The small shields that go onto the pauldrons are called rondels, they are designed to protect the weak spot of the armor by the armpit. These were used mainly during jousting to provide more protection however they weren't limited only to that game. Period wise it was more costly to use such and thus a design of the armor to make the pauldron extend further over the chest to make up for weak spot in the armor.
There's a lot of inspiration to draw on from historical sources when you're converting, it's little details like this that really add character to your work.
Well rondels are specifically circular, and can go on really any part of the armor. These are tilt shields, also called an ecranche, which is specifically in a more angular & shield-like shape. I'm just being nitpicky, I know
For when (if ever) you get tired of the Mark III parts, you can get amazing alternative pauldrons, bodies and legs from the Sternguard, Vanguard and Blood Angels Assault Marine boxes (just remove the blood tears).

I will bet you can grab martyr bits from the AoS Zombie sprue. There's a banner cross bar that has great hands that I plan on using as relics on my chaplain.
Just discovered your channel recently and thanks to this video I now know what I truly enjoy in the hobby (conversions) I love the painting side but for me there has always been a little voice in my head saying "that's not Salamanders enough" etc. I guess looking at the amazing art work people have done past and present, reading a few books and discovering talented hobbyists does that too the imagination. For Vulkan!
Conversions are incredible fun, they give you a whole new dimension to work with when you're making miniatures. You can do a lot with painting but you can always do more with conversions!
Funny you mentioned Bretonnians. I actually have a sealed Bretonnian Knights of the Realm box sitting next to me right now. I'll open it up one of these days.
hey Pete! if u want a good conversion Challange i suggest converting Birdmen of Catrazza from Pteraxii Sterylizors/Skystalkers and Free Guild pieces. for some impressive outriders/pistoliers
I know I'm late for the normal interactions for this video, but I think I just came up with a way to make stormcasts to look more.... marinesy. You just have to replace the stormcast shins with marine ones. Aside from artificer armors, most PA marks have big, bulky shins lower legs.
Thanks to this video, I have new ideas to bling my Templars... and coffee up my nose. I ought to know better than to drink coffee while watching your content. :D
Can you do a paint tutorial for Black Templars based on how you painted them in this video. They look a lot different from your prior videos, almost airbrushed. It looks really good.
The easiest way to do the transformation is several simple steps. First, find the Sargeant or chaplain of the battle brother to open the SM's room locker and to keep him busy. Second steal his blanket or chapter issued teddy bear. Third, find his vox music caster and glue it to the religious channels. Then tell the SM his room was raided by either A a codex compliant chapter you dislike, or by tzeentch. As he gets mad tell him the chapter got a fund together to pay for his camo paint in all black for a teddy bear night rescue raid. Voila rinse and repeat til you have Templars. Warning, repeated stealing of chapter approved teddy bears will lead to a formation of Angry Marines... no one wants an infestation of Angry Marines. This method is approved by Rogal Dornan for use on anyone up to Chapter Master level.
I've tried it with the "ETB", which are too soft and too brittle at the same time. at several points parts simply chipped off. the gray stuff is better to process

Cool Conversion. But it just looks like a Truescale 30k Black Templar. Especially with those legs! But hey, I got 10 of those stormcast dudes from the soulwars set that no one wants to buy and I got a bucket full of Bretonian heads so guess I'm making some conversion!
That's kind of what I was going for though. I feel that Primaris on their own are too "clean" for for the Black Templar aesthetic. Mixing in those "older" kits gives us something that stands out from their Imperial Fist progenitors.
I too hat sigmarite Legs. But simply cutting them at the knee and adding Primaris Legs is an easy and expensive solution! (Just like GW likes it) I also think the Sigmarboibody works better for DAngels, since it's a Robe and Templars wear them Tabards
Nice video, i like the idea of building something new out of little bits. Could you make a video about converting astra militarum into death korps of krieg by skulpting gasmasks and steel helmets?
I really love the idea though these concrete legs seem a bit effeminate on a model with such broad shoulders and he looks comically obscene due to that (nothing wrong with effeminate legs IRL though). But the idea is really fun and i would probably just use some less dynamic legs for my own take on this conversion.
Just search for 1.5mm x 1mm chain and that should bring up a few items. Also check out green stuff world, they have a few chains available in various sizes.

Paint them black? Genious!
Would they look good if I made them melee style marines. Chainswords, powerblades, etc. I'm afraid the chest area won't match.
In fact BT crusader chains should be attached to a gauntlet with a pin, that is done locked onto the forearm with said pin.
