I thought the same exact thing but I have seen multiple channels get very negative towards people providing (constructive) criticism and go as far as to turn off comments and do what they were going to do anyway. Oh well, live and learn.
sometimes it is just difficult to separate the constructive criticism from "troll" criticism. Reading a comment calling you an idiot and kind of insulting you makes you kind of numb to all criticism. I don't know if this is Jake's experience just giving some perspective
Just a heads up! U might already know this but I'll throw this out there! If you would of crossed your trailer chains, the chains would of caught your trailer hitch before hitting the ground! If your chains aren't long enough then lengthen them!!! It will save you from disaster! Imagine if your receiver broke at a higher speed let's say on the interstate!? In fact here in Pa, you can get a fine if chains are not crossed! Just a little heads up! Love the vids!
Paul What part of south central pa are you in? Im down in York County. Same goes here for Jake, Ive got nearly every piece of Fab equipment/ Vehicle Repair Equipment at my disposal.
Jake, it looks like your spring shackles in the rear of the jeep are bottomed out on the frame and not hitting the bump stops. Not allowing the spring to flex out flat. Get Izzy to bounce up and down on the back and see if the spring is hitting the frame. If that’s the case longer shackles are needed. U need longer rear shackles ASAP. More broken parts are on the horizon especially with the added tongue weight of the trailer.
Door Handle -- Take that one screw out and look behind. You will see two metal rods that connect the door latch + door lock. There are small plastic clips that break, which might be found at autozone? but on amazon for sure. Temp fix = Use the plastic clip from the lock to replace the broken clip and fix the door latch. been there done that.
I kinda seen that setup not working for long because of it changing where the weight distribution would be. I believe if you adjust the trailer to be longer instead of the hitch being longer it'll work out much better. these are the thing that create the memories though! if you didn't break it then you wouldn't have a story to tell later.
And the receiver is the thing that the ball hitch slides into. You broke the ball hitch or in your case "pintle hitch.. Not the receiver. I saw that coming also. I build trailers for a living. I didn't say anything because my comments go un-noticed most of the time anyhow. Glad you kept the old hitch with you.
It's because it induces a bending moment. If he put some riggers that mount to the bottom of the bumper it would triangulate it and work. Extending the trailer might make it handle weird.
Yeah, I was thinking maybe make the trailer tongue longer...but then I thought perhaps four wheeling a short tongue is prefered. I don't know, trial and error is required sometimes.
I agree.. make it solid, be heavy but it won't bend as easy as that open box. When you can extend the trailer tongue, reinforce it by making triangles. Link it back to the frame. [__]►--○|[__]_)
Just move the spare and the trasharoo to the trailer. You already have a spare mount on top of the trailer. If you loose the original lunette(correct name for the hitch ring) then you will loose the pivot ability of that setup unless you go to a hitch made specifically for off-roading.
Hey Jake, Expedition Overland fixed this problem by splitting their swing out in half in the middle. They are able to open the swing out with their trailer on the hitch because the 2 swing outs are half as wide. Also that windshield is going to get you pulled over eventually.
Still worries me that the propane tank is right in line of flying rocks from the right rear tire. Hope that’s not another situation down the road. Also, the hitch extension might have been ok if it hadn’t been a hollow tube. Be safe y’all!
It's definitely a good idea to cross your chains from your trailer to your truck. Left chain to right hook, right chain to left hook. It will helps center the trailer and keep it from jerking left and right in the event that it comes loose. In some states this is required by law.
Looking at it again, your chains are very close to each other on your trailer, so it shouldn't make much difference, but it's probably still a good idea.
Hey Jake and Izzy! if you are going to use an extended hitch, go with solid steel, not tubing, and do not attach to the shackles, attach to the tabs right next to the receiver cross the chains !
Honesty I saw that coming. Well made and all that but that's a lot less weight onto the frame and more onto the receiver. More than likely jackknifed a bit and put too much stress on the long hitch.
looks like the problem was running the safety chains to the d rings on the bumper. their too far out, when you were backing up one of them pulled tight putting stress on the hitch most likely the noise you heard.
