- Jordan Rudess, keyboardist for Dream Theater, gave us a tour of "Studio A", one of his two home studios. Rudess' wide array of analog and digital keyboards and synths, including his flagship Korg Kronos 88.
Keep up with Jordan Rudess at www.jordanrudes... and www.dreamtheate...
Disclaimer: 'Buying all those instruments and equipments does not make you as good as Jordan Rudess.'
Thats why i bought the Korg M50 10yrs ago and still have it :-D
Nico Bokardo lol me too with juno d
Well, a great keyboardist made amazing sounds for 5 years using just a Farfisa with a Binson Echorec, plus a Hammond Organ
Confirmed. I have "the workhorse", and I can tell you I will never play it live. :D
lol
Interviewer: what synthesizers do you have?
JR: *Yes*
HAHAAHHAHAHA
It's 3am and I'm a drummer. Wtf am I doing here?
You should replace a Tom with a samplepad. Then you can do cool sample stuff.
Lost, I’m bass player, and II check synth bass, and it s 5 and I also thought wtf, I m doing here. :-) go to sleep
ah...wtf am I doing here? is for an answer we seek. And then and thereby to then glean something of that which is unseen--and then, and thereby to go forth again. And in the fervor and froth, stir and kiln and forge again that which is reality.
we work better at night
Saxophone player here, its 2:10am... I feel you.
"I come from a knob and slider kind of background" I think i have found my new favourite quote.
The question is 'once you enter that studio, would you ever leave? or would you just be stuck there for eternity in keyboard heaven?' Amazing place.
I would
I would leave because there is no Yamaha in his studio.
Years ago, when I worked at Kurzweil Music Systems in Lakewood,WA, I repaired Mr. Rudess's K2600. The power supply fried in it. I'll admit, I got a bit nosy and checked out his samples and patches. Gotta test it thoroughly, right? Very cool stuff and Mr. Rudess seemed like good people.
Quipstiley me too! 😃 What’s up Tonester!
got any old t-shirts from kurzweil?
Woah, WA? Cool, my state. Olycore lol
So much talent. Still, keyboards are underappreciated just like bass guitars.
I play both😊
....And then geddy lee came out hahaha
i think he’s appreciated 😬
@@stuforty2 Not him specifically like in general dude
kung puk my man
My dad played the keys. One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't start sooner, otherwise he could have taught me. He is on his way out right now. I'm pretty sure he was a fan of Dream Theater. He played in Aurora (cover band), Mr. Clean & the Clean Machines and a couple others in Seattle.
I'm feeling pretty sentimental rn, clearly. He apparently owned a DX7 so I guess that means I will be doing some hardcore FM. I gotta do it like he did and play jazz like my grandparents. The music will not die with him.
Basically, he owns every significant keyboard that exist.
Negative, I didn't see a single Yamaha there.
he said significant
-Fluxayy- Wooow you just went there😂😂😂 but even if you did leave Yamaha out of it *cough DX cough* you're still missing the early Korg and Roland keyboards like the triton fantom series'.
hehe dw bro it was a meme ;)
-Fluxayy- Lol ik but I'm a nerd
At 3:50 did anyone else think of On the Run by Pink Floyd?
Yup
read my mind
yeah
me too
metalmusician6798 Yes hahaha
85 dislikes ?? WTF is there to dislike ?? The paint on the walls maybe ??
Nice to see a great musician working in a shed like the rest of us :)
+Paul Bateman hahaha I thought the same, maybe they're jealous
+Paul Bateman He seems to be unable to play slow.
I have listened to the majority of his work and he can play slow absolutely fine. I think he is just noodling in this video to show the sounds he gigs with. I don't think he is trying to make an impression on us all musically
+Paul Bateman The window on the left is too small. And there is a scratch on the mini moog if you look closely.
+Simon Bissonnette
What? A scratch on the mini moog? Definitely a reason for a thumb down!!!
Rudess is such a badass. One of the few huge musicians I wouldn't mind grabbing a beer and talking shop with.
12ealDeal Huge?
Jordan is truly amazing and deserves being voted top global keyboardist on numerous lists, his technique and composition skills are stellar and he believes in giving back to other keyboardists, we should all aspire to be as proficient as he is
Thank for the tour of your studio, and yes my Kronos is the heart of my studio as well.
I love this band so much. Every member is such a nice and knowledgable guy.
I love how Jordan loves his music and showing his machines that he plays on. He is one of the few guys that makes this really exciting and fun everytime.
Imagine having the luxury of that audio engineer in the background to be able to say "oh that's Jordan, there he goes again with his keyboards".
I have watched this video 3 years back, and I didn't knew much about synthesizers and stuff. now watching this again after getting a fair share of knowledge on the instruments, its history, and even owning an analog synth, its really enjoyable watching it again.
I'm not even a keyboardist,I'm a drummer. But for some reason unknown,I enjoy watching keyboard vids. Not as much as drum vids but I still enjoy them. And JR is a legend.
