When I travel to Europe, I plan on staying a month in a single interesting city. I rent an apartment for the month. It usually costs less than staying a week in a hotel and the apartment comes with a kitchen, saving significantly on food. Then, I can relax and tour the city at my leisure.
Nice tip
Internet browser keep track of keywords like "Cheap tickets to Rome" so before you type in the keyword into your internet browser, make sure you're searching in private mode.
Plane tickets are inflated because they know you're in the market of purchasing tickets.
Cheapest airplane ticket can only be found two ways:
1. Book 1 month ahead.
2. Browse in private mode (google for the tutorial.)
Jeff, you're not only inspiring but also adorable.
When I travel, I typically have at least two kids with me. The week before we go, I buy snack foods in bulk and let the girls create their own "snack bags" for each day of the week that we will be at our destination. I've found that this cuts down our costs significantly because we're not stopping on the way for snacks - or hitting the extremely overpriced snack machines. I also found that this eliminates a great deal of frustration because I'm not constantly dealing with "I'm hungry."
Frugal means --> economical in use or expenditure; prudently saving or sparing; not wasteful. Thanks for watching the video.
😃👍
Yes, not only have I used airbnb in Turkey and the United States, but I am a host here in California. Great easy to use site and they are quick to help with any concerns.
The latest in sleeping cheap is to look into airbnb.com People offer spare bedrooms, sleeping porches or whatever some at very reasonable prices. They are located all over the world. A few folks provide a continental breakfast or let you use their kitchen to cook your own grub. Hosts are also a wealth of information regarding the area you are visiting.
i love how you talk!
Once you have your destination planned - start subscribing to that city's Groupon emails to possibly save on food, shows or activities at that location.
something my mom said is that if you can find a flight with a layover in your destination, then you can pack lightly and only take carry-on's, and sometimes, it costs remarkably less than normal.
My next trip to Seattle, WA, I'm renting a newer accommodation choice called airB&B. I'll stay in a couples condo/apartment for $100 per night. This way, I have a full kitchen, a separate bedroom, living room, wireless and flat screen TV along with an outdoor balcony with a nice view of the Space Needle! They are appearing in most cities & making if affordable with all the amenities. Great idea!
When my wife & I are flying to Punta Cana, DR, we make it a point not to over pack and take only 1 checked on bag for both of us. We got a rolling duffle bag that is not oversized and it is perfect - if you don't overpack
That's a great idea. It's hard to not want to explore and experience everything when you travel to a new place, but often slowing down and really experiencing a new place makes it more memorable.
I have been planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta, MX in May/June 2013 since November 2012. I have been using a combination of airline miles and cash. So far, I have saved over $1500 for two flights to my destination and I am using hotel deals to save hundreds on our stay. I've learned that planning and research goes a long way when travelling frugal.
I love a good stay-cation…
Learned from traveling not to get souvenirs on her than postcards
Couch surfing is a great way to save when traveling. Also, house swapping. There are websites to set up both of these frugal vacation options!
You can also go to the local outside markets if they have them for something to eat or drink.Sometimes cheaper than the local eating places.
We stay in condos, so we have a full kichen to cook. So I always take coupons for foods & items we possible would buy. Always want to save a buck. Also turn in points for gift cards for resturants in area of travels. And don't forget gas cards. We also usepoints for Airlines travel & the AARP car rental dicount.
Limit meals you have to buy, by packing some kind of packaged breakfast bars or something like that. This will cut a meal, or you can cut out 2 meals by eating early like 3pm and eating your main meal then.
I use casinos to travel on the cheap. If you are a players club ard holder for a large casino network like Casesars for instance, you can frequently get inexpensive or free rooms anywhere there is a casino. My husband and I will frequently get rooms in Atlantic City in the summer and spend the day at Wildwood, play slots for a while and also get a free buffet along with the free room.We just pay room taxes! No too bad.
I enjoy getting the most out of life. I look for discounts for everything. I use multiple c harge cards to get the most form every rewards system.
Off the top of my head--choose a hotel that's not on the strip, stay off the slots, and try Yardsalequeen's advice about signing up for Groupon e-mails. Or if you're really adventurous, checkout hostels or couchsurfing.
One good way to travel Cross Country would be to hitch a ride with a Truck Driver... Many drivers are "Cross Country Drivers" and do drive to many interesting places such as San Francisco, New York, Nevada, and many other places... Just stop at Truck Stop and just ask kindly if you can get a ride... Tell them that you want to travel on the cheap and that as a thank you, you can treat them to lunch... It's cheaper than a plane ticket...
One of my trips is to ask for refrigerator and frig in my hotel.Or look for one that has one. got to local grocery and get groceries. It allows me to have luxiours dinner out. Also the housekeepers are happy to give you extra shampo and soap every day.
Hey Larry Gannon - Not to worry - we're hoping to do a whole episode on cheap places to stay when you're traveling later this year - Stay Tuned! Don't be too hard on hostels, either, since they're no longer just for young people and they're much more comfortable than you probably think. As for Paris, try the Hotel Henri IV, per one of my Miser Advisers, and remember that with metro within 500m of most hotels in Paris, ANYWHERE is centrally located! - J.Y.