2:41 look into that, Wednesday I bought a truck, Thursday I drove it home. Spokane to Portland it showed me 17mpg, I purchased a 2400# unladen flatbed trailer in Portland and headed south, 18mpg until I got to the hills, clearly trailers should improve your fuel economy. Perhaps your Flux capacitor is defunct?
Seen that breaking, put a lot of stress on the receiver, the tongue should have been lengthened instead...If you Can Jake, get to a welder/fabricator and reengineer that tongue making it longer (extend-able).... Duh, just watched to rest of video... Nevermind.. you got it handled.... open mouth, insert foot LOL
Like the cracked windshield . My wife keeps on getting at me to change mine on my LJ and i told her that most jeeps if you are using them to enjoy the outdoors you will have a cracked windshield.
Hate to hop on the "told you so" crowd but I was just talking to a friend at work about how long that "extension" would last. I bet it would have been until at least the first use of it on a downward departure angle but didn't even last that long. The physics of the stress are done for you - unhitch the trailer to open the gate. This was a shock to no one really, just happy it didn't happen at fifty five and throw that loaded trailer into traffic. Good luck with some more thought out fixes - great channel and have followed you from the start.
I can't see the trailer hitch, but if you can switch to a max coupler. Also figure a way to mount a wheel on trailer tongue. Safe travels and hurry to Texas.
Do you ever come to the East Coast or do you stay out toward the west where it's more warmer and not cold I live in Delaware 15 minutes from Philadelphia Pennsylvania about 30 minutes from Baltimore Maryland I was just wondering if we can get a meet up out on the east coast we got some pretty good parks
Damn, you told me about that at the jamboree, and I'm glad you can go back and try and fix it. I forgot to tell you though that since you're on the road, you should try geocaching it's a whole lot of fun. It was really awesome meeting you!!!
Leverage. The long extension put too much leverage on it greatly increasing the tongue weight the square tubing was under. I was gonna comment when you had it built. Now I feel like I wish I had. I saw this coming. Good thing you kept the original hitch. Hopefully the new fix will work, but I would skip it. I would keep the short hitch, and drop the trailer at camp. Keep in mind this is also adding stress to the receiver on Jade. That leverage is torquing down on Jade's receiver/bumper like a much heavier trailer. A longer hitch system will also effect your off road performance by taking away your departure angle.
Izzi, time for you to talk. I want to learn about your talent with the camera and what type of work you've done with it. ~Smile! Wait, you're always smiling. So adorable. Hi Jake and Annie. ~Smile!
So many “I knew it would break” comments. Quite frankly, you are lucky the tube broke before it twisted your hitch down. Now, if the attachment to the jeep is sturdy, and that’s not common in jeeps, you can get a thick wall reviver, or even a solid receiver, to prevent this from happening. A much better route is changing the spare tire/rear rack to allow a normal receiver and avoid the abnormal hitch setup. Good luck down the road.
Pushing the hitch so far out, it was bound to happen. Expected either the bumper mount bolts to shear from the torque or the hitch tubing itself. Guess we found the weakest link. Lot of leverage working against that setup, especially if the trailer was tongue heavy
ya i saw that one coming, when I first saw that design i knew it wasn’t going to hold up, specially for what you guys were doing. I was going to leave a comment but didn’t want to be negative. the trailer needs to be longer not the receiver
Lol I like that after Izzy arrived you post more on Facebook. It would also be cool if you made a video we're Izzy talks more about the experience on the Jeep, and where she comes from. Safe trips!
Hey I'm loving your adventure! You are living my dream! I was thinking about the trailer situation, I know you have tons of suggestions below, but I think if you split the extended length between the trailer side and the Jeep side of the hitch the stress will be spilt between the two rather than all on one side.
