A few minutes on the water in our new West Greenland kayak

- A quick preview of our completely redesigned West Greenland Kayak. Based on the CMC-IV-375 Greenlandic hunting kayak stored at the Canadian Museum of History, this early 20th century West Greenland hunting kayak is surprisingly versatile. The moderate length makes it a playful, controllable kayak that is noticeably quicker than longer boats due to the reduced wetted surface. It sits low enough in the water to tackle advanced greenland rolls, but still high enough to be useful as a day-trip sea kayak. Additionally, the deeper than normal foot area combined with my own framing adjustments make this a kayak that is significantly more comfortable than the original while still remaining true to the dimensions and classic lines of the original.
This kayak was redesigned from the ground up in the fall of 2021. The new version improves comfort, stability, paddling performance, and is now available in 11 sizes to fit paddlers from child size to 220lbs!

Your “oneness” with boat and water is a joy to behold. Many thanks for the outstanding image capture.
That is some pretty flawless rolling form there, Brian! I love your confidence exhibited by the blue jeans!! 😂
Scott Lovrien
Very smooth lines. She looks like a seal gliding through the water. Nicely done.
I sure wish you would start up classes again.
That boat is gorgeous!! Those rolls 🔥
Thank you Brian!
So beautiful to see you back in shape and form after that long period of disability
You are a remarkable human being 🍻
Live long and prosper 🙏
Happy New Year
Man I really hate to be a bummer here but I’m still very much disabled. A five minute paddling session like this and I’m sick for weeks. Haven’t been able to paddle recreationally for over a decade, it sucks.
@@capefalconkayak So sorry to hear that 🥲
Your creations and innovations never cease to amaze me 👍
That looks so tranquil.
I bow to your skills!
Happy New Year,
Chris
I never knew that it was possible to roll a kayak without using the paddle to lever yourself back upright. Very cool!
…lovely.
Pretty boat and peaceful music.
Thanks
That's a beautiful boat and the video editing is superb!
Thanks for that thorough update Brian, I'm even more interested in building one in the next few years. I'm surprised you found it paddles even better into wind than kayaks like the F1, as mine is very happy going head on into a force 4 or so. This sounds really good. Outstanding work and dedication, thank you!
Wow, those are some boat handling skills you have there.
Very nice to see you running your new kayak through its paces! I sawed and planed a Greenland paddle last week as a Christmas break project with a friend. Next step is coarse sandpaper. Then I'm probably going to take the advice from one of your other videos and get a Rubio Monocoat sample to finish it. This summer I hope to be doing some of the things in this video.
Awesome!! Looks wonderful! Thanks for sharing. I’m going to take lessons starting in March and I’ve been watching lots of sea kayaking videos for inspiration. Eventually I might build my own Greenland paddle.
Always in awe to the seemingly effortless roll. Inspiring to better mine in any Kayak I paddle. The lake is open, but winter water here off Lake Ontario is to be respected. I will bide my time, spring will be here soon enough.
Nice boat! Great rolls!
Amazing paddler with amazing kayak....
Nice layback roll with forward finish! Need to practice mine. Perfect amount of freeboard for your weight and easy to see as you edge and turn.
Wow all I can say is wow and so glad I expect do a lot of paddling myself but nowhere in your league you're the best
Beautiful work and skills on the water!😊
Dude ... you make it look so easy 😂🍻
Nice roll ! inspiring Thank you .you make it look very easy .
Thank you!❤
Wow, just going rolling in your jeans. Awesome
Nothing like being on the water! Great video sharing! Watching you from The Ole church 5 Acre Homestead…yes…. We BOUGHT a CHURCH….to live in and to start a HOMESTEAD!…and we are on a BEACH!
Awesome!!! Greetings from France!
Awesome impressions and a fantastic looking boat. The hand-rolls were a bit messy though. It is so hard to keep the head low in the water when it is so damn cold.
This is fantastic... Thank You!
A quiet master. 🙏🏻😌
Beautiful boat and a real Pro
Beautiful kayak! Thanks for sharing.
Wow that was awesome
Amazing!
great video!!
Cara, fiquei encantada!🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
I have never ever seen somebody go kayaking in jeans!
This is beauty
The lines of your boat are beautiful. How long is she? 5-6 Meters? Your display of skill is hypnotic. Thank you Sir!
It depends on the size, This particular kayak is 5.1 meters, but I offer plans and 11 different sizes depending on the persons body size.
Great!
Fantástico!!!
nice skills
Full kontroll 😎
Cool
it‘a beauty
Very good🇦🇷
Hi there. Absolutely love your videos. What is the spray skirt/wetsuit top thing you are wearing called? I don't think I've ever seen something like that before!
Kayaking in jeans. Thought that was just a Jersey thing. LOL.
Nothing says pandemic like jeans and socks in a Greenlander 😂
Very nice inspiring stuff love from Canada had a question do you a link on the halfdry suit you are wearing I can’t seem to find it any where please help
I haven't seen you in a Tuilik before. How do you like it compared to a drysuit?
Well if you wear it with a drysuit underneath in this climate it’s incredibly heavy and hot and if you wear it without a dry suit it’s still leaking and you get cold and wet after a while and you’re screwed during a wet exit. Also there’s no Tuilik manufactured that has a spray skirt attachment that I would trust in rough water. It does keep your head kind of dry while you’re rolling though so that’s something I guess.
Such a beatiful boat... any chance to get at some point à modern keyhole to ease entry/exit for us westerners ?
Probably not. Other people might do that but I've decided not to go outside of what was done historically on these kayaks, because I would have no idea where to stop! For example: if I'm going to extend the cockpit, why not move it a little farther back to help with the weathercocking and make it a bit faster, but then if I'm doing that, why not move the entire volume of the kayak further back and make it paddle better overall. But then, why not make it an inch deeper and make it a MUCH better paddling kayak and a lot more comfortable. But then, why not just cut off the pointy ends which have NO function, and then it's lighter, paddles even better, and fits in your garage better.... Now having said all that, I'm really proud of what I was able to do on this latest upgrade staying within historic parameters. The increase in comfort is massive. For keyhole boats check out my modern designs!
@@capefalconkayak I think you’d know what to do Brian. You’d build an F1, which from all accounts I have heard, is an excellent kayak
@@geebee3d any design trajectory that I would explore beyond the historic parameters of these kayaks would just lead me straight back to one of my modern designs.
I mean I guess I could design a symmetrical deck low-volume kayak that would paddle a little better and roll a little better than a traditional greenlands Kayak, but if I’m gonna do design work the first thing I’m gonna do is cut off the pointy ends. They’re useless.
So at that point what you’re left with is a low-volume 13 foot kayak with blunt ends, it doesn’t paddle nearly as well as either of my modern designs and maybe rolls a little bit better.
I’m not sure there’s a market for that sort of thing….
@@capefalconkayak A very clear and reasonnable answer Brian ! :-) I guess I like a bit of pointyness... but indeed looking for "modern" confort while keeping a "traditional" look (for the hull) is not fully logical on my end. The F1 seems a very nice boat from the handling caracteristics.
He's good...
What tuilik are you wearing Brian? (or anyone if you recognize the make). Do you have a pfd under? thanks.
I have a reed and a brooks. The Brooks is warmer and more buoyant but it’s so heavy that I don’t think I could do any serious paddling in it. I like the reed but I wish it had more room in the arms.
I seem to be able to sink anything, maybe you have that unsinkable kayak lol.
And everything only in socks - great 😉
Your jeans are still dry at the end!
