For those of you who don't know, this tune is also used at the climax of the famous 1812 overture, interspliced with cannons! if that doesn't make this anthem awesome, I honestly don't know what will!
Moreover, in Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture, the first 5 cannons fire is to depict the French invasion of Russia as a small part of La Marseillaise can be heard, this 5 cannons fire to depict battle of Borodino respectfully. Then followed by Church bells and Russian Empire anthem : God Save The Tsar, this is to depict the overturn of French invasion. Furthermore, followed by 11 or 12 cannons fire to depict the russian counterattack and French massive retreat during winter campaign. 1812 overture is indeed a picture of French invasion of Russia.

I think it's the Anglican Church. BTW: George V., Defender of Faith for the Anglican Church and Nicolas II., the Protector of the Orthodox Church, were closely related. Like Kaiser Wilhelm II., Emperor of Germany, they were grandsons of Queen Victoria.

Well the whole point of the overture is commemoration of Russia's victory over Napoleon. So if you listen carefully you hear first the theme of the French anthem, i.e. when they seem to be winning, but then among all the clamor of war suddenly the Russian anthem comes in and essentially overtakes everything and that is the beginning of the grand culmination and ending of the piece.
Still the most beautiful majestic epic rendition of this song. I wish I know who made this rendition. Rest in Peace Tsar Nicholas II and the imperial family.
I went for high school at the Pierce College in Athens Greece , and l am surprised how Americans had this music exactly the same for the Hymn of the College ! It was great but surprised how they chose the Russian tune for American hymn ! We were lucky l loved it

In my Anglican youth I remember that we sang a hymn to this tune - it had a rather dramatic old testament flavour to it -God the All-terrible! King, Who ordainest / Great winds Thy clarions , the lightening Thy sword etc. According to to hymns Ancient and Modern it was designed to be used in times of trouble.

At the finale of the Slavonic March as well, Tchaikovsky was really big on this song
Thanks for the information. I knew that I had heard that melody before, but I just couldn't place it and it was driving me crazy.
Moreover, in Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture, the first 5 cannons fire is to depict the French invasion of Russia as a small part of La Marseillaise can be heard, this 5 cannons fire to depict battle of Borodino respectfully.
Then followed by Church bells and Russian Empire anthem : God Save The Tsar, this is to depict the overturn of French invasion.
Furthermore, followed by 11 or 12 cannons fire to depict the russian counterattack and French massive retreat during winter campaign. 1812 overture is indeed a picture of French invasion of Russia.

Well the whole point of the overture is commemoration of Russia's victory over Napoleon. So if you listen carefully you hear first the theme of the French anthem, i.e. when they seem to be winning, but then among all the clamor of war suddenly the Russian anthem comes in and essentially overtakes everything and that is the beginning of the grand culmination and ending of the piece.

In my Anglican youth I remember that we sang a hymn to this tune - it had a rather dramatic old testament flavour to it -God the All-terrible! King, Who ordainest / Great winds Thy clarions , the lightening Thy sword etc. According to to hymns Ancient and Modern it was designed to be used in times of trouble.