One thing I know,if there were no drums in this world,I'd be a keyboardist.
Met Jordan about 7 years ago. He is so un rock starish but a very creative mind.
this guys so cool and organized
Hahahaha!!! I like how he literally touches the mini moog and it sounds exactly like "On the Run"
@lifeanddecay. This man is great. By the way, "On the run" was played and recorded using an EMS synthi AKS. Basically it could be played on any analog synth, but the synthi A filter is special.
All those keyboards probably cost more than the house itself.......
HughJanus like 800 -to 1600 i think
Ik one of those is 800
HughJanus lol
i saw he had a korg oasys. that went for 15grand when it came out
depends on the house's location... if he lives in bay area...nothing can beat the house price! :)
I dont need car, I need Korg Kronos.
And a great piece of kit its is I have the 88key piano weighted keys touch Kronos only thing on it that is a slight disadvantage is it is very heavy
ReasonForCrying exactly
Hi Jordan! I LOVED the Tour. I'm an old school drummer from the late 60's out of the SF Bay Area. John Bowen was my bass player. He has his own Synth Design Line. I remember
him bringing the MinMoog to rehearsal even BEFORE IT CAME OUT (in ancient times). I believe he worked with Dave Smith, and at Korg also. The Prophet 5, Sequential Circuits has Bowen's
fingerprints all over it. John is a good Buddy of mine and we are still gigging, but in different states. Keep INSPIRING US!!
i'm more of an analog guy but Jordan really has a nice collection of analog and digital synths for a very wide spectrum of various sounds, great studio and choice of gear.
I could listen to this Sir the whole day!
I know it's stupid, but I cracked up at 3:23!
"The Melotron had great sounds..."
"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!"
What I gathered the most from this video is: Play as well as you possibly can, then learn all there is to know about using every piece of gear you have, so that when the time comes you can play practically anything you can imagine.
Space music? Is that like silence?
Listen to Neptune Towers.
like new age, but focused on analog synth usually. tons of reverb.
this is awesome Jordan.......
Could this be the most capable musician of our era? Amazing.
Wowsers! Musical possibilities are endness in your place
Glad you're a fan of the Radias - very under-rated.
The incredible Studiologic sounds 🏆
Jordan gives some mad props to the “very striking” Studiologic Sledge 2.0 at 05:40 and really plays the hell out of it, but he never mentions what it actually IS!! It’s the only instrument he demos here where he fails to mention the brand or model of the instrument itself.
It’s almost as if someone (MF?) slipped it in there just before the video shoot without him seeing and he just rolled with it playing it for the first time not even knowing what it was.
“It’s got big knobs” and “fun wheels”. LOL
That looks like so much fun
i miss that k2600. whenever i see one, i think of jordan :)
Love your collection. Being a musical instrument builder and collector I appreciate this stuff. I too have sold things I regret like my Melotron (1973) and mini Moog (1974) but still have my Phophet 10 (1984) which is still in mint condition which I will NEVER sell (unless the price is right!).
awesome how Korg has told him to totally ignore the OASYS so the customers think KRONOS is totally a new product haha.
Sounds real good. . . . don't stop . .
Jupiter 80's so powerful!
For the same reason this Jazz Fusion drummer is listening and learning from this once in a lifetime genius on keyboards!!
got some great skills
I love that little tune he plays at 4:50. Very nice.
Really enjoyed this video and I'm not a keys player.
Its not about your instrumnets, its about your knowledge and talent you!
8:37 NEEDS to be in a song.
yeah, no doubt :D
***** Or Ilumination Theory I think
Thank you, for the tour!
Crazy talented dude
Lot of synth players seem annoyed or tired when showcasing their gear. Dude seems surprisingly friendly. lol.
Im also a drummer its almost 1am same thing ,got to love Jordan Rudess ! I swear chick Corea had a baby boy 50 years ago his name was Jordan!
FusionHowie also a drummer here at 12:30am. Weird
He could just shred on a potato.
Gitana Maldita he’s Jordan Rudess. He can do anything.
Wouldn't that require a mandoline?
A potato with an LFO.
That would make some nice shredded potatoes! Or some french fires!
@@demosongsheetmusic aahhh the marvels of the prog cuisine, yummy!
a lifetimes work of experience in a room 😃
Thank you. I am just learning . Years ago I heard the music of Tangerine Dream. I love this band. ( Old Berlin School) . In my site I tried to put visual and videos together. Now, I need to learn how to do it myself. My own compositions. Yes, my friends from school call me, the " Star Trek" girl.
Im here because i brought a piano for my daughter.
buy mini moog for her
Get her a good teacher that can teach her how to change her TEMPO . You don't have to play everything a hundred miles an hour
He likes to collect
"Ahead of their time" synths...
Although I dont play the piano, I'm fascinated by synthesizers...
I dont know what it is, but just love them...Maybe it's all those knobs and pretty lights flashing on and off like a spaceship ready to blast off...
I really enjoyed Jordan's candidness and open honesty...
Very nice man...