Sorry for your troubles Jake. I didn't realize they used such thin walled tubing to make that extension. May I suggest relocating the gear and spare from the back of Jade to the trailer?. That would allow for off road clearance and put the joint back where it needs to be. I know it means rethinking storage. But this could have been very catastrophic. You were very fortunate that this happened at the specific moment that it did.
Not surprised. The trailer isn't light as a feather, and that thing is too unstable, meaning is it too long to be like that without lateral supports. It may work out when you are pulling, because the forces go down the trailer and try to "pull apart" the base of the extension, which should hold up, but if you're reversing you're pushing the extension towards the Jeep, and at any slight angle it's easy to get some leaver action that will bend and snap the extension. Same thing could have happened with powerful wind from the side on a motorway, because the hinge would be "pushed" to the side and be under bending forces. Also, if you extend the trailer, don't make the same mistake: if possible make some side supports that go from the outmost part of the extension to the frame at an angle. Using also a not-hollow metal wound help a lot, because it will be stronger to lateral forces and even if it bends, it will do that more "evenly" and it will be more unlikely to snap.
iamjake thank you for replying! That said, I want to point out that by no means I am an expert about trailers, just pointed out logical arguments and some basic physics, so if someone that works in the industry has better advice, go for it. Also I don't want to say that that extension was bad or anything, because the guys that made it for you were really doing something just to help you and probably thought it should hold up fine, but apparently it just wasn't good enough for your application. Good luck with finding a replacement and the prosecution of the trip!
Just found your channel! Instantly subscribed! Can’t quit watching. If you ever make it to Alaska, I’d love to meet you! I am stationed in Anchorage, Alaska! To the Muns guy at the beginning: IYAAYAS!
Hey Jake, I'm sure you've got pleanty of suggestions, but if you want to make it possible for you to open your rear door, you should extend the length of your trailer hitch. This will give you the support and strength you need. Theres too much stress on the receiver And the longer you make the receiver the more stress is added to the jeep. Thanks for the videos and good luck on your journey!
Hey, looks like you guys had a great time. If you would like to gain back the mileage you lost and then some. Get yourself a box of old fashioned Moth balls and add three in jades fuel tank every fill up. Also get yourself some extra jumper cables. Purchase some light gauge welding wire. You can weld pretty with those D.C. Batterys link together.
hey jake, something's up with your audio on the camera... on my headphones sound is only going to my left ear, but on the drone shots where you had music it was fine in both ears. Maybe your microphone is broken?
It looks like his microphone is recording to one channel, you can easily fix this with some free software if it starts happening again. Jake may have unintentionally done something during editing that did that with his audio.
I saw this being installed and sort of figured it was a bad design. Lots of leverage on the Jeep and bad weight distribution. Hopefully the next mod shop will extend the trailer tongue.
If. You ever in mo hit me up for welding you use an extension but it wold have to be supported built very heavy. Better to stretch out the tong less stress on ur jeep
Oh man. I’m so pissed now. 99% sure that’s the Home Depot I work at. Seeing the outside and how close it is to lake pleasant. To bad I wasn’t working that day.
Bryant Woody - Wow, thank you that would be amazing! It definitely needs to be done. Monday we will be in the Phoenix area, would that work? What is your contact info? Thank you, Jake.
I only got about 25% of the audio. :( A lot of us saw this coming. If you want more distance between the Jeep and trailer you need to extend the trailer tongue with proper gauge square tube steel. If you come to northern NV I'd be happy to do this for you. However, you would probably be better off relocating your spare to the trailer and leaving the short tongue for an overall shorter rig. A longer trailer, although easier to back up, could give you trouble off road.
Saw that one coming. Extend the tongue on the trailer Jake. The extended hitch increased the leaverage on the receiver causing your hitch to snap. Also any plans to come up to Canada ? We've got some great trails here in Ontario. Cheers 🇨🇦🇨🇦
My suggestion buy OEM on the door latch, I bought a cheap replacement on eBay, broke within 6 months. Also, I have crack in windshield, AZ highway patrol stationed on median spotted it and pulled me over, did not cite me but probably could have inconvenienced me with a fix-it ticket. Great meet-up at the lake! (stock Geo Tracker).
