The landing speed ("only" 20 m/s vertical shortly before crash, definitely below the part limits specified by the mod) wasn't the problem, it is just that KSP has a bug when landing on Jool (and the sun): You will fly down to -250 m and then your ship, Kerbals and everything else that in any way passes below this limit get destroyed no matter how fast you were before the disaster happened.

I don't know if you have this, but there is a Mod/are mods that Add inflatable Ballons. With such Cargo you could, perhaps, float indefinitely in the Atmosphere as a kind of Stranded "space station".