Hey just found this recommended by AARP! Good job Mr Jeff!
Thanks for the tip, have you used the service before?
Thanks Nathaniel Wiggins. You're obviously a very intelligent man with extraordinarily good judgement when it comes to thrift-craft.
If you have lots of time and flexibility, some commercial shipping vessels have cabins for travelers. Accomodations are not luxurious but neither is the price steep.
Instead of paying high entrance fees to a lot of museums, galleries, etc., we pick a few that we are really interested in and forget the rest. When you see a lot of places in a short time, the memories tend to become a blur anyway. Focus on what you really want to see.
my tip is sign up for free food , etc by signing up on the places you go to anyway by signing up on there sites and they will sent free coupons on meals treats etc to you in your email for your birthday .
Always check to see if there are any cooking schools at your destination. We found one in Paris and had one of the best meals of our lives for about the same cost as a fast-food restaurant.
I liked the wine box bladder idea for a travel pillow.I am going to try this.
I just did this. I was traveling monday to dc by way of saltlake with over weight flight. You can't be too anxious. Bottom line i got on delta a 4 star hilton near the airport, $36 in food coupons and $400 voucher for future travel. Now that is a winner. Oh i forgot free transportion back and forth from the hotel to airport. I could have done it again because the flights were backed up still because of snow storm. ANother tip try near by cities Sanfranciso is cheaper than oaland baltimore thandc
WE LOVE VISITING LAS VEGAS... WE HAVE CHILDREN THERE, GRANDCHILDREN, AND THE MGM GRAND ALL IN ONE STOP ... VEGAS OUR KINDA TOWN !!!
I took a round trip from Detroit to LA for $99!! It was on New Year's Day
I am all about saving. Everything from free shipping, coupons etc. Thanks for all the information.
No kids in the Yeager household but I should do this for myself. Sounds like a tasty idea!
I've always said to travel like a local. Great idea!
Thats a really grand idea useing those as pillows
I pack food in my carry on so im not tempted to buy at those expensive food hubs in the airport! And i always bring an empty reusable water bottle to fill up, as well as in the hotel i let the ice melt because it will be filtered from those big ice machines.
Found you by accident or devine intervention but I am glad I did. Wow you have some very good ideas.
Not to worry, Ricky Brunette. This episode was intended to be mostly about international travel, but we have other travel episodes planned as well as some automotive tip episodes I think you'll appreciate. Stay tuned, and Stay Cheap!
Thats outstanding Patricia, Thanks for the great tip!
Kathy, you are a true tacano.
We have an episode all on gas savings coming soon. Keep watching!
Purchase a used bicycle at a thrift store or Goodwill and use it instead f renting. When finished sell it cheap to recoup some of the cost or pawn it or donate it to Goodwill or charity for tax deduction.
Flight tip: send clothes/other items ahead of time to hotel to avoid high baggage fee's.
Try your hardest to only pack carry on save $20 on a checked bag fee. Hold out for the 12 hour window on flights. Take all your samples that you get through the year so you don't have to buy travel size items or empty 3 oz items. Key chains make great souvenirs. Retail me not dot com is great for savings and coupon codes when buying greyhound, southwest, united ect Advanced seating or family savings are great for bus trips.
Thought that your tips were great, but didn't see any tips for those of us that travel by car!
When taking a cruise, maximize the cheap factor by avoiding booze and excursions, which is where cruiselines make their highest profits. When you're on a boat, even the sober people are stumbling around, so do you really need that bucket of Buds?
So cute !
You must be joking about the wine box pillow. I love the idea of this show but I didn't really hear anything new. I'll keep watching and see...
Thanks Jeff. I'll check it out. u r the best
Avoid all tourist areas, eat where the locals eat ... I always do this as when I went to Vegas I spent 5 bucks on a large meal x 4 people including drinks..
Nice tip
Hey Jeff.
I am going to Vegas in July. How can I do it cheaply. I am driving ad going alone
What a great job you have! Keep up the good work!
love the show!!!

meet travelers be friends rob them runnnnnn
Your bike helmet is too far back on your head. FYI. (for safety).
Pack the Airportarmchair.com The rest is easy!!!
You should do a video on how much cheaper life could be if AARP hadn't help get Obama care passed so that they could get the billions in medical coding work from the government
holzee2020 Kickbacks should be so illegal that they are not worth taking a chance on. Thank you for sharing, knowledge is the first step, at least I know despise the fact they took a bribe at the expense of our elderly.
Jeff Yeager vs mr krabs who is more cheap?
that's a tough question lop
Jeff Yeager Jeff Yeager of The the cheap life... Off season??? ... Yes, the off season is a great time to travel. However, I read that you can get benefits of BOTH worlds if you travel on the SHOULDER SEASON...This is just a little before the idiots aka tourists arrive, or just a little bit after the idiots have left..
uhhh what does frugal mean
lol!
One tip for vacationing: Go slower than you normally would.
I want to go to Paris, Where's a cheap place to stay? Don't say Hostel. - I'm too old
Really? You should hear me sing. No, then again, you shouldn't.
