    So helpful. I’m the kind of nerd who wants to understand the “why” behind everything before I can really internalize it. Knowing the history and evolution of the design is usually the best way to do that. So I really appreciate this video!

    Thank you very much for your thorough explanation of various receivers, protocols, and most importantly, suggesting to check with the manual when all else fails! I have spent many hours attempting to get Betaflight to talk to my receiver properly. After combing through the manufactures info, sure enough, they show the proper setup using pictures. I have the Mateksys F722 and a Flysky-fs-i6X transmitter with iA6B receiver. I had to solder g 4v5 and ppm all in a row and turn off serial communication. I know this may seem obvious to the veterans, however, this FC is picky on where you take power and ground from for it to detect what you are trying to do! Lol Now to actually test everything else! Thanks again!

    Thank you so much Joshua for your (as easy to understand as possible) explanation of wiring FC, PDB, ESC, etc. I hope it also applies to planes (except with only 1 motor and so 1 ESC). I now feel more comfortable about installing a FC in a future plane. Now I have to think about where to attach sensors and finally to understand and master the PC software used to 'flash' the FC's firmware.

    Appreciate your explanation of PINs mapping to UARTs on/around 17:05 of this video. Been trying to figure out which UART to assign in Betaflight for XM RX going on Fury F4M FC. FC doesn't appear to have a manual and being new to this stuff, wasn't sure how to figure it out. Your explanation hlped out a lot. Thanks again! UART 1 by the way.

      Just be careful about how much current you pull. The GPIO pins are usually not rated for very much. Agh! In fact, it looks like this document says the absolute maximum rating is only 25 mA for the F3 chip! I believe that a spek sat should come in under this, but it would be worth checking or you would burn out the pin.

    Joshua; Have you done any work with the Pixhawk Flight Controller...? I have built a S500mm X Frame Quad-copter/Multi-rotor 4 Motors. Pixhawk FC, Flysky FS-i6X transmitter with the Flysky FS-IA6B Receiver. The IA6B Receiver says it's output Channel 1 is PPM, Pixhawk accepts PPM on the RC In pins. The Flysky FS-I6X transmitter in RX menu, scroll down to Output. It has for options: PWM and PPM on the left. On the right, there's I-Bus and below it is S-Bus. I've heard that Mission Planner is not compatible with Pixhawk although ton's of people use MP. Pixhawk recommends QGroundControl. All the Manuals are not real clear about connections/options. I'd like to use PPM protocol Receiver to Pixhawk but should I use the I-Bus or the S-Bus...? On the Flysky IA6B Receiver (you showed one on this video) there's 7 rows of vertical Pins: Channel 1-6 plus B(bind)/Vcc, then there's two rows of 3-Horizontal Pins: (Headers)..? "I-BUS" /Sens/Servo... I want to use the best configuration as possible, can you help me understand the difference...? Thanks in Advance, James...

    Thanks for the videos. This one may solve a lot of issues I've had lately trying to use serial on FlySky. I've been configuring using S-bus instead of I-bus. Ended up going back to PPM. Working on a new one,will see if I-bus setting will work. Another thing that stumped me for along time was figuring which Tx's work with which Rx's (AFHDS vs AFHDS 2A). It would be nice for noobs (me) to have a list of compatible devices.

    I've watched, I'm sure by now, all of your videos at least in this series several times over. And don't get me wrong, you do an excellent job at explaining everything, because when I started watching your videos, I KNEW NOTHING about soldering and drones. Had a background in computers though, so I figured this can't be too hard, right?
    3 receivers, 1 4in1 ESC, 4 individual esc's, 1 PDB, and 2 Flight controllers later, and I think I've almost got it. I'm just stuck on what you would direct me to this video for: connecting my receiver. I have a Holybro Kakute F7 mini v3, FS-ia6b receiver and FS-i6 transmitter. I am trying to hook it up via ibus and I'm lost.

    I know this is an older video but I'm looking for a new Tx and therefore am trying to learn about the new systems.
    Please correct me if I'm wrong but am I correct in assuming the whole S-bus thing is irrelevant if one only flies fixed-wing planes (like me)? I now have transmitters with - indeed - 8 seperate channels. With S-bus I would need a seperate flight controller to split those 8 channels out of the S-bus into seperate channels again to connect my servos, therefore ending up with more hardware than I do now?

    • @dingalarm
      @dingalarm 3 роки тому

      If you have a receiver that only has an s-bus output, then you need an "s-bus to pwm converter" (~$10) that can provide 8 PWM (servo) outputs. A flight controller could also be used, but it is more complex to set-up (computer required), more expensive, and it may not have 8 servo outputs. For regular, "old-school" line-of-sight plane flights, just use a PWM receiver.

    So for the serial micro rx, if it's srxl (serial) does that mean it produces sbus out? Or is sbus a specific type of serial protocol, and srxl is a different type of serial protocol? The Spektrum RX you mention should be DSM2/X which uses SRXL, which is serial, but it sounds like that's different from SBUS?

    Hey Joshua. I could really use your help. I'm trying to find out how to wire the x-rsx reciever to my hglrc Airbus f4 FC. There is an rssi and an sbus pad. Do I solder smart port to the rssi pad, a tx pad or an rx pad?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  5 років тому +1

      The RSSI pad is for analog RSSI output from the receiver. There is an analog RSSI pad on the under-side of the RXSR. That is what would connect to the RSSI pad. Then you would enable the RSSI_ADC option in the Configuration tab.

