  • To really get started with fine woodworking, I decided to build myself a small tea cabinet out of walnut. The goal of this project was to really focus on the joinery which consists of hand-cut through dovetails & half-blind dovetails and bridal joints. I made sure to put a lot of focus and care into the joinery because on a piece this small any imperfections will stand out.

    I actually like the thru dovetails more than the half blinds. Well done

    Very nice build! If you like tea, may I suggest trying, from Davids tea, the Buddha Blend.

    Nice work on the cabinet Morgan. I have used the Tried & True varnish oil before and I didn't care for the feel of the finish. I am tactile I suppose but I think something that you enjoy touching will be appreciated more. I watched your application carefully and I think I did it the same way but perhaps you have further steps you use? Again, nice job and an enjoyable video.

      If you're going for a nice feeling finish then I'd recommend the original oil which has bees wax. It's a little softer and I use it on tool handles and most of my projects because it feels pretty good.
      The varnish oil is definitely harder and feels more like a polyurethane finish but adds a good amount of protection. Now I only really use the varnish oil on table tops or heavy use areas. I'll also sometimes use it on drawer sides because it makes them slide a little better.
      Hope that helps!

    Very impressive! How often do you sharpen your hand planes? Keep these great videos coming! 👍👍

    • @morganhurst_redridge
      @morganhurst_redridge  Рік тому +1

      Not as often as I should, mostly when I'm using my planes if I notice the blade is getting dull I'll sharpen it. Sometimes I can go a month of light use other times I'm sharpening multiple times a day!

    Great work and thanks for this valuable input! May I ask you how you have attached the shelfs / dividers to the case? Are they glued to the sides or sit they just in the grooves without glue? I am currently planing a similar project and I am not sure because of the grain direction of the dividers. Or should I just glue the parts of the frame into the groove that have the same grain direction? So the beginning and the ends? I hope you understand what I mean…😅

    • @morganhurst_redridge
      @morganhurst_redridge  Рік тому

      I think I get what your saying!
      For the shelves on this case, I glued them in place because the grain runs from right to left which means the expansion and contraction will happen in the same direction as the walls of the case. If your shelf pieces have the grain running front to back (which you should avoid) then you can't glue them or it could cause the case walls to crack. When you're thinking about grain direction and expansion/contraction think of a circle, if the direction of the grain flows in a circle then your good to glue the pieces together.

    • @benjaminpietzner2071
      @benjaminpietzner2071 Рік тому

      @@morganhurst_redridge but the runners and the sides of the case do not run into the same direction or do I oversee something? The grain of the sides run from bottom to top and the grain from the runners from back to front.

    • @morganhurst_redridge
      @morganhurst_redridge  Рік тому

      Sorry yes, I'll be honest I forgot I used those open frames! Now I remember how it works, those dividers are in a stopped dado so they can't come out the front and the back panel locks them in place. I put a dab of glue right in the middle of the dado to eliminate any potential play. This lets the side panels expand and contract without affecting the fit of the dividers.

    I thought I was the only one who kept the plastic trays my Veritas bench chisels came in! I’m gonna make a proper tool cabinet after I make my split top Roubo. Any advice on how I should film/make the video of the Roubo? Did you get PM-V11 too?

    • @morganhurst_redridge
      @morganhurst_redridge  2 роки тому

      I'm just waiting till I have the whole PMV-11 set, just missing the 1" and 3/16" , then I'm going to make a nice tray or leather pouch!
      For your video, the best way I've found to record is to show what you would want to see. For example, I really like when other woodworkers show close-up shots of the joinery or working with their hands, so I try to focus on those angles when I'm recording my video. Mainly just have fun with it, and try not to force yourself to record every little detail.

      Your dovetails do look good from the videos I have seen. You must feel good about them compared to what you were when you started out.
      Cut dovetails every day and within a year you will have amazing skills. They do not have to be projects just scraps of wood. When I started out all I did was cutting and planing wood by hand.

      Yeah, there's a reason I put so much money into it! A good table saw is just about the most important machine in the shop.
