I think this relationship wouldn't be possible without Irie's mom. If it any other Asian mom, especially with a son like Irie who's a genius and a doctor, I don't think they would like Kotoko as a daughter-in-law who's kinda dumb and clumsy, no matter how kind she is 🤷
If you watched the whole series yes Irie's mother loved her right away. However Naoki did not thought she was stupid and a waste of his time. However though, when she saved his little brother from drowning that was when he began to slowly had a change of feelings for her and began to really look at the person she was. Yes she maybe clumsy, and not a good cook but it was everything else she was that he couldn't be that made up for it. She also saved Yuki again when she was walking passed the house when she heard glass breaking when his mother left him all alone. He was too young to be home alone. She saved his kid brother twice. So it was very possible without his mother's help.
Imagine being this stressed out about being late for a date not because you think your husband will be worried about you but because you think he's left for home. Moreover, imagine having to fight so hard for a date with your HUSBAND in the first place. Defend this man all you want, but I don't wish this on anyone. The person carrying this relationship is Kotoko, but the person keeping it together is the mother in law.
Why do you say that? That is me with my husband. I have done that I rush to get ready so he won't up and leave without me if we have a date night planned out and I didn't need my mother's help we have been together since high school lol.
People defend Irie???? Damn Masochists XD. Nah Fam Irie is trashy and doesn´t deserve Kotoko, I usually only defend Kotoko, even if she is flawy too, she is such a genuinely hardworking and sweet woman and actually I´ve watched this show like 3 times only because of her. Queen deserved better but at least she is happy on her own way.
@@animfangirlkag22 Honestly I don´t know what to say, personally I think is weird that your SPOUSE would leave if you arrive late on a date that you BOTH planned.... sounds weird to me, maybe is something cultural(?
I agree with you. Even side characters are saying that Kotoko doesn't deserve Irie when it's the other way around. She's really doing her best in keeping and handling the relationship. On the other hand, Irie is smart and handsome. However, he's stoic and cold. He's a person who needs guidance at all times. He needs someone to help him manifest emotions and feelings. Hence, Kotoko is there for him--for his character development. It's kind of unfair for Kotoko though since the relationship is unbalanced at some point. The sacrifices and risks that Kotoko had done for their relationship weighs more than Irie's contribution and that's the reason why I pity her the most. Also, i think Kotoko was traumatized by the fact that Irie was so mean and rude to her in the past to the point where she got worried that Irie might have left the place. Irie had attempted to leave Kotoko behind. Instead of leaving together for school, Irie usually leaves first and Kotoko always got left behind. Overall, their relationship is unhealthy for me but I'm not in the position to dictate such relationships since everyone has their different definitions of love, sacrifice, risk, and consequence. For both of them, it might have been fair. Nevertheless, for me, it's a big no. Irie's character development is commendable but it does not change the fact that he hurt her a couple of times (namely the adjustment, mistreatment, neglect, and his coldness).
Naoki's character development improved so much by the end of the series. He went from being emotionless to understanding feelings like love, jealousy, and regret, realizing that he could have been a better husband. This transformation was largely due to Kotoko. While other girls like Matsumoto and Chris may have seemed like smart and ideal matches for Naoki, I don't think he would have changed as much without Kotoko. From ignoring her letters and exhibiting rude, cold behavior, to adoring her every time he gazed at her and admiring her whenever there was a chance, Naoki's growth is evident. He even waited for hours on her birthday, knowing how special that day was for her and understanding she would be upset if he had left. He truly improved a lot. While he rarely expresses his appreciation directly, whenever he talks about Kotoko to others, he never blames her or complains; he always speaks kindly about her. When I rewatched the series for the third time, I initially felt that Naoki was a red flag and that Kotoko deserved better. I even started to ship her with Keita and Kinnosuke because, although Naoki was shown as emotionless, he was different when he was with Matsumoto and Chris. He wasn't annoyed and spoke to them nicely. On the other hand, when he was with Kotoko, it often seemed like he wasn't happy to be with her. But after rewatching the series again and again, I realized that Naoki always sought out chances to be with her-not directly, but through subtle actions. Many things Naoki did silently went unnoticed by others, but it’s clear that he really loves her, possibly even more than Kotoko loves him. He’s just less expressive than most people, and that's okay. As an introvert myself who struggles to express feelings verbally, I can understand Naoki very well. He wasn't a red flag; he was simply flawed. Without Kotoko, he would never have noticed his flaws or tried to change. You can't find your flaws by staying with people who are just like you. Kotoko, too, is filled with flaws, but while Naoki is intelligent and good-looking, he was also cold and emotionless. Kotoko, though a bit dim and prone to daydreaming, is far more expressive with her feelings, which makes them a perfect match. Kotoko thinks she is lucky to have Naoki, but she is wrong. He is the one who is lucky to have her because, despite how he treated her before, she never lost hope and always tried her best to impress him. If there had been any other girl instead of Kotoko, Naoki would never have changed this much. Unknowingly, he had already fallen for her when they had their first kiss, when she told him she was going to move on. He just wasn't sure about his feelings at that time and didn’t know how to express his emotions. Even Naoki knew that Kotoko couldn't do 90% of what he could do, but Kotoko could do the 10% of things that Naoki couldn’t do. They complete each other.
Whatever you say about irie his the example of "she fell in love first but he fell harder" you guys should watch the taiwanese version starring ariel and Joey. You can definitely see how he loves xiangqin. I'll fight everyone who said that it's bad
I know that majority of the people here hate Irie but I can't bring myself to hate him because his actions are completely understandable. Genius people tend to lack emotions, yes they're relationship may be toxic at first but I just want to praise our Irie for changing himself. Just like from this scene, he really waited for Kotoko. And then again, i respect all their opinions whether you hate or love Irie.
No. Anyone who thinks it's ok to be like Irie is probably above average at best. I personally know plenty of scientists and researchers and I'm a lot like Irie in terms of intelligence but I have plenty of kindness. I never met a scientist who didn't wear their heart on their sleeve, who wouldn't help everyone they could, who wasn't full of love. Intelligence is never ever ever is an excuse to be an asshole. Even if others seem dumb compared to you, you can't really be an intelligent human unless you see everyone as someone to learn from.
