    Great tips. Always need to remind myself the difference between mixing and mastering.

      Definitely I recently finished streaky's mastering course while I am still mixing my latest track and was getting confused with the mixing levels thinking I was mastering yer easily done .

    I think it's a massive gamble mastering on the same speakers you've mixed on

      Yeah should definitely use as many mediums for listening to music as possible ie phone computer speakers studio monitors car speakers etc

    Honestly, the loudness frustrates me so often. When i feel like i have good mix it is always too quit. Then i try to make is harder when mastering, but then i mess up all the dynamics.

      @hakkis1524 Рік тому +1

      Try to focus on mid-range and cut off some low end (like below 40hz), that will give you some kind of ”loudness” in the end. Ofcourse it all depends on a song itself.

    • @vigilantestylez
      @vigilantestylez Рік тому +2

      I think the best thing to do is to make only as loud as you can without ruining the mix. So in my opinion is it plenty loud when the meter is just barely touching 0db on the peak meter. There is no reason to crush anything.

      Make your single tracks louder, route it to groups, work with comps only if you must, put a little bit of clipper on the groups

    This is so true. I’m so frustrated because every so-called mastering engineer always gives me back my songs way too loud and almost distorted. Another issue is way too much compression.

  • @TheLordPanic

    Thanks for the advice! Needed to hear that. When mastering I try to make it sound loud I think there is a huge competition there. Step 2 was for me defo!

    too tempting when mixing to go to the master bus and start doing some 'quick' mastering - to pump it and get some gain/glue lol ... but then, yeah, thats getting into breaking number 2 hah. Thanks, Streaky

    • @Zenvo-uu9tm
      @Zenvo-uu9tm 3 роки тому +4

      Processing masterbus during mixdown is part of the mixing itself. More like mixbus processing
      There's nothing wrong with doing it as long as the track stays tonaly balanced and dynamic enough for the mastering stage

    People that send me stems usually have them all over the place in volume and horrible blended EQ so I am kinda forced to Mix and Master. Your last bit of advice is the most helpful to me. Thank you my friend.

    Yes, don't worry about loudness. Just make song sound good to yourself what you prefer and that's it. Loudness war is over. If you master -2dB truepeak with -14LUFS, everything is good. There you can add some more compression for CD mastering and bang, you're at 0.1dB peak and -12dB RMS.

    • @fattmusiek5452
      @fattmusiek5452 2 роки тому

      @saundi-hemmo can u elaborate a little on getting that -2dB truepeak?
      Also would you submit the -14 lufs, -2dB to Spotify, for example?
      U mentioned additional compression, can you talk a little about how you approach that compression?
      Thanks!!

    • @SaundiHemmo
      @SaundiHemmo 2 роки тому

      @@fattmusiek5452 just get some good modern compressor plugin and use 2 good modern limiter plugins after that so each of them do a bit and there you are

    I have a question, I always go for optimization of audio with -2 to -1db true pecks and DR 12 to 9 and I hear that sound is pleasant on big and smaller and cheaper sound systems. Am I doing right ? Do I hear right ? I adopted this from global ISO standard for TV and Streaming

    A mixing mind set isn’t completely a bad thing. Inevitably our goal as mixing and mastering engineers is to solidify the imaging of each instrument in the 3-D sound field. Ensuring that every mastering decision solidifies the imaging of the original placement of each sound is paramount.
    This is why being a mastering engineer who isn’t trained traditionally in mixing, Is actually at a massive disadvantage.
    Unless you understand the fundamental principles of placing sounds in the 3-D sound field, then you really will struggle with mastering.
    Although I agree the mastering mindset is different, it is fundamentally based on solidifying the mixing mind set.

    When I’m master track I compress with SSL 1-2 dB, API 2500 1-2 dB, then limiter. About gain, compression. Not EQ, eq on mixing stage.

    As shown on 0:27-0:32 that’s true mastering engineer has to listen to the whole entire song 🎵 from beginning to end as what robert McClellan would say start to finish.

    Is mastering really required ?

    • @fattmusiek5452

      Probably not in all cases- i wonder this more and more, going for my premaster, knowing it’s heading to LANDR, and I find myself bringing that back in and bringing it way down.
      I generally mix drums too loud also. I know people who somehow how mad plays on spotify (100,000, to me is huge- unattainable even-) who just uses Garageband. I doubt the kid knows jack about mastering

      He's taking about EQ. In my own experience if I have to EQ more than 2-3dB I probably did a s#!t mix 😅
      Use an LUFS meter to determine the finished level.

    I disagree about point 2. Mixing isn't about tracks individually, but to bring everything in context to each other... The better you take care of these interactions, the less things you have to "fix" in the mastering stage.

    Most people want their music so loud that it destroys the audio. Even after explaining this it doesn't matter, they still want it that way so that's what they'll get.
