I picked up this 2008 Impreza for parts but I couldn't verify if the engine was good because all the keys are missing. If the engine is bad I will likely lose on the deal, if the engine is good then I got a decent deal.
Let's use a Lishi (DAT17) to pick the lock on the drivers door and decode the wafers so we can make a key.
After cutting the key we ran into some issues with Subaru Select Monitor 3 failing to program the key but we resolved it by programming with the Autel KM100.
I own thousands of dollars worth of key programmers but I use the KM100 for 90% of the vehicles I make keys for. Thanks for another great video!

Seems like you can never have enough tooling. One tool can do 90% but then each tool after that covers only 1% of what you are missing.

I used to think that immobilizers would reduce car theft, but what's happened is organized crime have upped their game to keep up with the arms race of technology. You worry less about the corner criminal and more about the gangs. Unfortunately the innocent bystanders are those who try to service legitimate customers.
Your correct. Autel and a few other scantool company’s have decided to make a change in the near future. They are now going to require a locksmith ID in order for immobilizer programming features to work.
This means the diy guy will have difficulty obtaining a tool for immobilizer but perhaps fewer car thefts will occur.
We don’t know what exact functions will require an LSID but it will likely be PIN code functions and All Keys Lost functions since those are the typical functions required in auto theft.
Nothing will stop all the theft but perhaps they can make it more difficult.
I have an Australian G3 Impreza, was cleaning the key, pulled it apart and have lost the transponder chip. Car won't start and its the only key I have. The Australian keys are right angle triangles and the internet is telling me they have a 4D62/ID62 transponder. If I buy a 4D62/ID62 transponder chip, not a super chip, am I seeing from your video (30:25) that the KM100 immobilizer function - remote Control learning will program the chip? I'm thinking about buying a KM100 but want to know that it will solve my problem! :)
If you have the correct chip the autel should be able to add it to the vehicle. No guarantee since every vehicle is different and sometimes a tool just won’t work. This is the reason I have a large variety of scan tools and key programmer. The autel is very capable and most likely to succeed.
@@ThePracticalMechanic KM100 does not work with Australian 2011 Impreza G3 hatch. Car uses TIRIS DST 4D system. Most Subarus use a ID62 transponder but they don't work. I also bought XT27A and also MQB48 super chips, then realised Autel won't work with them, only the XHorse gear does. So I bought more transponders, ID82 which are also Subaru. This latter seems to almost work, when doing "all keys lost" the KM100 displays a message "Learning failed! Use of unregistered key", whereas with the ID 62 it just says "Learning failed". If I try IMMO status scan and "read PIN", it fails with "Access to ECU denied - test conditions incorrect". Stuck again

Using a Panasonic lumix with a zoom lens. The camera is about 10-12’ away from the door lock. I was going to use my suction cup mount but couldn’t find it.

Maybe a dumb question, but do you know how to start to become a locksmith?
All this automotive locksmith stuff overall seems very fun and not too hard on the body type of job/short career.
I started doing locksmithing out of necessity. My local locksmiths would take days to show up when I needed a key or lock cylinder worked on. With many vehicles you need 2+ keys if you replace the PCM so I decided the get the equipment to do it myself. It has grown into owning about 20 lishi’s, several programmers, vehicle security credentials, insurance and about 5k in key inventory. There are still lots of keys I don’t have in stock because there are just too many part numbers.
I can’t tell you how many times this has happened to me. I’m a big believer in Subaru SSM, but a lot of SSM 3 cars will have this no comm error even WITH a DST-i. But autel will do it no problem. I rely on my 508 more for these older cars
At least I am not the only one that has run into this issue. I am going to run some additional tests in the future and if I come up with a reason why it failed I will post about it.
Hi, I am facing a major issue with my 2008 Impreza regarding the immobilizer system. The car is not able to recognize the key after I removed the battery cables and put them back on. I'd highly appreciate it if you could help me out on this.

I feel like you wasted your time with that "FACTORY" tool. Lol
@@russellwhite1372 sometimes it feels that way with many of the tools we own. There is no one tool that has all the capabilities we need. 2020 and newer Subarus require the factory tool to perform functions that no other tool can yet do. The older stuff has been reversed engineered to bypass some of the processes and I think that’s why the aftermarket tool was successful here.
I need to revisit this vehicle with a different transponder to see if the factory tool just didn’t like the key.
