- In this video from KPCB’s recent CEO Workshop, KPCB General Partner Beth Seidenberg chats with Laszlo Bock, SVP of People Operations at Google and author of “Work Rules!: Insights from Inside Google That Will Transform How You Live and Lead.” Bock shares his Google-bred wisdom on how to interview and hire new recruits as well as how to retain top talent through nurturing a distinctive culture.
1. Dont manage ppl the way you hated to be managed.
2. Concentrate practice. Focus one small skill.
3. How HR has changed.
4. Compensation explaination. Previous pay.
Great talk.
Glad, I listened to some good practices.
My note:
We learn best from deliberate, concentrated practice.
We learn best when we focus on the smallest possible things; when we do deliberate practice around one small skill that is a constituent component of a much longer thing.
Thanks, Gil. I copy pasted your note for myself, lol
"Google Works" is a great book. Thanks Laszlo
totally!
I *love* Google's philosophy on compensation. Love Love Love.

Gentle man @ outside but wicked inside.
That was great!
This guy is sooo articulate
Notes for myself:
No hiring manager decision because making decision in 10 sec
Structured interviews
Founders a bit of special category
Power away from manager
Capability judgement though peer group
Deliberate practice because it gives immediate feedback
Keeping culture intact
Free food
Small signals you give out matter tremendously
Don't hire HR until you are 100+ people
Talent does not follow normal distribution
Pay your talent multiple of average

I wanted to disagree at first! I'm ADHD... so I don't focus on one thing. I have - and do - focus on a group of ideas & projects at once, have hundreds of tabs up, and change my mind a million times. However, my core intention has remained... I love to learn, I love to do community service, and I love to do what I want, on my own time. My motivations and drive are geared around that creed. #Self-Taught #Googler #SiliconValleyRaised 😘 #LoveJonezin
I second your thoughts!
