Can you make a video explaining the type of Wi-Fi system you should be using because my wifi system has reached the max number of devices and I don’t know what to do
One "dumb" automation I did 20 years ago was buying one of those timers you put to your wall-socket and I put it to my coffee-machine. Since then I have woken up to fresh-coffee smell every morning.
I love the Paul Hibbert outro. Also, about Homebridge and HomeKit, don't underestimate that power couple! That thing runs our entire smart home as far as automations go.
For anyone wanting the tornado alarm or any severe weather alert there is a hacs integration that uses the NWS api and works well. Plus it gives you a ton of useful sensors and easy to setup and customize.
@@SmartHomeSolver Sounds good to me! 3D printer has to be one of the best purchases I've ever made, as it's super cool to be able to manufacture things that can't even be bought from anywhere at home and so easily.
I'm also using the National Weather Service integration in my Home Assistant to change the lights in the house based on if it's a tornado warning, severe thunderstorm warning, or flash flood warning. But I haven't setup my Alexa devices to announce the weather warnings or playing the EAS sound yet. That will be a great addition to my home automation thanks for the ideas!
The sliding door for a dog is a great idea for our balcony! Balcony is secure on a high floor and our dog loves to spent time there looking from above, or just taking naps in the Sun.
I have similar routines (to the “Goodby one) set up when I leave using geo-fencing. It’s set to run whenever the house is empty. My Roomba starts cleaning and everything turns off. I love it. I also love that the light in the entry way turns on whenever anyone comes home.
The first time I see a NFC tag really cool and useful. I must admit that I never thought that a NFC tag could have a real use in real life. Just loved it.
Here's one more for ya: if you have twin curtains on one window don't get two curtain bots, just get one, and tie a string to each side to attach on the other side, with each going around a nail at the end of the curtain track on each side, respectively. Both ends must then be tied to where you would've put the second bot so that the strings from the first bot pull on the second curtain when the first one moves.
@@BrandonLe621 you don't, the bot does. But if it's a Switchbot, it's got a feature whereby if you yank it just a bit, it will open the curtain by itself. You probably mean how you open the second side of the curtain? The string does it, cos it's tied to the bot then goes around the nail and connects to the first chainring from the second side of the curtain. '=====** =======' the apostrophes are the nails at the end of the track, the = are the curtains and the * are the prongs of the bot. when one side pushes, the other goes around the nail to the other side and pulls - and vice-versa. protip: fishing wire works best
I once bought NFC stickers in bulk with the hope that I would have an automated life filled with fun. I only integrated one… since I’m a vinyl nut and have vintage stereos I really like the cassette idea. Might do that :)
The octoprint integration to Home Assistant is insanely useful, I use it (along with some plugins on Octoprint side) to notify as well as shut down my printer when the print is done.
Octoprint makes that automation pretty easy. Excellent software! I don't think I've ever used my 3D printers physical controls for anything but tramming, power, and filament changes.
I use my humidity sensor to detect if someone is taking a shower. Then the header put the bathroom heater to 24º in 5 minutes timers as long as the humidity still over 75-80%. Once the humidity goes down the header stops asking for heat. Setting the desired temp make it perfectly useful for summer and winter as the bathroom is only heated if needed.
@@thorleifjacobsen Still, it is definitely a security risk. Someone could easily activate it while you're home. Even more likely though is a wild animal accidentally triggering it and then coming inside.
Driving a convertible really makes me appreciate having the garage door already open by way of geo fence routines on those days when you are trying to beat the rain home. Nothing worse than before with rain coming down and trying to will the garage door remote control to somehow work from a further distance than it ever had before.
You can turn just about any garage door opener into a smart opener by adding a $30 controller. Installs in minutes with just a couple of wires. And even better than geofencing because also voice activated. Highly recommended - even if you don’t drive a convertible!
Smart plugs are also great for 3d printers. Some printers have big fans that run constantly even if the printer isn't working, so using octo print, you can set a timer through home assistant to take the estimated print time, add 30 minutes (for estimation error + cooldown) and set the plug to turn off at that time. It's great.
Wouldn't it be easier to let octoprint trigger a script after the print has actually finished resulting in the plug to switch off? There are plugins for that.
I got interested in home automation after seeing a video of a disabled girl using an eye gaze communucation device to talk to alexa and control lights, fans, etc. My daughter is quadriplegic and non verbal so of course I wanted to give her some control over her environment. I started putting smart plugs on everything, an echo in every room, etc. Last year she got her communication device and she still needs lots of practice, but she's learning to use it for alexa. Aside from that, I use the sound detection routine to trigger an alert to my phone if anything in her room beeps. I can hear some of her machines throughout the house, but not all, and then of course if I step outside for any reason, I can know exactly what's going on inside. This is also helpful if I have to leave her at home with someone else. I can of course watch her cameras, but it's good to know when her machines alarm so I can call and assist if they need help. Basically my whole house is set up to make caring for her easier.
I have my google set up for goodbye routine. Turns off all lights, turns off all smart plugs, turns off tvs, changes thermostat to away mode, opens garage door, turns all air purifiers on high, starts dishwasher if the door is latched, makes sure oven is off, and then says local traffic information and sets phones to do not disturb for driving mode. Then when we’re on the way home it’s set for “we’re coming home” so it sets the thermostat to home mode to start cooling/heating the house so it’s comfortable when we get home, asks for oven preheat temperature, preheats oven if necessary, and broadcasts message for the kitties saying we’re coming home. When we get home the lights automatically come on and the air purifiers go back to auto sense mode. Bedtime sets lights throughout the house to change to different colors/brightness, turns off tvs, turns off smart plugs, sets air purifiers to night mode (high with screens shut off), reminder if any laundry is still in either washer or dryer, says next days weather, asks for morning alarm time, changes thermostat to whatever we desire, then all the lights shut off after 20 minutes. We also have lots of other automations that do different things depending on certain conditions. Have several nfc tags placed on side table by the couch to automate lights, surround sound, and fans. The tags are for different scenes like movie time, game time, cleaning house, bedtime, and nap time for my son. We haven’t gotten our security cameras or video doorbell set up fully. They claimed to work with google assistant but not sure how. Everything is set up properly but we don’t get notifications or anything. Might be because we don’t have a display for them to project to yet.
For octoprint, I've also made sure that the robo vacuum cannot start if a 3d printing job is running, so that it won't bump into the table the printer is at. Home assistant will also shutdown the power to the printer 30min after the print if there was no further activity.
i have an automation similar to the cassette one. with mine i have vinyls on my walls and when you tap part of it; it plays the album and changes the lights to match the cover
Greetings to all, I have an automation I created. From New York City where I live, I start my boat in Florida regularly off my cellphone to keep everything charged up and running. I can see the motor running, and it has voice status output, besides complete cellphone controls. Even a year later, the boat is ready to go out for a good time.

The amount of cloud dependent automations is simply stunning. Why would anyone rely on so much internet bound stuff. I know internet malfunctions are rare, but they do happen once of twice a year for most people with standard non-business internet connections. My ISP has the bad habit of updating the firmware multiple times per year and they do fail sometimes requiring a router reboot. @@thorleifjacobsen Still, it is definitely a security risk. Someone could easily activate it while you're home. Even more likely though is a wild animal accidentally triggering it and then coming inside.
