Man, this episode always hits me right in the feels.
Having Lost my own Father, there's this deep connection with Jack's story. I know i'm not alone. That being said, there are so many wonderfully fleshed-out characters on this [important] show, that it's truly hard to pick a singular favourite.
I watched the show as it aired, and I did my second rewatch with my Mother after my Father passed on 7 years ago - I honestly believe this show played a small part in her grieving process and accepting what had happened. For that, i'm truly forever grateful to it.
Enjoy the journey Jimmy, this is a pretty damn special show in so many ways.
I never stopped feeling that way about Kate. Well...Island Kate. flashback kate is pretty good, but Island kate made me count the seconds until she was gone.
I loved Sayid too! Honestly, I loved everyone, it's kinda hard to just single characters out because they're all so unique. There's another character who I loved but I don't wanna spoil. I'm pretty sure most of you know who I'm referring to lol.
Sawyer is my favourite character in this show hes so awesome later on :D
He's cool, but his vocabulary schtick gets pretty old after a while. That's the only thing that always bothered me about him.
Yeah at the beginning but he develops into such an amazing character at the later seasons, plus I kinda like his humor ;)

John Locke was my favourite character back when I started watching this show in 2004 (somewhere around eps 4 or 5, just like you).
12,5 years have passed and I never doubted him as my favourite ever since.
Jimmy, I want to thank you for doing this. Ever since Lost ended in 2010 I have been planning to sit down and re-watch the whole thing from the beginning. You doing these reactions have inspired me to finally do it. I am a few episodes ahead of you right now and I am really enjoying it. I think (I hope!) you're going to love the rest of the series!
And I love Locke, too! Man, there's so much good stuff coming - I can't wait!
Kate's my favorite. Her story with Jack is a little forced at the beginning for sure. I read somewhere that originally Jack was supposed to die at the end of the first episode, leaving the gang without an obvious leader. My theory is that the forced insta-connection dynamic was a way to create more loss. They decided to scrap that narrative because they really liked Matthew Fox but maybe the rapid bonding was a remnant from that.
Locke definitely buys into the island. Lol

Season one is really about setting the stage for what is to come. The writers were still sort of figuring things out as they went and didn’t really have a solid plan until *after* season one had aired and they had to come up with what came next. That was when they sat down and really thought out a series plan and began to fill in all the pieces bit by bit. This is quite unlike Game of Thrones, where the entire story had been mapped out in George R.R. Martin’s head before he even began writing the first book.

Yeah, Kate is pretty annoying. I never liked her to be honest. She always felt like an obstruction to me for some reason.

Well, seasons 4-6 have 14-18 eps. But, I definitely agree.

It only "sucked" because no one wanted it to end... but everything makes sense in the end. If you don't get too LOST along the way.
Wix Jhil I'm rewatching these and in the first two minutes of the episode, Charlie says to Jack "I can't Swim" If you've watched the series you'll know, that's quite a continuity error.

Kate is unique in the fact that she is likable and annoying at the same time, but she does get better.
I feel the same way about Kate. And, Locke is the shit. He's definitely my favorite character.

It isn't just you. Something about Kate is just meh to me. I just never get around to liking her or hating her. Locke, on the other hand, is the reason I stuck with the show until I could get into some other characters.

It sure took me longer to realize Kate didn't provide much. Once we find out what she did, all interest in her pretty much vanishes.

Right now, season one, the writers purposely made the episodes so that the audience could do nothing except create snap judgments about people.

I liked Kate. Everyone on the internet seemed to think she was an amazing character or something. I never liked her as much as everyone else seemed to.
I go back and forth with Kate, she is a good person but I never felt that connected to her compared to the others. Locke's story is what hooked me. I watched 18 episodes in one day. I was sick with the flu the day after Christmas and my sister got the S1 DVD for Christmas that year. I am so happy that you are reacting to your first view of LOST. I just watched your TWD reactions and I have always wanted to see someone's reactions to one of my all time favorite TV shows. I REALLY hope you stick with the show till season 2 and beyond. The show brings up so many questions and theories, sometimes it drives you mad, but it will always keep you engaged. Do you have a theory about "the monster" yet?
Finally, someone feel about Kate the same way I do. Everyone loves her and I just don't. She is very nosy, everything has to be about her and she has to be involved in everything. So annoying, just go away.

There should be some kind of a bet...whether JMac...you! will grow to love Kate, the character, the woman or if she will be insufferable. Maybe each season you watch? Do a character check in at the end of each season? Top 3 characters....make it more interesting. Knowing you, JMac, we wouldn't have to wait until the season finale's to know how you feel about these characters, lol!!!

YES! I love Lost but Kate is so fricking annoying. All she does is stand around waiting for Jack. They only met like a week ago.

I must be one of the few who hated Sawyer...really really hated him, maybe it's the actor I can't stand I don't know? Locke was goals though.

Kate's drawn to Jack so strongly because he makes her feel safe in an insane situation. Of course there's physical attraction but it's not a Love At First Sight™ typical TV thing, though connections do grow deeper quicker than usual on the island given the circumstances (a Big Brother type situation I guess) but it's rarely ever contrived (til season 3 but I won't say any more). Kate definitely has flaws like the rest of them and is flakey to a degree but her heart's always in the right place and she ends up running to help people more than she runs away which is her natural instinct. Maybe I'm biased because I love the character (and actress) but I cared about her too much from the first time we met her to ever write her off. She's also a hero.
Locke was hands down my favorite character. Shannon was the character I hated immediately.

Kate is a very meh character. At this point in the show she feels very unimportant and slightly irritating.

It's not just you when it comes to Kate - but that's one of the unique aspects of the show. Each character is has a story. They're not from the same seed, obviously, and they don't all mix well. But they're stuck together and have to survive together. Kate is annoying as hell sometimes but it's clear she was written that way. I feel you'll understand that more as the show develops.

Jack is the best
This whole show is like this huge, crazy, insane puzzle. And eventually, it all falls into place when people watch the entire thing. When you finish the puzzle that is literally this show, I just can't wait for that reaction and that "Oh....OHHHHHHHHHH" reaction that people get.
It's funny that you already dislike Kate when you've yet to get to the episodes where she gets REALLY annoying. That best way I an describe it is that she's just there to cause needless drama that could have easily been resolved. And yeah, her and Jack have zero chemistry. Honestly, I really don't like Jack either.
I never liked Kate either. She's all over the place. The other characters are just more interesting. Kate helps things move along. She has some great scenes but i doubt she'll become one of your favourites. You should keep an open mind nontheless. Not just for Kate but for everyone.
I was neither here nor there on Kate for a while...undecided...until episode 12 "Whatever the Case May Be". Then I hated her and never regained any respect for her.