The receiver is on the bumper and the hitch slides into it, you broke the bar on the hitch extension, it should be much thicker, probably solid steel with that much extension!
did anyone notice on headphones the music played out both ears and the sounds from the video (talking, wind ect) only played out one? I tried with 2 sets of headphones and both the same
That was pretty predictable. When yo extend the shaft, you increase the stress at the attachment point. Glad you were able to fix it quickly. good luck
I knew that extension was going to fail just looking at it. Was just a matter of time. Extending the trailer is a much better idea and should last a long time.
Im happy than you guys are ok, and that thing didnt brake on higth speed.im preaty sure dave will build something that will never bent or brake again! Also need to say that izzi is giving you a big help vloging now is so awesome now we can se things in a diferent angle. And moving shots while you doing other things, im happy to see you guys working as one. You guys are awesome! Oh and anni and jade as well!
I'm not going to beat a dead horse here brother, but glad you had your other receiver and made short work of swapping it back over. Luckily that happened while you were stopped and not driving on the highway or that would've been catastrophic. Glad ya'll are safe!
You should have NEVER had that receiver extension that long. 6" max. Trailer chains MUST be crossed beneath the trailer hitch. Your present trailer tongue is waaaaay too short!
Hi Jake, interesting video. But I was really worried, your title is a little wrong: I thought your receiver broke (the square hole by the bumper). That would have been a real bummer. Worse than having the tongue extension break. Like the other guys say, make the trailer tongue longer. Also, cross your chains.
Sorry your tube snapped, but saw that one coming, it was a good idea, but just wasn't taken far enough, you needed angle braces going from the tube back to each frame member creating a triangle on each side...that would take care of side to side shear forces, then either on the top or the bottom, you needed to have a truss welded to the tube to take care of vertical sheer forces. Even with lengthening the tongue of the trailer, I would still to this same thing, especially with you going off road all the time
Kinda wondered why they decided to lengthen the receiver arm instead of stretching the trailer hitch frame. That's what it's built for. Meh. Hope they do it right and lengthen the entire A frame instead of another long bar to hook the pintle on. Otherwise it'll probably break again.
And that would have effectively changed nothing. Sure the extension itself could take more abuse, but the leverage on the bumper would be the same, and now with the added weight of solid steel, rather than tube steel. The area where the hitch attaches to the bumper would be the next area to fail, then the bumper or bumper mounts would be next. The correct way to fix this is to extend the trailer tongue, and use triangulation from box corners out towards the tongue tip.
Seen that coming
Yup. Over a 100 comments saying the same thing but don't listen to us we're just subs anyway
I thought the same exact thing but I have seen multiple channels get very negative towards people providing (constructive) criticism and go as far as to turn off comments and do what they were going to do anyway. Oh well, live and learn.
Yep.
sometimes it is just difficult to separate the constructive criticism from "troll" criticism. Reading a comment calling you an idiot and kind of insulting you makes you kind of numb to all criticism. I don't know if this is Jake's experience just giving some perspective
I said the same thing

Paul Condie well that's the way your ment to do it
I work down in York. Hailing from Mechanicsburg. If Jake makes his way this far East he will have quite the following here.
U need longer rear shackles ASAP. john conte jconte yep. That was hitch management 101.
Yeah, I was thinking maybe make the trailer tongue longer...but then I thought perhaps four wheeling a short tongue is prefered. I don't know, trial and error is required sometimes.
I love the pause at the end for the true supporters to stay
A shaft that long might need to be solid, not a tube. Welcome to Arizona, enjoy your stay.
Grinder TV - Thank you for the suggestion!
Love the Channel btw, if you need anything while here in the Phx area don't hesitate to hit me up. Looking forward to watching your adventures.
