PERSON.
SOMEBODY ELSE HAS TO GIVE YOU THAT MONEY. So, unless THEY pass along MORE MONEY to YOU than YOU pass along to THEM, then you CANNOT go from poor to rich.
THE POINT: NO HUMAN BEING HAS ANY CONTROL OVER BEING ABLE TO GAIN MONEY.

Not mentally Ill as most define the term, but I, at 20 years old, after a severe Nervous condition, something "POPPED" in my left brain hemisphere as I was walking home from a factory job I took after High School! I don't know why, but Parents didn't take me to a hospital within either of my early Brain conditions, and for many years, (Over 15 for sure,) I lived with tortuous pain! I couldn't think at all, as all I could do was (Hold on very tightly,) and withstand the consummate pain!
Goals, never could get into them, Schooling almost impossible, yet I tried, but failed! Finally, I was able to talk without the jibberishness and loss of Intelligent abilities that beset me for so long, but no life at all. No social Life, no education, Nothing but pain! I just went through school taking tests primarily, as I COULD NOT concentrate or provide energy on anything, so I went through about 3 semesters sitting in Class like a LUMP of inactive protoplasm. It was just unbearable and made me feel even worse, with every experience I went through, that were thought to be normal, but just made the pain worse! ! No money and am hoping that my Sub-Penny Stocks will come through and allow me to buy that Van I so sorely need at this stage in Life?
Yes, homeless too, and starting at the age of just about 60 Y/O, and lasted aver 7 years! Yes, all of us went through severe episodes in life, but teaches us that the mind can only take so much before it collapses! So good luck to all who can't get much done in life because they entered the social world without preparation, and couldn't take it in the end! Many problems in this world that values the "SOCIAL" life, rather than the singular working life, which is the Savior here on Earth, yet they still don't know it, despite all the pain they are enduring?

I too was also homeless for 9 years due to a severe work related back injury, after five years I was able to get the surgery I needed, after successfully recovering I borrowed some money from my brother and sold my car that I live out of, went to trucking school to get my CDL. I'm still living out of my truck and I've managed to save almost $200K so far, I'm about to buy my first brand new truck this year, and to continue saving for another and another truck until I have enough to have people work for me. I have helped out so many people, and in return they were able to help others as well. It takes sacrifices to achieve goals in life, I relentlessly prayed everyday 5,6,7 times a day every single day, god truly blessed me with great doctors and a loving brother and my dad, who with little they had, was enough to get me on my feet. I refrained from begging on the street, as I have been ask if I did when I tell people my story, no way, I sought public assistance instead which I considered a handout and not a hand up. So when you see a homeless person you don't know how they got to be in that situation, the situation may have driven them to drugs and alcohol, for which I stayed away from while I was in my situation, I could have easily turn to those things, but god kept me away from that.

He learned how the monetary system works and used it to his advantage to start businesses and to serve other's. So again you seem mad at him for figuring out how to use the system to grow the economy, provide job's for people, perhaps like you, and to be successful and wealthy!?
