Try sprouting lentils. Just put about a 1/4 cup in a mason jar, cover with water, drain after one day and rinse, then rinse and drain daily for 2 or 3 more days and you'll have a nutritional powerhouse of extremely cheap food. Also good for emergency prepping - no heat or energy needed to prepare!

Another favourite cheap ingredient is cabbage. I only buy it when it's on sale (I can sometimes find it for $0.30 per pound if I buy in bulk). I'm lucky - I have a dad who makes the best sour kraut and he makes quite a quantity at a time. He is always willing to pick up a few cabbage for me too.
Cabbage chopped can be sauteed and add cumin and/or mexican seasoning. I use this for burritos or as a side to a mexican type dish. Sometimes I sautee it with an apple cider reduction - mmmmmm so fragrant and delish.
Cabbage also makes good soup. Then there is always cole slaw. Cabbage is also very high in Vitamin C. It lasts a looooong time as long as stored in a cool, dry place. My dad told me stories from the old country of his family using cabbage that was still in the field in December/January. The outer leaves would be black, but they just peeled those away and - low and behold - perfectly good cabbage.

Dr. Mercola (he's a medical doctor) on his web site recommends eating a fermented food like sauerkraut daily in order to keep the bacteria in the gut at a healthy level. I'm glad to know your father made his own. To me being a Cheapskates means avoiding today what will cost you money tomorrow, so I believe in doing all I can to stay healthy.

Yams are also higher in potassium than bananas! Try baking them and put a little butter on them....YUM!

Jeff! Eggs are actually completely fine to consume multiple of, every day. The myth that they are bad for you was dispelled years ago :P

I'm trying to get my dear hubby to eat more oatmeal. I bought 5 lb of large cut oatmeal at our local store. It was just under 5 bucks. I haven't price shopped at all the bulk stores - but I may be able to find it cheaper still. Regardless, I cook one cup of this in the AM (using 2 cups of water and 1/2 cup of milk) and a little cinnamon (sometimes I add black cardomon seeds too). I sometimes add chia seeds, sometimes hemp seeds. I cook it on medium for just over 10 minutes. If I make plain oatmeal - I sometimes add just a little chopped walnuts. If I feel like sweetening it up - I add my favourite sweetener - Maple Syrup - the real stuff MMmmmmm.
This 5 lb bag of large flake oats last many weeks longer than a big box of Kellogs cereal and is cheaper than even a small box of Kellogs cereal. It has less sugar, is super healthy and very tasty.

My cheapest favorite food is home grown fresh from the garden. Now teaching my grandchildren how to grow their own square foot garden plot. Also recycling old bottles for a vertitacle garden. We have been living by your mantra of 'how can i repurpose that. Started a wormery with them too, so all our food scraps (what little there is) and things like egg shells, shredded cardboard boxes go into the he compost.T hey are happily planning out their crops and even wanting to try new things. Keep up the good work and keep smiling.

By the way my best food for under £1.00 is bacon pieces (off cuts) at local super market 0.79p. I made 6 meals out of it and fed 12 people in total. Not bad with the edition of some vegetables and bread lol had to have a bacon sandwich. Keep bringing us such wonderful information so we can spread the word and teach others to live the cheap life.

If anyone lives near a "Sprouts Farmer's Market", they have really good produce prices (not so much on the other fluff in the store). They have weekly flyers, and on Wednesdays they honor the prices of previous and next week's flyers together. I was skeptical at first, but found them to be at least half of my regular grocery store. Plus, you don't have to buy an 8 pound bag of something like at a Costco.

rather than buying bean shoots for stir frys i bought a bag of mung beans and put 1tbsp in a juice carton with slits inthe top. fill with water every day then drain out of the slits and keep somewhere warm, after 4 days it doesn't rattle any more and you have a full box of shoots ready to eat. Love the shows.x

I've been living away from my parents for good for about a year and a half now and have really looked into how to eat on the cheap now that I'm paying for my own food. Oats, potatoes, sweet potatoes, frozen foods (frozen salmon, berries, etc), brussel sprouts, apples, canned tuna and salmon, pork, and bulk grains such as quinoa. Not only is cooking for yourself rather than eating out cheaper, but you will likely stay healthier this way. And remember to buy in bulk, shop at costco or similar stores.

Another use for banana peels... rub inside of peel on poison oak, mosquito bites, or itchy rashes until surface of peel becomes shiny. Allow treated skin to dry thoroughly before covering with clothing. Provides four to six hours relief. Costs pennies!