This guy never wastes time to advertise a new record he put out.
crasy stuff!!
really special keyboards!!
"You have the Continuum Transfunctioner!?"
Lovely!
1:28...just wow
Indeed
Jordan You are Awesome and an Awesome Keyboardist...You are so intellectual and Sane. Thanks for inspiring me....gonna look you up...
Ahhh the Dream Theater and Justin Brown connection, hmmm so much time passing.. Interesting realities at work, as usual!
I call this, ‘Guitar Center’.
Holy God, is that a Mellotron the AC is dripping on?
Awesome and amazing
Kratos has a studio
Funny you should mention, as Dream Theater wrote a song for God of War 3. Check out Raw Dog.
I'm proud of you guys. There is absolutely no one talking about his beard.
that is a musician.
thank you !
Go to 8:39 to have your mind blown.
what song is it tho?
Skylord Gaming
+metalmusician6798 - Hell yeah. How awesome and dramatic is that sound? Love it.
What song it is?
Yo man wassong???///?//??
Thanks so much for sharing your passion for synths !
3:51 seems to be like Welcome To The Machine - Pink Floyd.. lol
Talent of one person in a hundred years
who is that dude in the background
No idea but he definitely didn't care about being distracting and annoying so I assume it was his son.
SRNF Lol. wkwkwkwkw Yeah, I totally agree with that.. he must be his son.
Drake
Woah what he played at the end was so EPIC :)
I've never seen anyone with so many keyboards in one room. Amazing.
I think his assistants main task is to shave him occasionally when he goes of on one for days...
Such nice keys. So many modern classics. VSynth, Radias, etc.
Geez I wonder if this guy uses any keyboards for making music.
????
of course not. he uses tribal drums
+Jefferson Sales HA, just gets them for free if he says he plays them.
I like that studiologic orange!
that is a nice shiny yellow synthesizer, but WHAT THE HELL IS IT? YOU SAID NOTHING ABOUT THE MAKE OF IT, I don't have a FIFTY INCH SCREEN, to read the tiny little name stamped on the bright yellow banana machine, how about a UPDATE
It is the Studiologic Sledge syntesizer, nice stuff :)
pinguino002 oh,thanks, studiologic huh? I bet they have the money since every company uses their keyboards
If anyone else is wondering, the *yellow one* is a *Studio Logic Sledge* He never actually said its name in the video but you can see the print. (There you go Piano Shack Woody, that's why they print the name!)
your's today for only 4 grand!!
His lame ass patches sound so amazing when he plays them.
+Thingsandstuff haha right? this dude shreds on the wackest sounds
BigFatCock lame??
some rando ?????
James Reeno he’s saying that they sound weird or they sound generally not interesting. But when Jordan plays them they sound incredible.
In a way they are retro and sometimes cheesy sounding but it works super well for the style he plays.
I want to meet this man, and see all of these GLORIOUS synths.
Correct me if I am wrong, but the keyboard he has in front of his computer, is that the same keyboard he used on the Metropolis: Live Scenes from New York dvd?
+Jared Klock The purple Kurzweil K2600 is difficult to miss.
Buying my kronos, the best decision I made. Thanks Jordan!
this guy has so much talent
What is the guy in the background doing? Is he seriously mixing and eq'ing the few sounds he is playing? I feel so bad for Jordan, he can't even play at his HOME studio when the guy isn't there!!
Timecop1983 he's doing live mixing
He's in facebook
Wut
Timecop1983 ooooooooooo
You feel bad for Jordan? What's wrong with having a guy mix your synths while you do a professionally shot interview? Would you not rather have a guy help you out with such stuff?
Oh wait, you aren't yet as famous as he is so you probably can't afford one. No offense, your album was very nice, I'm a dreamwave fan. :) But still, cut him some slack, he obviously plays much better than we do with those puny Juno-106s of ours. :)
I'm a knobs and sliders kind of guy. I could listen to this stuff for hours.
i'll take the moog and the mellotron...
Well sure if you want to limit yourself sonically. For investment posts sure if pick them too. Personally I think they sound like shit
Great video!!!!!!
3:50 Wow, so "Pink Floyd'ish"...
amazing
jordan is the man, such a nice dude.
this dude play always the same thing...
Не правильно!
Fascinating
That satanist seems a fair bloke. The other heathen in the back brings up the sound since some of those toys are hissy. Oh I'm pretty sure he kills the goats for their blasphemous ceremonies. Not being wasteful sorts, he roasts the carcass for supper. All and all a great viddie. I may watch it one mo' time
What the hell?!?
(sigh) the guy with the goat beard looks like a satan worshiper. However i enjoyed the video at lot. I think ill watch it again. Clear enough? Sorry for the rambling. Adderall......
douglas williams A little far fetched, don't you think?
Lollllllll
Satan worshipper? What the hell are you on about. So everyone with goatees are satanists? If you want to satanist band, go look at something like Slayer.
"Music" isnt a strong enough word to describe the sounds I heard from this man's fingertips.