I was thinking a truss to tie upwards although I'm not sure where to tie the upper anchor points
If the shaft was solid instead of hollow it never would of broke.
I agree.. make it solid, be heavy but it won't bend as easy as that open box.

Zanfindel - Thank you for the suggestions!
Love all your videos and all you guys do!! May the journey never end 😊
Jesse Tate - Thank you for the suggestion!
Am I the only who saw that coming?
Nope!!
Hey Jake and Izzy! if you are going to use an extended hitch, go with solid steel, not tubing, and do not attach to the shackles, attach to the tabs right next to the receiver cross the chains !

i told you, that chain and a turn buckle to tighten it like the super hitches use on slide in on pickups is what that extention needed.
Glad the hitch didn't break while on the highway. Hope you can get it fixed and on the road soon
I wonder how they smash in the Jeep?
That was the weak link. Easy fix, all part of the adventure. Keep up the good work. See ya soon.
Scott Slade - Yes it is - Thank you!
iamjake any thoughts on what States you might end up in next few months... I know plans can change...

Lol I like that after Izzy arrived you post more on Facebook. It would also be cool if you made a video we're Izzy talks more about the experience on the Jeep, and where she comes from. Safe trips!
I feel like he jack knifed the trailer when he was backing up causing the break at that moment.
Thanks Jake for sharing this experience. Now I'm going to buy a second hitch to keep it in the jeep. Apparently; it might be useful.
4wdxj - Thank you!
Hey I'm loving your adventure! You are living my dream! My 92 yj gets 19-20mpg, maybe because almost everything is stock? I'm not sure haha
jalend venn - ...and probably not full of gear.
Bigger tires hurt mpg alot
You shouldn't have a straight shaft. Two additional supporting bars should be added, forming a triangle. Good luck on your adventure!

hey jake, something's up with your audio on the camera... on my headphones sound is only going to my left ear, but on the drone shots where you had music it was fine in both ears. Maybe your microphone is broken?
Finn Dann - Thank you for the heads up!
Can confirm
Had to wear both earphones to watch this one
It looks like his microphone is recording to one channel, you can easily fix this with some free software if it starts happening again. Jake may have unintentionally done something during editing that did that with his audio.
Finn Dann your headphones are cutting in and out! Lol sounded fine
canonphoto no it's definitely not my headphones. I tried watching with 3 different pairs of headphones and it was the same with them all.
I saw this being installed and sort of figured it was a bad design. Lots of leverage on the Jeep and bad weight distribution. Hopefully the next mod shop will extend the trailer tongue.
What type of maps do yall use to find your camping spots? Any overlanding apps you guys specifically like?
NC Bux Outdoors - I use Earth Mate - Thank you!
If. You ever in mo hit me up for welding you use an extension but it wold have to be supported built very heavy. Better to stretch out the tong less stress on ur jeep
As mentioned before, these events are what make the great stories in the end. Good to see you have the original.
Robert Meade - Yes - glad I had it! Thank you!
Oh man. I’m so pissed now. 99% sure that’s the Home Depot I work at. Seeing the outside and how close it is to lake pleasant. To bad I wasn’t working that day.
Those interior door handles are really easy to fix. The part is about 5 bucks on amazon, takes about 20 minutes once you get one.
Trevor English - Thank you for the suggestion!
Looks like you need a windshield... I work at Safelite in Phoenix. Let me know when you are passing through and we can make it happen.
Bryant Woody - Wow, thank you that would be amazing! It definitely needs to be done. Monday we will be in the Phoenix area, would that work? What is your contact info? Thank you, Jake.
Yes it looks like Jake went ***A.W.O.L.***
***E-Beggar***
I only got about 25% of the audio. :(
A lot of us saw this coming.
Haywood Jablomi - Thank you for the suggestions!
Saw that one coming. Extend the tongue on the trailer Jake. The extended hitch increased the leaverage on the receiver causing your hitch to snap. Also any plans to come up to Canada ? We've got some great trails here in Ontario. Cheers 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Zack V - Thank you for the suggestion!