    • @pegisis02

      So where would I put the s.port? Sbus out would go to sbus on the FC. 5v and ground to 5v and ground.
      Would I need the separate rssi if I use the smart port?

I want to run ibus as well, seems all the info on the inter webs says ibus is great but there’s so many variables that flying with other drones or tx’s and rx’s around that maybe a diff one would be better.

    Yeah? I purchased a Qx7 after many yrs of spectrum, most receivers that are serial have three wires pow, gnd, signal. The frsky receivers i purchased the fine R-XSR has five wires which one is the signal?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 років тому

      You're probably using the RXSR. The wires are power, ground, Smartport telemetry, sbus out, and SBUS in.
      SBUS out is the typical signal wire you're used to. SBUS in is used for redundant receivers where if the redundant one failed the main one would take over.

    R9 slim+ OTA, sBuss out is the signal wire. Signal wire is what the Kopilot lite call it. Then 5v hot and a ground on the black connector. This essentially the same as a servo connector sbuss out = signal wire on the no OSD flight controller. R9 slim+ OTA, HAS AN SBUSS IN. Do I ignore the sbuss in on the receiver?

    Joshua - I read through the googles section of the Ultimate guide -- Aomway Commander deserve a slot on the list. Stu (UAVFutures) recommends them (check out his review) and seems to use these as his go-to goggles. They are on par with top of line Fat Shark, a little lighter.
    Otherwise - many thanks for the list, great info, very helpful.

    Hello,Thanks indeed 1st of all bcoz I got benefited wth ths comprehensive video. For future remembering, could u pls explain why for Ibus we hv to select I/O 2 or whtever port? Why not I/O 1 ? Talking abt SP F3 board , if u knw. Shall I jst remember wthout understanding? Why in "ports" menu, I hv to select UART3 as well? I did successfully configured ibus in CleanFlight , bt if I knw th reasons , it wld stay in my brain forever. Thanks again. :-)

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 років тому

      Because on the SPRacing F3, UART1 is shared with USB. So basically you can never use UART1 for anything or it will conflict with USB.
      I don't know why you had to select UART3.

      Josh,
      I am a brand new in this drone's cable wiring, flight controller,configurator softwares & all this PPM, Sbus etc etc, bt jst have basic RC electronic knowledge.
      I jst hv seen that UART1 must be on in CleanFlight or it by default or by itself stay as on. I set up iBus in SP F3 board using IO 2 port.
      My mistake sorry, I did not hv to select UART3, jst did" serial RX" in the Port menu of the CleanFLight.
      But for learning, why I can not turn on UART3 or 2 if u kindly explain why? Thanks.

    Hello Joshua, I was wondering of you have an idea if a Cleanflight NAZE32 is compatible with JR DMSS and if not what controller would be? Thank you

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 років тому

      +AZ_PIT_VIPER I think that dmss is the air protocol. The FC doesn't care about that. You need a receiver that outputs PPM or serial protocol. But honestly Naze is an F1 board and I would not recommend installing it in a quad if you intend to run Betaflight or Cleanflight. They barely run on F1 and they won't support F1 at all in three months.

    Hey josh thank you for the help yesterday... have you ever heard of an aux switch acting funny meaning working some times some times not( flysky i6) because I found out that was my quads arming problem. Agian thanks I used modes tab to figure it out ... ps the ad for 3d pen was cool

    • @JoshuaBardwell

      Check in the Receiver tab first to be sure the Aux channel is moving correctly. If you see the Aux channel moving when the switch is not moving, the switch may be damaged.

    Mr. Bardwell I wonder if we could ever have technology similar to "Bluetooth" for receivers, flight controllers, and ESC and have everything talk to each other? Your thoughts ?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 років тому

      What a waste--to have a wireless radio on every single device. And have to pair everything and etc. Wires are a great solution for what we are doing.

      +Ruben Flores anything you can do wireless you can do cheaper, faster, and simpler with wires. Except go through walls or over long distances. Wires are a great solution to the problems we solve when we hook up a quad.

    • @JoshuaBardwell

      That appears to be a parallel PWM output receiver. Those aren't supported hardly at all any more with mini quad flight controllers. You want a receiver that outputs a serial protocol like SBUS, iBus, or Spektrum Satellite (DSM).

    Nice :) What could you give as a general tip to improve wind handling for a kinda old SN16A (BlHeli) and Naze 32 setup (running BF 3.1@1.6k/1.6k) ? I got some wobbles, do I need to add P or D ? (Motors are cool)

    • @SpikeJonesTheCr0oked
      @SpikeJonesTheCr0oked 7 років тому

      Odus Thesar FPV Neither... I believe it is the I term that will help you with wind...if in fact that is what is causing the wobbles. Soft mount your FC for starters esp. if you are using a naze rev 6. I'm going to assume that you know what prop wash oscillations are and that those aren't the kind of wobbles you speak of btw.

    • @CubAndMine
      @CubAndMine 7 років тому

      SpikeJonesTheCr0oked Vibrations I'm speaking about are only wind related, and prowash is somehow not that bad handled. My setup is old so it's impossible to have the best results out there but I just wanted to know where to tweak my pids 😉 thanks a lot

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 років тому

      You cannot move MSP off of UART1 on that board. It is hard-coded to the USB port. If you take MSP off of UART1, you won't be able to connect to the board at all.
      Isn't there a UART3 on top of the board?

      +clarence soh teak ang yes because F3 has configurable inversion on all UARTs. So iBus (not inverted) and SBUS (inverted) can work in the same UART.