Dave Stennes - Thank you for the suggestions!
The receiver is on the bumper and the hitch slides into it, you broke the bar on the hitch extension, it should be much thicker, probably solid steel with that much extension!
You guys are great, kind of what I like to do, going to Baja anytime I can. Hopefully I will see on the road. Going to Baja. Good luck
Probably get a solid metal receiver?
The meet up was fun and I was glad to shake your hand Jake. Met many very good folks that morning.
Patrick Connors - Thank you, it was nice meeting you and everyone else - fun day!
As far as that was sticking out, expected that. Engineering 101.
Glad you got the rig figured out. looking forward to meeting you in Baja
the Traveling Together Journal - Yes, so glad it's fixed. Looking forward to meet you as well - will be a fun time!
you should look into a lock and roll hitch
North American Nomad - Thank you for the suggestion!
I'm not sure if the lock and roll would've addressed this issue, but they seem pretty solid
Epic adventure and that sucks about the extended hitch setup not working.
You should take pictures at the state lines! At the welcome sign of each state
You guys handled that well with the hitch, I would’ve made slightly more noise! Lol Have fun in AZ, & Merry Christmas!
MayburyMayhem - LOL - Thank you!
Will you make it up to Northern AZ again?
You can do the same set up again it is has to be a Solid square steel bar not hollow and you should be good to go again
Anybody else miss Verona and her laugh!
what is the colour shade on jade? thanks in advance.
Have you thought about mounting a reese hitch on the front of the vehicle with a truck tool box bolted to it for more storage?
What happened to your windshield?
Why would you trust that guy again lol after his first one already broke lolololol
did anyone notice on headphones the music played out both ears and the sounds from the video (talking, wind ect) only played out one? I tried with 2 sets of headphones and both the same
That was pretty predictable. When yo extend the shaft, you increase the stress at the attachment point. Glad you were able to fix it quickly. good luck
sifilmaker - Thank you!
Oh and anni and jade as well!
jaime velazquez - Thank you!
What year is the jeep?
I'm not going to beat a dead horse here brother, but glad you had your other receiver and made short work of swapping it back over. Luckily that happened while you were stopped and not driving on the highway or that would've been catastrophic. Glad ya'll are safe!
Riley Heisey - Thank you!
What a cool life.and yea I seen that coming too but at least you didn't toss the original one.good spirit you guys have.stay safe.
Derrick Murphy - Thank you!
You should have NEVER had that receiver extension that long. 6" max. Trailer chains MUST be crossed beneath the trailer hitch.
Your present trailer tongue is waaaaay too short!
Gord Baker - Thank you for the suggestions!
What year on your Jeep?
Keep that door handle broke, and you'll always be reminded to open doors for the young lady.
big buck - LOL - That's right! Thank you!
Even with lengthening the tongue of the trailer, I would still to this same thing, especially with you going off road all the time
Steve Lindley of Oregon - Thank you for the suggestion!
Attach paracord to the metal rod inside the door to a piece of wood. Easy door release.
what happened to the front windshield?
Overland Ethan and Hila.
Papabless
Oh my god so accurate
A perfect blend of genres
How do you guys clean Annie?
Glad you had a backup!! Any chance of moving your spare to the trailer?
That's a great idea
And now that guy is far away..now you know he is no engineer. And to trust only professional welders.
Kinda wondered why they decided to lengthen the receiver arm instead of stretching the trailer hitch frame. That's what it's built for. Meh. Hope they do it right and lengthen the entire A frame instead of another long bar to hook the pintle on. Otherwise it'll probably break again.
TheRoadfarmer - Yes, I'm going with a different setup and I'll make a video showing it! Thank you!
Noooooooo I moved from the lake pleasant are to Colorado dang it
Man if you had come to the machine shop where I work, I could’ve made that extended hitch out of solid billet steel!!
At least you had your back up!
